Since I was unfairly called out for being selfish in a thread I hadn't even posted in, this question begs to be asked.

Social Security - Is it selfish to want to phase out the current system and replace it with a mandatory investment into safe investments, like the S&P 500, so people can grow their own wealth and the poor can become part of the investment class. We could reduce the tax by 2/3 (over time), use the 1/3 as a true safety net for the indigent and allow everyone to earn a good retirement. Or is it selfish to take so much money from people that they don't have enough left to save and invest ?

Schools - Inner city schools cost $15K per student per year. By CA standards of 20 kids/class through 3rd grade and 32 kids/class thereafter that's $300K per class through 3rd grade and $480K thereafter. Is it selfish to say that's enough ? Or is it selfish to expect taxpayers to throw more money into the pit when the issue is whether the kids want to learn.

Roads - Depending on your state you pay about $3 of gas tax every time you put 10 gallons in your car. And look at all the cars on the road every day. Is it selfish to say I don't want to pay more or is it selfish for the people to want me to pay more when there's a sick amount of money going into the gas tax pit and, yet, our roads are still awful.

Health Care - I've said many times that I'm fine with taxes going to catastrophic things like cancer or heart attacks. Is it selfish to not want to pay for grandpa's viagra or little Joey's visit to the doctor because he has a cold ? Or is it selfish for people to expect every little thing to be paid for by taxpayers.

Abortion - Is it selfish to want us to not murder thousands of would be kids every day ? Or is it selfish or would be mothers to execute their unborn ? When I started having sex I found ads where I could get a couple hundred condoms for $5 or so. Maybe they weren't the best but they worked. Or maybe it's selfish for me to expect people to use condoms.

There's other examples but I'm tired of typing. Is my side really selfish ? Maybe you think so - but I don't.

Well at least you were only called selfish. I was called that and an *******. I don't mind though. Remember, if it weren't for us *******s, you'd all be ****ting out of your ears. :D

Now that would give new meaning to the phrase, **** for brains. :p

Actually, I asked you if you were mentally retarded, which is different than being called mentally retarded. IIRC you answered my question by saying that you weren't. :D

Yow, that was tough to watch . . . that's how I view many of the Liberals around here though, not how I view myself :)

I will admit this is rich, a guy who's used the terms 'stupid' 'liberal' 'freak' at least 347,000 times is crying because he's been called selfish.

Gee whiz, can I get an atta boy thread too? Real World totally burned me when he responded by saying 'no you're the one who's selfish!'

Not sure I get the relationship here but whatever. I actually think it's the Liberals who are selfish by demanding that people should pay for things for others.

If someone does not agree with you then you agree to disagree. It's just the way things work - or at least the way they SHOULD work.

To me the biggest difference between conservatives and liberals is just that.

Today, Conservatives are about the individual - at least I am - and the liberals are about the everyone. Liberals; despite good in intention, just force things on other people that they deem nessesary. While conservatives want limited government intervention - liberals want government to control most if not all things - at least from what I have seen and heard.

To me, freedom is the best thing in the world - freedom to post my views on this forum, freedom to go outside and smoke a million cigarettes, freedom to go to a bar (having to be 21 of course) and have a few drinks, freedom to do almost anything.
When you start forceing things on people - you start infringing on their rights and God given freedoms. Givin' there ARE things that obviously have to be forced - such as you should not murder, steal, rape, etc.
I believe that an individual has the right to choose whatever path they want to take in life - and whatever path they choose, they should be able to take. As long as you don't murder people or rape, or anything like that - it's all good.
To me, the purpose of government is not to force things on people - rather - to help people. Given - this can sometimes conflict like in the other discussion about people killing themselves.
That thread really hits home for me, for I have had a close one kill themself before. This person was mentally ill - Bi-Polar if you must know - and had attempted suicide (Which later she confessed was because she wanted attention). Doctor's tried hard to do whatever they could, but despite this, she attempted suicide again (Which, again she admitted was for attention). I was there for her, she knew that, I would talk to her if she was feeling down... but in spite of that... she just loathed life.
Now, there are two way's I could of gone about this. I could support the helping of people like this with volenteer or money, or whatever - or I could forget about her and move on. What did I do? I supported her, of course. But my personal belief is that you do not force your personal belief on me.

If someone want's to kill themself - so be it. If a loved one of mine wants to kill themself, I may love them and I personally can try to help them - but I would NEVER force that responsibilty on people.

    Now, what about abortion?
Morally, I personally disagree with it and I would never allow a child of mine to be subjected to it. "Oh but it's the mother's choice!" Wrong. It's the PARENT'S choice. If someone is raped then yes - abortion is justified. But if you are dumb enough to have sex then you are responsible enough to have a child.

    What about stem cell research?
As said in the "Who am I", I am very torn on this. While I believe it could benefit most people - there is just something morally wrong about this to me. Then again, the country HAS lost most of it's morals.

Speaking of morals, where HAVE the morals gone? The family values?
I am only 20 (On this friday :D) - but I grew up in a very strict European style family. My grandparents where immigrants from Italy on my fathers side - and my mothers parents where decended from Italian Immigrants, only a few generations back. Bering circumstance, I was forced to live with my fathers side of the family - and grew up with the whole notion that Family Comes First. GASP! Really? Does he honostly think this way?

I would die for my family - but what about extended family? What about the good - Neih - GREAT people of America such as the cops, teachers, lawyers(Most of them ZZZZING!!), Doctors, Judge's, and etc. What about the social workers, the volenteers? What about the average american working class person - who busts his ball$ at work just to get by? What about the American heros who jump into train tracks while a train is approaching to save a total stranger? WHAT ABOUT THESE GREAT PEOPLE?

I would gladly lay my life on the line to protect the freedoms that they so enjoy. I am currently in the process of becoming a police officer - because I feel that I can give back to a community that has given me so much love and time and patience - but more importantly - to protect those in need... but after everything I said - you are your own person with your own beliefs - and that is why I would NEVER make you pay for my personal morals.
