Just saw that the Dolphins traded away Satele, the OC they selected with the second round pick the Pats gave them for Welker. They got a 6th round pick for him. Wow.

They swapped picks in another round as well, reportedly. It can't be the 5th, since Oakland doesn't have a pick in that round.

Also, the Dolphins drafted Abraham Wright with the 7th rounder they got in the deal as well. He was cut off of IR last year, and is out of the NFL.

It does rate as one of the all-time steals, though. Welker has 223, catches for 2,340 Yds and 11 Tds since joining the Pats. Nobody in the NFL has more catches in that span.

We should be glad that Parcells was not running the show back then

Guaranteed Parcells would have seen the talent in Welker that BB saw and kept him from heading to another AFC east team or at the very worst had him sent to an NFC team.

Thank heavens for poor F.O.s in Miami in 2007 :)

*ROFLMAO* WOW. How the mighty have fallen. Where is FinsFan4Ever?

He was touting Satele as an All-Pro and such after just a few games.

I'll be honest. I am extremely surprised that Parcells traded Satele because he was a good player.

I read the title too quickly and thought it said Welker had been traded. I about crapped my pants

We sure do miss those picks we traded for Wes. We could have gotten someone productive with that 2nd.

Looking into this further, the Fins basically traded Satele and undisclosed draft choices to the Raiders for Jake Grove.

I don't think that Grove is that much of an improvement over Satele.

Add to that the 2009 draft choice that they used to get Tony McDaniel from the Jaguars, and the Phins seem to be opting out of the lower part of the draft.

Well, Florio said that they made the move because I guess Grove is bigger and stronger... as in more fit to handle Vince Wilfork and Kris Jenkins.

So in that sense the "trade," rather swap, does work in their favor.

Well, Florio has been known to not know what he's talking about.

    Grove - 6'3 3/8" and 303 lbs.
    Satele - 6'2 5/8" and 300 lbs.

I really don't think that 3/4" is going to make that much of a difference. The strength is probably debatable as well since they've both been in the league for a year.

Not only is Parcells hit with the cost of Grove, but he's also got to eat whatever remaining Signing Bonus hit that Satele had. As well as the draft picks.

They also gave Grove 5 Yrs/$30M, $14M guaranteed, despite injury history.

We have done well but I rate Moss for a 4th much greater steal than the Welker deal.

The all time one sided traded was the Dallas and Minnesota trade for Herschel Walker. MN made the Jimmy Johnson Dallas teams possible.

No, but you're ignoring that Grove is also heavier :bricks:

    He's definitely too small.

The only reason I'm not so sure about that is that there was a not-insignificant risk of a total meltdown by Moss. The only risk with Welker was the possibility of injuries.

The Dolphins didn't really have any say in where Welker ended up. This was not a conventional trade. In fact, it was a trade in name only, with the Patriots allowing it to be a "trade" and giving up the late round pick to avoid the unpleasantness of a poison pill.

There isn't anything Parcells could have done differently except tendered Welker higher (which I agree he is probably smart enough to have done) or forced NE to use the poison pill and hope they got some media backlash. But there was nothing Parcells could have done to keep Welker out of the division.

 Grove owned Vince in the 2005 season opener before Vince made the adjustment to two-gap around mid-season, since then Grove hasn't had much to smile about when meeting up with Vince. However, he's on film wrestling with Jamal Williams twice a year so they may have seen somethng they liked.

Sure they did. They could have extended him themselves. Parcell's probably would have.
