"Boston has an amazing set of remarkable athletes whose actions in the moment have become (sic) ionic in sports. Havlicek stole the ball. Fisk waved the ball fair. Flutie launched the Hail Mary pass. Varitek split the uprights. Today we honor one of the most brilliant moments: Bobby Orr flying through the air. Who could forget that play against St. Louis as the Bruins beat the Blues to bring a Stanley Cup to Boston?"

Menino: 'Varitek split the upright' in 'ionic' moment

Menino, dropping some knowledge on the rest of us.

Hitting a home run between the foul poles is splitting the uprights.

Bobby Orr was one hell of a pitcher

That's all well and good, but when are we going to honor Will Brussels and Lucky Bird damn it!

Only the great ones like Mike MacGuire can do it.:D

Don't forget Sammy Sooser.

Given the context of his speech...I'm willing to bet that he was referring to "splitting the uprights" in football and Vinatieri. Maybe I'm just incredibly forgetful...but I can't remember a homerun Tek hit that was an iconic Boston sports moment in itself. Vinatieri on the other hand, has quite a few iconic moments with the Pats. I'm gonna go with football on this one. :)

Re: Menino, mayor of Boston, credits Varitek with kicking SB36 game-winning FG.

Was that Rosemary or George Clooney with the hail Mary?

Classic Menino! In the same speech he was commenting on the number of Boston athletes who've become "ionic" and who can forget his famous "jumbletron" reference.
Such great memories come back when seeing Bobby Orr and the gang. The best hockey player I've ever seen.
Amazing to think how injuries forced Bobby to retire at age 28. 28!

Well, it starts with a V....

Ahh... Another great sport fan politician. I wish he would have talked about the great TD pass from Mike Maguire to Sammy Sooser (RIP Teddy).

I'll never forget the moment when Brady hit Sam Cassell in the endzone in 2001.

Truley, one of the greatest moments as a sports fan for me.

I thought he was #28 on the Baltimore Colts.......:D
