Also can't stand D&C's radio schtick. Maybe they're charming fellows when they're not working (though I doubt it), but on the box I find them mean-spirited, smug and nasty — and not tremendously knowledgeable about sports.

Agreed, but this is why The Sports Hub can still get away with having Toucher and Rich on in the mornings. It seems to me that Entercom just has awful business strategy - outside of moving the Red Sox games back from WRKO to WEEI.

Does anyone have the local ratings numbers? I would be shocked if Toucher and Rich drew much less of a listener's audience than D+C. Likewise, I would be even more shocked if Tanguay and Zolak even came CLOSE to Dale and Holley.

I'm intolerant of all political viewpoints on SPORTS talk radio. Honestly, are D&C - or any other sports commentator - educated & informed enough to talk politics with authority? I highly doubt it. They are paid to talk sports, and they can't even do that well.
Just out of curiousity, what kind of education do you need to have in order to give your personal opinion on current events? I mean, do you need a poly-sci degree before you're allowed to have an opinion on the goings on, either locally or nationally?

They are what they are and they don't pretend to be anything they're not. If you want pure, unfiltered sports talk from 6 to 10 then don't tune into WEEI. But they must be doing something right because they've been getting good ratings for well over a decade now.

Speaking only for myself, I rarely listen to them because I don't like the political talk - but I never really understood the mentality of bashing them. If you don't like them, then don't listen to them. It's really that simple.

D&C is pure, unadulterated garbage. The worst part is when they call themselves "conservatives" yet likely think John Locke is a porn star and Rousseau is a type of cheese. As a libertarian, I find them deeply offensive.

I'm still suprised that T&R hasn't caught on more on the sports hub. While I think it sucks that they force comedians to talk sports, they still squeeze enough humor into the show for it to be good.

Show against show, EEI predominantly is targeted at the troglodytes, 98.5 seems to be for the (relatively) more intelligent listeners.

While I agree 100% with your take on D&C, especially with their political talk - T&R has not impressed at all when I've listened to it. Yesterday, for instance, they had some bit on where they interviewed some guy who was bragging about raping a woman in her sleep. T&R were laughing about it, saying the guy was lying, and that it was funny. I found it pretty disturbing. My small sample size has shown them to be as sexist (some of their comments during the pink hat bits are a little over the top) as D&C are racist & annoying. I'm all for offensive humor - if it's funny & done tongue in cheek, but T&R haven't hit that yet while I'm listening. They've been genuinely mean-spirited and low-brow.

I agree that they are trying to hit their rhythm with the new sports format. They generally are at their best when they interview crazy people such as the infamous Chili Guy. In the winter of '08, they produced the best bit I have heard on the radio, period. In the wake of Heath Ledger dying, they were able to get a member of the Westboro Baptist church on for an interview by pretending they were a Christian station (praise108). The manner in which they went after this lady was brilliant. If you have headphones at work, do a search on youtube for toucher and rich vs westboro baptist church.

When they are at their best, they are up there with South Park for wit and social commentary.

Yeah, I have heard them do some funny bits. Don't get me wrong, "pink hats" can be pretty funny. But, I guess I prefer humor that is a little more self-deprecating than they aim for. Their sports talk, so far, is on par with or better than D&C because they are forced to acknowledge they aren't experts and seek out help in that regard. Plus I like John Wallock (spelling?)

re: WEEI: Callahan leaving D&C for Big Show? (Mod Edit) Political Flame

The only thing worse than D&C is todays replacement.

Butch Stearns (Is it RBI or RBI's)
&
Greg ****erson

Stearns makes me sick.
I don't care about Braintree, or Bruce Springstien.

****erson is a complete rump swab.

I don't care about Braintree, or Bruce Springstien.

Yeah, what is it with all Boston sports writers loving Bruce Springsteen?

To get paid for your opinion, yes, I hope one would be highly educated on not just current events, but history and political science.

re: WEEI: Callahan leaving D&C for Big Show? (Mod Edit) Political Flame

To say that being "tolerant" and "open-minded" is meant as a universal requirement to be agreeable with and receptive to all manner of political rant in any forum at any time is about as clear cut a straw man as one can build.

Yes, there used to be a time in the country where political arguments didn't devolve into personal attacks. (Now, they skip the political stuff and jump right into the personal attacks)

re: WEEI: Callahan leaving D&C for Big Show? (Mod Edit) Political Flame

Then you're welcome to join the 6 or 7 other people in Boston who listen to NPR. But why do I have a feeling that you would probably have a different opinion if D&C were on the other end of the political spectrum?

Regardless, out here in the real world, Entercom management really doesn't give a darn what courses D&C took in college. All they care about is the bottom line, which is ratings. That's what they are getting paid for and since they are generating great ratings, don't hold your breath for a change anytime soon.

Clearly there is a strong demand in the Boston market for combination sports/political talk radio during the morning drive. It's not my personal cup of tea - I only tune in when there are major events taking place in the local sports scene when I know they will be more focused on sports and less on politics.

I just think people look ridiculous when they admit they listen to it then complain and whine about how much they hate it.

You loved "Headlines"??? You love listenting to two guys read the newspaper on the radio? Why, too lazy to actually read The Herald?

J D Sal

It has been going on for 10 years and is one of their highest rated segments.

And I agree with their viewpoints on most subjects.

Yes to your condescending bolded statement.

Obviously you are intolerant of their viewpoints as clearly only those with which
you agree are tolerable. They are citizens of the US and the Commonwealth
and as eminently qualified as anyone else in this God forsaken hole.

Isn't it much more likely that NONE of these people are qualified to be paid to tell other people what to think when it comes to politics?

Having a brain and a mouth are not good enough pre-requisites for earning a paid job informing other people on the issue of politics.

How would it be any different than pulling a random person - without a medical background - off the street and asking them to spread, via radio, their advice on medical issues?

It's not ridiculous.

I commute home in New England - I like sports - I want to listen to sports talk radio more than I want to listen to anything else on my radio, even if its shyt. [Until a few weeks ago] I had essentially ONE option for sports talk. I have every right to complain about what's on it, whether or not I decide to opt to listen to it.

You'd be wrong. I don't like it any better when Felger espouses liberal beliefs on EEI or now, 98.5. Again, I'm very consistent: I find it absurd that people paid to talk about sports believe they are qualified to talk about politics. Liberal or conservative, it's a) asinine they think they can be viewed as an authority b) not what they are paid to talk about c) not what I, as a listener, want to listen to.

Left wing- right wing - who gives a crap on the FOOTBALL forum?

What part of no political posts on the football forum do you guys not understand? It's not that hard to comprehend, is it?

This place has been provided, free of charge to post your political flames.

http://www.patsfans.com/new-england-patriots/messageboard/12/political-discussion.html

Every time some one posts a thread with either Dennis- Callahan- Olbermann- the same flames start flying.

My first reaction was to either close the thread or move it to the POLITICAL FORUM. But, I'm not going to to do that right now. I'm going to leave it up as a shining example of what not to post on the football forum.

Gotta say that the only part of D&C I listen to besides Boomer & Brady's interviews is the hilarious, in my view, headlines segment. Listening to Jerry go ballistic amuses me.

Seems that station managers' recipies for morning drive time radio success includes a mix of current events along with the main venue. Like it or not, the mix drives ratings. People are voting with their ears.

You have 2 options:

1) Buy Sirius, or
2) Kwitcher*****in

Well, there's that pesky thing called the Constitution that says any one of us can talk about politics all we want.

There are plenty of options available to anyone willing to pay $10 a month. If you want free radio, your options are going to be limited.

Wow. What a load of garbage this thread has turned into. Not surpised that some people (won't name names) that almost NEVER post in the Pats forum and tend to stay in the Political forum at all times make their first sports related posts in this thread.
