Re: What is a "Shutdown" corner ?

That lad at Oakland aint too bad, you know.

Terrific player. Defintiely one of the best in the league.

Shut down corner though? The Raiders were 31st against the run. They also gave up the 3rd most yards per pass attempt in the NFL which indicates when teams did throw against Oakland, they did so with success. Was he never thrown at because he is a true shutdown guy or was it because there was simply no need to risk throwing at the only playmaker on a weak defense.

Re: What is a "Shutdown" corner ?

I compare a shutdown corner to a QB calling his own plays--almost unheard of anymore. The reason?? Well, coaches like control, and dont like to give up the big play. Shutdown corners are almost always the most ****y guys--big risk/big reward types. With coaches going to more cover 2 and 3 zones it not only eliminates the need for one of these, it eliminates alot of the man on man skills that are continually improved upon to GET to be a shutdown corner.
Law was one in his prime, a great example of"I put him on your best reciever and take him away". Half the field is just talk. But they have gone the way of the fullback, and with them SHOULD go the big-time contracts demanded for such players....funny how the salaries havent gone away huh??

He was targeted 32 times in 14 games last year. That to me says OC's also know he's a shutdown. ;)
