    "Erik Scalavino ‏@PFWErik
Brian Waters' #Patriots locker has been cleaned out."

Looks like we're getting younger. OL will be fine if Vollmer is OK. Scary if he's not.

    Edit :

"To clarify, Waters still has a nameplate and a space in #Patriots locker room. It's now just much emptier than two days ago."

I am not a happy camper. Let's hope he's getting a new locker there, or they're just cleaning it.

Too bad. Waters manning the RG spot would have the ideal situation. Honestly though, the bigger concern has to be at RT.

Connolly or Thomas at RG then?

The only good thing from Waters not returning? Give Hightower #54!

    Not necessarily

    Jeff Howe ‏@jeffphowe

Funny, lockers have been moved around. Ridley and McCourty walked to their old stalls without realizing they'd been changed.

Sounds like they are just moving them around.

Mixed feelings on this one. Obviously, he's better than all of the alternatives. On the other hand, I've never been a big fan of letting guys skip training camp just because they're "too old for that ****."

With loss of Light and Waters and Mankins and Vollmer trying to return from surgery, some big question marks up front.

well hopefully they are just moving lockers around....because if not, the Koppen cut looks bad.

I was hoping you keep Koppen and move connoly into waters spot...

we can NOT play cannon unless we want brady to get killed

No it doesn't. He was a shadow of his decent self. They brought in another center. We'll be fine.

They could really mess with the beat writers by fooling around with Waters' locker every day.

"Waters' locker now has party streamers and balloons on it. We don't know what this means, but we assume it's good news."

Koppen was done regardless of Waters. Connolly should be playing center regardless.

I think it's safe to say there's no way of legitimately reading into the Waters situation, but this doesn't mean he's gone.

FWIW, Waters came to NE 8 days prior to the season opener and had a pro bowl season.

Yeah I was aware of that and I hope he does the same this year. I'm just trying to understand the point of keeping it a secret.

This whole Waters issue has "retirement holdout" written all over it. Which in all fairness would be understandable, becouse Waters deserves a payrise based on last years performance.

So if I'm correct, then either:
    A) They are trying to work it out / clear cap space
    or
    B) We are going into the season without him trying to see if we can manage without him while Waters is waiting for a phone call

I read via its agent that the locker has agreed to appear on "Dancing with the Stars" this season and has landed a Head and Shoulders endorsement deal.

if he's "contemplating retirement" instead of just sitting out preseason then Bellichick doesn't have to tell other players that certain guys get to skip it. It might even be unspoken between them where BB knows he'll probably come back and Waters knows that if he says he's contemplating retirement instead of just sitting out then he will get a pass since he's a valuable addition to the roster at any point he wants.

its not a simple retirement....if it was, it would have happened a long time ago

I guess it is possible that it is some kind of holdout, but if it was, and the team wanted him around, I am sure they would have sweetened the pot for him

whatever it is, I doubt it is someone playing games.

regardless, the season will go on, and if pass protection becomes an issue, the pats have smart coaches and a smart QB that will produce a gameplan that will mitigate the problem. the pats have plenty of short route guys.

I do like Cannon's long term prospects as an RG......he is prototypical for the position. the right side will grade the road

Wonder if BB made a deal -- skip all of training camp, but then you have to skip the first week so we can protect ourselves re: fully guaranteed contracts. So, back after week one?

I heard some talking heads say the same thing. That's certainly plausible but if that's been figured out by you and others then you'd think the players have figured that out too.

I guess the next step is he'll be placed on the retired list. Shame if so because the OL goes from good to great with him in there. I'd like to see what Cannon can do at RG. His weakness is his foot quickness from what I can tell. When he got beat at RT, it was generally to the outside and the pass rusher typically used his speed. That should be less of a problem with a shift to RG.
