Rep. Walter Jones, the North Carolina Republican who invented the phrase "Freedom Fries," invited me into his Capitol Hill office Thursday morning, a cluttered space festooned from floor to ceiling with military memorabilia, Pentagon plaques and photographs of soldiers. Then he pulled out an e-mail he had recently received from an Army captain who served in Iraq.

The email quoted another American soldier serving in Iraq, a voice that Jones wanted people to hear. "Tell all those *******s in D.C. to get us the f--- out of here. This is bull****," Jones said, reading from the email, but choosing not to pronounce the f-word in full. "Either that or tell them to tell Bush to send over the twins. They can bunk with me. That would be useful."

Jones is not a natural dove. He sits on the Armed Services committee and his district includes Camp Lejeune, the home base of nearly 47,000 sailors and marines. But Jones is one of a handful of Republican congressmen to break ranks with President Bush and the GOP leadership over Iraq. In recent months, he has been campaigning for a "full and honest" debate on the Iraq war.

You will see more and more Republican politicians growing weary of the war and joining ranks with Rep. Jones.
After all, a politician has to be elected first, and this war is a potato getting warmer, each and every day.

We are going to leave at least 50,000 troops in Iraq for a LONG time. I think I already posted that thread.

So, that soldier better get used to it.

As long as we have troops there, we continue to destroy and suppress the Iraqi people. What a frickin' mess!

I don't know what the problem is. When you sign up, you realize you will most likely end up fighting overseas. Surprise, that's what happens.

I have been in the Military 16 years, so it really does not faze me about going to war. I just get bothered by the posts that say suck it up. The thing is, when many signed up we had pleanty of troops to rotate in and out. Now, with all the draw downs, the same people are deployed for years without R & R. A human can only go for so long with out any kind of rest physically and mentally. From ready your posts, you have no idea what it takes to go to war and sustain a military. I applaud your backing of the President. I personally think he is the worst President we have had in decades. But don't minimize what we are doing as a military just to prove your support.

    Two comments :

    - One, I don't "back" the President. I voted for the Libertarian in 2004 because I don't like Bush. Although I do acknowledge that if he's right in his strategy it will save humans from themselves because the problem in the middle east isn't going away if we withdraw.

    - Two, I don't minimize what the military is doing. But as difficult as it must be, that's what people sign up for when they sign up for military service. No-one said it was easy - at least I don't think they did. But like it or not, they signed up to do what they're told.

Wow a protest vote for a libertarian. Why can't you just say I voted for the libertarian because their philosophy is better than either party's??

Well, I'm kind of in between two parties much like most people. I typically vote (R) because my disagreements with them are less problematic to me than my disagreements with the (L)s. But I wasn't voting for Bush again.

BelichickFan, I'd like you to say suck it up/that's what they volunteered for, to someone that's on their third or fourth deployment, in the last 3 years.

Make sure your Blue Cross/ Blue Shield is paid up first.

That is an oversimplistic and stupid answer. You really show your ignorance.
