Vince Redd

Looking over some of the roster discussions, I see that hopes are high for Crable, while we are dismissing Vince Redd.

Redd is an intriguing prospect.

In the 2008 draft, he was a physical marvel. In the OLB class, he was both the tallest (6-5.5) and the fastest (4.5 40). Interestingly, he also had the highest passes-broken-up stat in his OLB draft class, plus two INT's. He spent two years at Virginia, then transferred to Liberty.

He played in five games with the Patriots last year on special teams and back-up OLB, collecting 8 tackles and 1 forced fumble in part-time duty.

Our assumptions from the draft included guesses that either the 2009 crop of OLB's was too small and too slow, or that Belichick likes the young players on the roster. Either scenario gives some support to Redd.

Imagine if Redd transferred from Liberty to Penn State or Michigan or Ohio State, and came out at 6-5.5, 263, 4.5 40, 39" vertical leap, 63 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 6 PBU's/2 INT's. He'd likely be a Day One draft candidate. Instead, Redd effectively transferred from Liberty to the Patriots, receiving even better coaching.

I'm not suggesting that he is penciled in opposite Thomas, and there is no need for Taylor. However, I think he is a more viable option than some are considering.

I didn't realize he was that fast in his predraft workouts!

I think Vince Redd is a good candidate for OLB. We have to keep in mind the year he has had in the system. It's very likely an OLB/Pass Rush specialist would help, but I'm not convinced it's necessary, personally.

You guys maybe mixing up a couple of players here. I believe it was Guyton that had the poor bench showing at the combine, which contributed to him not being drafted. I also believe Guyton was the fastest LB at the combine 2008.

That's mixing OLB and ILB prospects, to some extent.
I had Guyton at ILB, and Redd in the OLB group.
Among all linebackers, Guyton was a bit faster than Redd.

Redd was fastest OLB.
Redd reportedly had 13 reps at 225, low for an OLB, but had a big vertical leap. Guyton had 16 reps, also low.

As noted, less importance for a long-armed 6-6 OLB to have big upper pecs.

I've always been high on Redd, because of his unreal upside if nothing else. He may be a work in progress, but he has an extraordinary combination of size and athleticism. I've consistently had him on my list of OLBs making the roster in 2009 - ahead of TBC and possibly even Wood. We already know what the upside of TBC and Alexander is, and it's not very high - and easily replaceable. I would much rather see the Pats work on developing Redd, Crable and Woods - all 6'5" guys with nice length and speed.

I agree with Jays52 about the bench press numbers not being particularly relevant. Redd is probably raw, but I very much hope he keeps a roster spot in 2009.

Anybody know why Groh kicked him off the team at Virginia? I have to admit from scouting reports he seems like a steal for our system.

While at UVa, during the time when he wasn't in the dog house, he still had trouble getting playing time. He was very young, in every way that can be measured, and didn't show the focus necessary to win playing time.

When he was originally recruited, he was part of Groh's first class at UVa, and it was quite a coup to pull him out of Tennessee. He'd been getting star treatment in high school.

From his recruitment page on a UVa site (the Sabre.com):

Vince Redd is a linebacker/tight end prospect who projects as a defensive end in college. He is one of the top players in the country at his position. He hails from Elizabethton High School, the alma mater of VT receiver Shawn Witten and Shawn's brother Jason Witten, a UT Vol tight end. Redd was Class 4A All-State as a junior and is a gifted basketball player, as well, though football appears to be his future. He has said he wants to play both sports in college, and he doesn't intend to redshirt as a freshman. Vince attended the Tom Lemming photo shoot on May 5th, 2002 in Blacksburg, and he is one of Lemming's preseason Top 100 players. As a senior, Vince Redd made a 104 tackles and scored seven touchdowns in a variety of ways. He caught three TDs, returned two fumbles for TDs and also scored on a kickoff return and an interception return.

Redd, who played linebacker all throughout high school, is being recruited to play inside linebacker by Virginia.

If Eric Alexander is on this team come September, we are not making very much progress !!

so wouldn't Redd have competed with guys like Sintim, Ahmad Brooks and (team-leading tackler) Jon Copper? That's a pretty tough lineup.

I saw 4.75, though there are variances.

What was reported at the time:
TFY
More than a dozen scouts lined the field for Liberty’s pro-day workout today and former Virginia transfer Vince Redd came away the big winner.

An all-Conference selection last season, the outside linebacker measured 6-feet 6-inches, weighed 263 pounds then turned in an outstanding workout.

Redd timed his forty’s in the mid-4.5 second area, with some stopwatches reading as fast as 4.48 seconds. He posted a 39-inch vertical jump and 9-foot-10-inch broad jump.

The only stain on his otherwise outstanding performance was the bench press, where he was able to only complete 13 reps.

Gil Brandt:
Pro day updates: Schools H-M
Nine NFL teams sent representatives to see 11 players working out indoors on a rubber track. The main attraction was pass-rushing linebacker Vincent Redd, a player who transferred to Liberty after initially attending Virginia and being dropped from the team for violating team rules …

" DE/LB Vincent Redd (6-5 7/8, 262: Ran the 40 in 4.54 and 4.63, had a 39 ½-inch vertical jump, 9-foot, 10-inch long jump, 7.30 cone drill, had 13 reps in the bench press, ran position drills.

...and Chris Long.

None of them. Sintim and Copper (who was a walk on) made the scene after he left. Brooks was an IL. Chris Long also came in after Redd was a member of the team, and at DE.

Redd was fairly quickly placed at OL.

Redd wasn't invited to the combine. Redd didn't have a good Pro-Day regarding his strength.

Results:
10 yd. Split - 1.56
20 yd. Split - 2.58
40 yd. - 4.58

225 Bench - 13
Broad Jump 9'10"
Vertical - 39
3 Cone - 7.30
20 yd Shuttle - DNR

Guyton wasn't much better doing 15 at the Combine and 16 at his Pro-Day in terms of reps.
