The more I think about all these circumstances the more I'm settling on this theory. Look, you have these jokers sending some texts that clearly indicate something is going on with football. Yes some of it is dumb humor but let's not be naive.
Now you also have the most telling two pieces of evidence that somehow are ignored by the mainstream media: the 16 psi vs 13 psi texts and Brady printing out the psi range and having it be handed to the officials.
To me this forms a narrative they Brady was sick of refs who sometimes overinflated balls. So he shows them the rules. I could then reasonably see him telling the equipment guy look if you get any more of these 16 psi balloons I'm not playing with them so make sure they get brought down to regulation.
Now would that be cheating in the sense it's tampering with a ref approved ball? Yes. But it's only because the refs didn't do their jobs.
So maybe McNally goes in the bathroom, looks at a few balls, sees they are fine, and leaves. This explains why the science of the balls shows what it does but also explains some of the texts from earlier in the year.
Even if this isn't true, it's the story I would run with as the Pats. It admit some guilt to satisfy the lunatic fringe but clearly is well outside the realm of dirty cheaters: Pats are just looking for a level playing field that is being deprived from them by lazy refs who don't even know the rulebook.
