WEEI.com: Wonderlic scores leaking out

The Wonderlic is supposed to be a surrogate for measuring a player's ability to make decisions and react quickly.

Why not replace it using timed/scored rounds of Whack-a-Mole...?

Ben Watson got a 41 or something and still can't learn how to catch the ball. The wonderlic is overrated

You're right.

And wrong.

It depends on the player and the position.

All things being equal - equal talent, skills, and measurables, it can be a big difference maker.

But things are usually far from equal - and a player with better skills and football smarts can by far outplay someone who whupped him in the wonderlic.

Even defensive players who need to be "smart" to understand Belichick's defensive schemes might do poorly on the Wonderlic but show they have "football smarts".

In the end it's just one of many measurables by which drafts are decided.

I'm surprised this hasn't been asked yet... or maybe it's widely known. Tom Brady got a 32.

You can see the archived scores for QBs here: NFL Quarterback Wonderlic scores

I also recommend that you guys check out a scientific journal article related to the website above. It basically explains how the Wonderlic can be so "off", which makes even more sense when you consider the awful QBs who outscored The Franchise. Wonderlic research

The Wonderlic may be a good measure of general real-world or SAT intelligence under stress, but has NO bearing on football smarts.

Football, as Belichick once explained, requires a completely different kind of intelligence. It is more spatial, the ability to see, interpret, and anticipate fast-moving objects very quickly, and is not measured by the Wonderlic.

It is amazing how much weight a crappy 5 minute test can have on a football player's fate.
