Do the Pats clinch the 1st seed if the Jets hold on here against the squeelers and the Pats win? Pats could finish 12-4 at worst with a win tonight. Jets, Steelers, Raven could also all finish 12-4 but do the Pats have the tiebreakers?

Nope, they'd have to win 1 of the Buffalo/Miami games.

No Jets Steelers thread? Good idea to run a slow developing run play with the guard pulling on your own goal line, eh Steelers?

I don't know, if i had a good running QB built like a linebacker, maybe I go with a keeper.

lol. They run him now, after they might have blown the game.

No we would need to beat either the Bills or Phins because Jets would hold tie-breaker over us due to having a better division record.

I think the Jets winning made tonight's game irrelevant for pretty much all intents and purposes.

I think win or lose tonight, the Patriots still need one division win to clinch.

Can anyone confirm what the effect of a Patriots loss tonight would mean for strength of victory relative to the Jets? Is there still any possibility for the Jets to take the division tie breaker if the teams finish even on division record?

Pats can lose tonight, and all we need to do is win 1 of the final 2 and we will have the first seed, even if the Jets and Steelers win out. . We will still have the SOV tiebreaker of the Jets.

A Pats win tonight and next week guarantees them the #1 seed.

Right now it is theortically possible for us to be the #6 seed.

That is a neat little app. Tonight's game all of a sudden became irrelevant. But 14-2 has a nice ring to it.

I was pulling for the Jets with the hope that KC wins out and the Jets get the WC over San Diego. I like the Pats chances against anybody, but I think the Chargers are much more dangerous than the lowly, impolding Jets.

How so? A win tonight means any Jets loss gets #1 as well (unless I missed something ), though I don't want to count on that after today...

How? They lost to MIA and NE, we lost to NYJ? We have 1 loss they have 2, we should clinch everything with a win because we have played more convincing football against better teams, more points everything.

If we win tonight and lose the next two, and the Jets win out the Pats and Jets would both be 12-4. The Jets would win the tiebreaker because we would have 3 division losses (Bills, Fins, Jets) and the Jets would have 2 division losses (Pats, Fins).

However, if we lose tonight than win 1 of the next 2 we would both be 14-2 again, except we would both have an equal division record (Jets loosing to Pats + Fins, Pats loosing to Jets + Fins/Bills). The next tiebreaker goes to strength of victory which the Patriots would win.

I see, so the idea is IF we lose to BUF and MIA, that is one huge if so I guess it will be an unofficial clincher tonight.

But if both teams end up at 12-4, which is the only tie possibility, then the SOV won't matter. The Jets get the division, period, based on division record.

Can we please put this to bed?

I've done the math and confirmed that it's now mathematically impossible for the Patriots to lose SOV versus the Jets, no matter what happens from here out.

    So, basically two clinch scenarios:

    1) Patriots win against the Bills or Fins.

    2) Patriots win tonight and the Jets lose one.

So, the answer my own question, if the Jets win out, a win tonight does zilch, other than keeping momentum going.

    My Jersey:

Not necessarily. Look at the following scenarios, each scenario assumes the Jets win their final 2 games (Bears, Bills)

Scenario 1: Pats lose next 3. Jets: 12-4, Pats 11-5 (Packers, Bills, Fins)
Jets have better record, win division.

Scenario 2: Pats win against Packers, lose final 2 games against Bills/Fins. Jets: 12-4, Pats 12-4
Jets and Pats have equal record. Jets win division because they have a better division record (Pats lost to Jets, Fins, Bills and the Jets lost to Pats, Fins)

Scenario 3: Pats lose against Packers, win 1 of the final 2 against Bills/Fins. Jets 12-4, Pats 12-4
Jets and Pats have equal record. Pats win division due to strength of victory. Both teams would have the same division record (Pats lost to Jets, Fins/Bills and the Jets lost to Pats, Fins), so the next tiebreaker would be strength of victory.

Basically, if we get a win against the Bills or Dolphins, we are guaranteed the #1 seed no matter what happens tonight.

After the Jets beat the Steelers today, the New England Patriots better pummel a Green Bay Packers team starting a backup quarterback for the first time in his career. Anything less than a convincing victory tonight at Gillette Stadium, the New England Patriots don't deserve a playoff seeding.

The game is not totally meaningless. If we win tonight, we can win the division with a Jets loss. Regardless of what we do the next 2 games. A loss tonight would require us to win out even if the Jets lose next week.
