Did he not show you why he probably deserves that contract yesterday?

Sure, we are all filled with anguish and disgust after this the terrible loss, but Welker outplayed the whole team combined to me. This guy is great and really plays for his team no matter what else is going on with this team.

On the play where he got the wind knocked out of him, I thought he was done for the game. He left for a few snaps, watched the offense barely make any ground, comes back in on a 3rd and long and guess who's there to convert the 1st down.... Wes Welker. This guy is tough as a bag of spiked nails.

If this organization can't see how much this guy means to this team and the progress that it makes, they are seriously troubled. Josh McDaniels needs to take along look at himmself and let this Edleman bullcrap go and realize the gem he has right in his face. They wasted money on that worthless dink Ochocinco, they need to overpay once for a guy who really deserves it. It saddens me at the thought that he plays anywhere else but here. I think this season has played out well to show this team that Welker IS that guy, IS that receiver that moves the chains when they need him.

No one else, NO ONE else does it like this guy and yesterday made his case once again.

The Pats don't have an issue paying Welker oodles of money ..... see franchise tag.

The problem is they are hesitant to enter into a long term deal with Wes because, while he may be playing great right now and be worth every penny, chances are he won't be worthy 2/3/4 years down the road.

It's not about current value but future value.

    Lloyd and Edelman are better.

I understand this, great points. Being a business mind, I've thought about this but I just think he will play for his contract if given over some of the previous signings and anyone on the secondary. I hopw Welker comes down a little and takes the deal they give him, from what I heard, it wasn't a terrible deal, he just wanted a little more.

This guy saves this team way too much to not keep him.

Patriots can always give him $16 million for 2 years.

It's not like the Jets are going to give him that.

Welker gets laid out by a massive linebacker and is back after a couple of plays.

Edelman gets over excited scoring a TD and gets a hand booboo and is still missing weeks later.

If the pats try and replace Welker with Edelman by week 3 there will be "Julian IRman" threads :D

Future value or potential as they like to call it is just talent not yet consistently achieved. They coughed up $16M per for the two young TE's this season and entering their third season after a breakout second season they both look like underachieving talent approaching the half way point of the season. Each is battling injuries and struggling to contribute with anything resembling consistency. Consistency of execution is the hallmark of a well coached team. Absent it for any reason all the coaching in the world can't win you games. That is why guys who find a way to play well consistently whether or not they are battling injuries are worth their weight in gold.

True, future value is tied to production and performance.

Unfortunately, you can't always predict future performance when it comes to injuries. However, BB has been, more or less, spot on predicting when father time takes away a players skillset enough that it makes him less valuable tomorrow than he is today. That seems to be BB's mindset where Wes is concerned.

I have zero problem giving Welker the tag again next year at the 11 or 12 mil required. It's more money guaranteed than he was going to get any other way, and it's not as binding as the 3-4 year deal.

Its crazy to see this. These stats are just awesome. I just don't see how the hell you put any receiver on this team over him. Even games where Gronk and the rest aren't playing well, Welker always comes through.

The defense knows it and still can't stop it.

    Re: Wes Welker

It bothers me that we rely so heavily on one man.

God forbid Welker ever gets hurt. Here's to the quick healing of hernandez, gronk, and edelman.
