After the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia immediately wound down from superpower to "great power" status. They and the other former Soviet Republics accepted that it was not possible to be military equals to the United States. We were the "lone remaining superpower."

So from about 1990-present, 21 years, we have continued in the stance that we as a nation must maintain superpower status.

Yet Russia still exists. China still exists. Japan still exists. Britain still exists. None of them maintain our level of military might.

Evidently they don't have to, whether friend or foe. Yet we do.

Some here would opine that we still must. Here's my "what if":

What if, instead of outspending the rest of the world on our military, we had simply outspent the #2 power by 25%?

In other words, still maintain the stance of "we must spend the most on our military." But do not maintain the stance that we must be leaps and bounds ahead of other nations.

Clearly, we would have to "abandon our friends" if we did this. Yet there are no British, German, or Israeli bases here, and they are still our friends.

And we would be trillions of dollars of taxpayer money richer.

I'd like to open up the floor for the hindsight conversation. I can't even say I'd be "for it," in retrospect. I think I would, but it's interesting to think about.

It might also give us food for thought going forward.

    Thoughts?

I actually agree with you 100% on this one. Strange thing is, BOTH democrat & republican congress keep voting to maintain military spending. I often wonder if it's just all about $$ and jobs. cutting spending means fewer jobs and GDP...but in this case, who gives a f***? Not me...

Besides, we can continue to spend on elite-technology weapons and defense systems while we cut back on the expensive foreign bases and super large military equipment like tanks, submarines and aircraft carriers.

We maintain our power so they won't attack us and then turn us into them.

If we were tunred into them I wouldn't be able to call Obama "Jug Ears"

If we were turned into them there would be no "liberals" they would all be killed.

My friend, there's no need to "wonder" if it's just about money and jobs because believe me, it is.

There are countless examples of the Pentagon recommending cutting such and such a program, closing a base or reducing funding for certain weapons or whatnot, only to have their recommendations completely destroyed by whatever high ranking congressman comes from the district where those jets are built, those subs are made or that base is located.

The system is invested in the status quo, and change will probably never occur. The Military Industrial Complex that Eisenhower warned us about 50 years ago is thriving and doing extremely well.

The function of any system is to perpetuate itself.. nothing is more obvious than the EB Submarine Program... we have enough subs to blow up the world about 3 or 4 times and we need more.

There was a recent aircraft contract that got tied up as a congressman from Alabama got into a pissing match with a congressman for Washington State, the congressman from Alabama won and as a country we lost.

Consider the 700+ overseas bases we continue to staff and the logistics involved, there are something like 287 in Germany, 89 in Italy, 106 in South Korea.. the beat goes on.

When as a nation there is something done significantly about all of these issues, then there is hope for change.. until then it is just same old, same old.

The military likes shiny, expensive things that blow up and are better than everyone elses.. all the while we fight wars in less than third world nations.

Don't forget about the "bases" in Australia. Pine Gap is in the middle of the Country and nobody knows what exactly goes on there. Are their American nukes in the Aussie outback? Probably.

Eventually we would dip into our national reserves of paranoia.

Currently both storage facilities reside in underground bunkers that 'THEY' (commies, terrorists, muslims, ghosts, zombies, and count chocula) all know about.

There are 4 bases in Australia, 3 right in the middle.. ever vigilant waiting for an indigenous uprising.

Everyone knows exactly what those bases are all about. The middle of Australia is perfect to spy on Asia. Satellite dishes on the ground and satellite's in the sky.

The Aussie public gave up protesting against those bases 20 years ago.

21 million people live in Australia. 20 million live in City's. As you know the middle of Australia makes Death Valley look like a great place to live.

Australia has always been a USA ally. The Aussie government/military knows what is going on at those bases.

287 bases in Germany? For what?

The reward we get for "defending" Europe for the last 60 years is their contempt. They spent the dough that they saved on all the social programs...unfortunately, they then forgot to have children so they are about to go under.

Unfortunately the overwhelming military superiority that we enjoyed over the last 20 years will do us little good in the next 20 when we might actually need it.

Thats why we have fake wars, so they can destroy our old equipment and have an excuse to build more.

They used to call this machine "The Military Industrial Complex" past presidents have warned against being this foolish in past speeches.

Nowadays we just call it "Keeping us safe" Yet during the buildup of weapons, we have seen the greatest attack on american soil ever, the quickest decline in $$$, and jobs, We've seen dictators who have been in power for decades toppled by facebook....

yet we keep buildin dumb shizzz like the invisible tank....Selling WMDs to people we hate, and cooporating with evil regimes to get bases (Im looking at you Afghanistan)

    sweet times.

No one is "defending" Europe as the USA bases have been there for 60 years. Would be nice to see the President and Congress shut down those bases; but we know it will never happen.

Werner Von Braun warned against this as well. Rumor has it that on his deathbed warned about the weaponization of space, and the fear cards that would be played to allow for you and I to pay for such an endeavor.

Can you name a GOP candidate that will cut military spending? The Dems wont touch that subject either.
