You all know how I feel about the monopoly that is public education. I support public education, but feel that choice & competition is a must. That's why I love the idea of a voucher system. I hope this passes so other states will smarten up and follow their lead.

Utahns Can Vote for School Choice Tuesday

    By John Stossel

Next Tuesday, Utah voters go to the polls to decide if their state will become the first in the nation to offer school vouchers statewide. Referendum 1 would make all public-school kids eligible for vouchers worth from $500 to $3,000 a year, depending on family income. Parents could then use the vouchers to send their children to private schools.

What a great idea. Finally, parents will have choices that wealthy parents have always had. The resulting competition would create better private schools and even improve the government schools.

But wait. Arrayed against the vouchers are the usual opponents. They call themselves Utahns for Public Schools. They include, predictably, the Utah Education Association (the teachers union), Utah School Boards Association, Utah School Employees Union, Utah School Superintendents Association, the elementary and secondary school principals associations, and the PTA. No to vouchers! they protest. Trust us. We know what's best for your kids.

    .........

This anti-voucher coalition says vouchers will only benefit children who would have gone to private schools anyway. But the Vote for 1 Campaign points out that current private-school students would get vouchers only if their families are low-income. So the law would give new opportunities to parents and children who today have no options at all.

Man I hope this passes. It is shameful to the point of absurdity how these liberal special interest groups are doing anything and everything they can to maintain their stranglehold on the education of children.

They know their ways are failing. Their biggest enemies are people who normally vote democratic, such as minorities.

Why am I about certain that vouchers will only mean that I'll end up paying for all kids to go to school rather than just the ones who go to public schools?

Call this what it is. Welfare for the not so poor.

Sure Liberals control the Boston Public School system; but that's because Liberals control many of the levers of power generally in Boston and its that way because that's what the voting public wants.

Lots of other places have an entirely different political climate yet the problems seem to exist all over.

Well, everyone who pays taxes pays for public education. That would include those people who send their kids to private school. Those people pay twice. Once for the public school via taxes, and a second time for the private school's tuition. A voucher system simply gives those people who have already paid, a tax credit to use someplace else. What would truly be best, would be attaching money to each child. Like 20/20 showed in their piece, which is what some other countries do. They attach $10,000 persay, to each kid, and the school the parents send that kid to gets the $10k. That would be the best policy. The problem with that is it would destroy what is the government run monopoly on education, and hurt the all powerful teachers union.

The problems exist because there is no competition or accountability. The teachers union ensures that.

Home School & Private School it's the only way to get the kids that want to learn how to read and write out of the clutches of the Liberal Politically Correct Socialist Brainwashers.

You don't send your child to school to learn how to disrespect society, burn the flag, hate god, blame America, hate white people or masturbate, you send them to learn resding writing and how much two & two is.

Get your kids out of those f-cking left wing public schools, they are hell bent on destroying the whole next generation and turning them all into little Jimmy Carter clones.

Once these systems start showing results it'll be the beginning of the end for govt education as we know it.

No Child Left Behind, not a school system by one that dictate them... although it was a non partisan bill it was regulated by the Republican Adm.. I know there was a comment period, but for the most part it is an unweildy regulation that took a lot of time to digest.

Vouchers eh? Sounds like another Republican plan to disenfranchise the poor, oppress minorities, take medicine from old people and children, and possibly kill puppies and kittens.

Seriously though, I think it's worth a try. This system we have now is failing more and more by the day.

First, I don't get the tiered voucher amount concept. If a school costs X, do I only get 0.5xX if I live above the poverty level ?

Second, what happens when everyone wants to go to the best school ? How do they pick the kids ? I sense more affirmative action heading our way.

Third, what about getting the kids to the better schools ? More busses ? More gas, more money, more . . . global warming :D

Schools are fine now - as long as the parents and kids want to learn.

It's not the school that's ruining the kids, it's the liberal teachers and the politically correct society.

KEEP YOUR CHILD OUT OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS IF POSSIBLE YOU WILL MOLD A MUCH BETTER WELL ADJUSTED HUMAN BEING.

DON'T LET THE BASTARDS TURN YOUR CHILD INTO A HARRY REID OR A JEANNE GARAFOOL.

I mostly slept through Economics in college; but I do know what happens to a product when there's a giant increase in demand for it. What happens to the price of private schooling when there's 5 or 10 times the number of students able to pay for it? The price will go up until the market is back in equilibrium and then the government will have to increase the voucher amount which will trigger more inflation. In no time Harvard will be cheap compared to your average grade school.

You should watch that 20/20 video on youtube. Snake Eyes posted it. It's 40 minutes long, but really worth the look. In a district where they have a charter school, the results were so much better than the public school, that they had to hold a legit lottery to decide who got to go to the charter. They show them spinning the wheel, and picking out a winning number, where parents would cheer winning. Anyhow, watch it if you have the time.
