anybody want to guess if they'll use the money to sign lance briggs? He's an UFA?

I thought I same thing. They just kick out Thomas to the outside. But, Briggs is going to be big dough. There going to need someone to rush the passer like Colvin did.

I bet you the Patriots redo Brady's contract this year and give him a huge bump.

They don't have to.

But have a look at the next few year's when the salary cap skyrockets.

Brady, Wilfork, Moss.

Big big money coming down the pike.

Maybe we can land Calvin Pace.

I guess we're going to try to win with offense in '08. Wow.

Assuming he doesn't re-sign here, I'll miss Colvin - his early interception vs San Diego and his late intercept/fumble recovery against Indy were real highlight plays for me this past year. He seemed to have a knack for big plays, something the defense lacked when he was gone down the stretch.

So by my rough estimation that makes us $23.2 million under the cap? Last year we were like $29mill under the cap at the start of FA, right? Makes me wonder what they've got planned. That's a lot of room to work with... extensions?... FA signings?... Moss?.. Samuel?.... should be an interesting weekend...

Wow, This LB corps is getting scary. We need to make a play for Calvin Pace and/or we need to go after Gholston in the draft. I was hoping for a CB in the draft, but I guess that is out the window.

Pace/Gholston/Vrabel on the outside
Thomas/Seau/Bruschi/Vrabel on the inside. And I dont particularly like the pass coverage of this bunch either.

Man, I am getting nervous.

This was expected. No way they were keeping him at current price coming off a foot injury. Also, think this is a clear sign they are opening up cap space to re-sign Moss.

Hopefully the door is left open and they try to negotiate something with him. Colvin was one of the few big game players on the D who always seemed to come up with a big play when it was needed. Not to mention he was one of the few guys who played with open emotion.

Will miss him if he doesn't come back, but it's not the end of the world.

(As long as they find a replacement, of course. )

Finding another pass-rush specialist at #7 might be as easy as Gholston or Groves...but replacing a 3-down OLB, that's another story, I'm not as comfortable with that thought.

That's why I'd love to see Colvin re-signed.

This move coupled with what we saw from the Giants Super Bowl, and the arrival of Dom Capers, leads me to conclude we are going to see a hybrid 3-4 this year.

I was thinking the same thing. It seems like the team might be actively purging players that won't fit into whatever new scheme is being implemented.

I dont see a re-signing. If that was the case, they could have just restructured his contact, no?

I agree as well. You have to think they will probably make a few more moves to get all the books in order before FA starts. The player(s) they cut could very well end up back in Pats unis, they just need the space to make some quick strike moves.
