Sorry, Florio says the Patriots already have Amendola lined up as WW's replacement, and Florio is never wrong.

Maybe not... maybe the disdain just took him in a different direction:

"Ok, I'll take a little less money per year. We'll say 4 years for 7 per, but once a year at my discretion, I get to slap Belichick across the face." :D

lol Florio and why can't pats have both? I think this whole slot receiver thing is overblown. Doesn't Welker end up playing outside quite a bit from time to time?

As I said in the other thread, the "disdain" was a very small part of Cole's report. This part from Giardi's story is totally in line with the real crux of what Cole said:

    $7.5 mil/yr for 4-5 years sounds good :)

Brady to Welker is what made Wes his $$$

$30 Mil + is nothing to sneeze at. Add in the $10 mil he made last year, he should be set for life.

Every WR or TE will play outside once in awhile. Welker will line up outside, but hes used to work the middle of the field the vast majority of plays. Sure, he'll go deep a few times and what not, but hes not a burner and that isn't what his strengths are. He is a slot receiver, he lacks the top speed, length and height to be an outside receiver.

Hahahaha! I sure hope this isn't true. Not sure Amendola and Edelman combined can stay on the field the whole season.

Let sign Welker now and get this deal done and move forward. A $8-$9 million per year deal for 3 years would be a great deal for the Patriots. Let's do this!!

I love Welker, he's such a warrior. BUT, at his age, and the beating he takes, I hope he doesn't take up too much cap space. I'd like to see them resign Edelman as well, he knows the system, is a good return man, and good insurance in the event Welker gets hurt. Anything over 7.5 a year might be overpayment. Anything over 4 years is too much. That's just my opinion. We still need help defensively, still need help WR-wise, could use help if Volmer signs elsewhere. 7.5 will be a big chunk of what we have available with our cap money.

That would be the brilliance of it! Combined, they should be able to stay on the field long enough to make a more-than-adequate replacement for Branch. :)

While I'd like to think that a deal is close, the reason why I doubt it is because they didn't tag him. If both sides were close, why not tag him just to be safe? They weren't going to use it on anyone else, and they have the cap space. Welker wouldn't sign the tender if he thought a long-term deal was close, and the Pats could always withdraw the tender if they wanted to.

Plus, worst comes to worst, you can scrap them both and build up the working parts to salvage a Frankenstein-esque NFL receiver. Call him Edelmandola.

I've spent the last 13 months reading about how a Welker deal is "almost done." I'll believe it when it's done for real. I have a feeling he 's gone. Hope I 'm wrong.

    I hear you there.

One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of us were feeling pretty certain a week or two ago that he was definitely gone. Then Brady did his extension and more money was freed up. Once that happened there was a huge amount of optimism and the entire feeling of the forum turned in a complete opposite direction again.

This whole situation has been weird from day one. We'll know soon enough one way or another.

I'd like this deal to get done ASAP so the Patriots can turn their attention to the other pressing needs.

Right. I'm a bit surprised that no one else has come to terms yet, especially with a list of key role players that we have including Arrington, Woodhead, Edelman, Thomas, etc.

That isn't even taking the other 2 of the 'big 3' into account in Talib and Vollmer, although my worry there is that they are both gone due to the front office not choosing to match their open market value.

Either way we need to get on it here, and quickly.

We'd have the munchkin WR group of the National Football League. Draft Tavon Austin and it'd be complete.

I agree! Stop trying to low ball Welker and get a deal done here! Heck, the dude out played his original contract, didn't hold out wanting a new one, not even mentioning a new contract which is rare this day and age with players who put up that type of production. The Patriots should have at least redone his original deal a couple years into it. Total lack of respect by the organization, imo.

Hey, those days of players wanting to take a paycut to play for the Patriots are over. Win a couple SB's and maybe that will change. In the meantime, pay the players who make this team better and put the ego aside. The koolaid isn't as tasty these days, time to try something new.
