Perhaps you should start reading more than a headline, Harry.

Sandra Schlicker, director of wellness and nutrition services for the Office of the State Superintendent of Education, said Chartwells officials confirmed that the scallions were intended as a lunch ingredient, but because of a mix-up, were packaged as the day's snack. Turner's principal intercepted the onions before they reached all classrooms, but "some of the scallions were served to students," Schlicker confirmed.

I used to work with a guy that would eat vadalia onions like they were apples.

Truthfully, I wasn't all that horrified when I read this story. When I was growing up my father grew scallions every spring and summer. It was not at all unusual for us (and by "us" I mean my sister and I and half the neighborhood children) to help ourselves any time we felt like it. We'd pull them out of the ground, wash 'em off under the hose and walk around munching on them.

Heck, scallions are considered high class in some instances. I tend to buy generic 3 pound bags of yellow onions - Mr.P, who is much more civilized and much more the gourmet chef in this house, he buys scallions when he's cooking.

There ya go --- now Harry can rail about how wasteful the government is to send gourmet onions to poor kids in DC - think of the money they could save it they'd send them plain old cooking onions.
