WEEI/Reiss: Pats expected to release Colvin [mergedx6]

Re: Rosie cut by pats

I was thinking the same thing. It seems like the team might be actively purging players that won't fit into whatever new scheme is being implemented.

I wouldn't say they are purging. Just that they foresaw what was coming in the offseason and were like "Holy ****, Dom Capers is available! Maybe we can mitigate our personnel issues with a hybrid 3-4."

It's probably the best way of working the young backers we have - and will likely get in FA - onto the field, instead of throwing them out there in the Belichick scheme like Chad Brown and Monty Biesel in 2005.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: per WEEI Colvin has been cut

Guess I will be trolling Buckeye's message boards learning about the new OLB for the NEPs.

Re: Rosie cut by pats

this is the end of the world.

i'm really going to miss watching Colvin stand on the sidelines injured.

Can BB possibly be trying to free up cap space for a run at Moss or Samuel?

Re: BREAKING NEWS: per WEEI Colvin has been cut

Is one unsubstantiated rumor the basis for you to think Moss will probably be gone?

ABORT MISSION. THIS IS NOT A MOSS THREAD.

Re: WEEI - Pat's just CUT ROSIE

It seemed to me that Rosie knew he was being cut. I remember one quote in particular. He was asked about his contract. He said that most players in the NFL know that when your contract balloons in its last year, you're either going to be cut or restructured.

His quote made me think that he absolutely knew the writing was on the wall.

I think he realized there were options, but I don't think he was aware he was about to be cut. He didn;t even sound as if he'd been approached on a restructure. I think his deal was easy to restructure and would have cut his cap hit in half, and he will have no trouble getting $5M from someone in FA.

I have no idea what we are up to this week. But I guess I'll know what it was in a couple of months...

Re: Rosie cut by pats

This move coupled with what we saw from the Giants Super Bowl, and the arrival of Dom Capers, leads me to conclude we are going to see a hybrid 3-4 this year.

He is the cornerbacks coach, not the defensive coordinator. Why would Pees be changing how we play because of his arrival?

Re: Rosie cut by pats

Finding another pass-rush specialist at #7 might be as easy as Gholston or Groves...but replacing a 3-down OLB, that's another story, I'm not as comfortable with that thought.

That's why I'd love to see Colvin re-signed.

I would think Gholston would project as a 3 down LB at that spot, no? I admit I don't know that much about him, but you usually don't see pass-rush only guys projecting for the top 10.

I know Freeney's stock slipped because he was labelled as a passrusher only, and mocks had him dropping all the way to end of the first, and Colts ended up "reaching" for him in the early teens.

The other guy that had that label was Suggs, who fell to Baltimore at like #10.

And we all know how those two picks worked out ...

No, it's that "when it rains it pours" feeling that I've had since we lost the Super Bowl in such devastating fashion.

Dwight Freeney is a dreadful example to point to as someone who has beaten the pre-draft title of "one dimensional."

Sure eventually they would, but to start their rookie season at OLB on a team that won 18 games the year before? Seems like its asking a lot to me. Doubt the Pats would ask it of a rookie, no matter how high they were drafted.

funny dude. can't we just reflect on the fine memories we have of Rosie and hope that he signs a cap friendly deal with us in a few weeks.

I know people with the similar injury to Colvin in his 2(?) game as a Patriot and they haven't been half themselves even 5 years after the injury.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: per WEEI Colvin has been cut

Either they're gonna re-work a deal (why wouldn't they they of just done it?) Or the Pats think there is something better out there. I really ******* hope they're making the right choice. I'm scared to death of seeing the same LB play we were forced to see in 2005. Lets hope they hit it right on the new guys, who ever it is.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: per WEEI Colvin has been cut

calm down. this doesnt mean he wont be back. still could re-sign.

btw, its a shame he got hurt his first year, he's been a relative disapointment since he signed.

It would be unlikely since he only needs to get $5.5M in new money (bonus and salary) on a new contract elsewher to equal what he was going to get here this season. If we were going to give him that we could have used it as the signing bonus in an extension that would have cut his cap hit in half.

He had a very good season here this year, and we struggled down the stretch without him. He was a playmaker down the stretch last year in the playoffs.

Sounds like AD is going back outside and the entire inside is manned by jags or developmental players until further notice.

Re: Rosie cut by pats

Thanks for the memories Rosie.......

Thanking to many players for their memories today. (Wilson too)

Free agency needs to start soon I am sick of seeing players leave and I want to see some coming in.

Please no one jump ship this team could compete next year without making a single move and We will prolly bring back Moss and we also have free agency and the draft so I am not that worried.

Re: Colvin reportedly cut

Can BB possibly be trying to free up cap space for a run at Moss or Samuel?

Either way you slice it, Rosey had a 7+ million cap hit. That wasn't an option coming off his injury. I suppose the braintrust felt that any re-negotiation would be unlikely to be reached this week, so we're going after Moss or somebody else first. I don't think there's going to be any big money going to Rosey early in free agency until an injury prognosis is realized.

Or, he's been Willie Mac'ed, which makes no sense to me, since when healthy Rosey has plently in the tank, and very little depth behind him.

I'm thinking we're going to have to take runs at Calvin Pace and Brandon Chillar in free agency, and maybe take the chance Rosey will still be there late in the FA game.

Re: Rosie cut by pats

question:

Long term, does BB want AD at ILB or OLB?

Re: Rosie cut by pats

I never want to doubt the braintrust, but WTF?????? I don't get it.

Re: Rosie cut by pats

Hello Howie Long?

His contract would beg to differ.
