The reason why the target is soft drinks is becuase cola manufacturers dodged a huge tax in the sugar tax. Which is why colas made here in America use Corn Syrup instead of real sugar.

Perhaps no that they are just going to tax an individual product based on itself rather than what it's made of, they can go back to using real sugar.

If your not fed up with taxes yet... my goodness.

What has our country come too.

The Modis Operandi is to tax anything the majority of Americans use, and Enjoy.

Somebody have to pay for UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE because IT AIN'T FREE.

Obama wants this or that BUT he never tells us how much it's going to cost us.

Can somebody tell me why Obama needs to create a new program when WE CAN'T PAY for it in the first place?

I have enough with this clown. Frankly, i'm tired of this BS. I hope that most of you earn 100000 dollars a year. If you don't, you have nothing left after paying all BS taxes.

They better add a notable tax to sneakers - to prevent everyone from running to Canada or Mexico

Below is a hand typed quote from Ron Paul's book which I though of when hearing about the Soda tax.

It's pretty effed up when you think of it, and how we allow our government to be bought in order to benefit so few. And the crazy thing is, they already take SO much money and they always need more...

Last I heard we voted down the tax increases so they're going to have to slash spending until it bleeds . . . then slash some more. Just as I would like. Thanks for asking.

No one who makes under $250k will see an increase in their taxes...

    Unless they smoke or chew...
    Unless they drink alcohol...
    Unless they drink soda...
Unless they buy gasoline for a car...

When will the madness end? I laughed at people who bought into the mantra of "no one under $250k" will see an increase in their taxes, because it was so preposterous to think that Obama could implement his massive government programs without upping taxes.

No increases unless you choose to purchase products that aren't necessary items.

Luxury items getting taxed...heaven forbid they do that to take advantage of items that!

While you can live without it, I doubt many Americans are going to be happy calling soda a "luxury item". How far we have fallen.

They ought to outlaw all soda. Diabetes in a can is all it is. It's garbage is all.

I wouldn't ordinarily be for that but since the gov't is paying for it anyway through covering everyone's health benefits they might as well.

The gov't should come up with a plan to force people to get exercise too.

We already have a default tax on it...in many states have the "deposit" on carbonated beverages is just a tax since I doubt the vast majority of people who pay it ever redeems their money back that they pay into it.

Why not ban lard, margarine, hydrogenated oils etc. while you are at it...ban anything that people choose to consume instead of the alternatives that are more health friendly

Just because we're already taxed on it isn't a good argument to tax more.

Wasn't making an argument for it, was pointing it out that it's a quasi tax already.

It's more like a quasi bribe to recycle as you get the money back if you recycle it. Not that I like bribes either.

Wow. Didn't realize that these were now considered "luxury items." Funny, though, Obama didn't say that you wouldn't have your taxes raised if you decided to to drastically change your lifestyle. He said that if you made less than $250k, you would NOT have any increase in taxes. It's patently untrue. Why should someone have to stop smoking, or drinking soda, to avoid a tax? By the way, who do these taxes hit hardest? The poor and middle class.

I guess we should just tax everything except for bread and water and air. You can live without all the other "luxury items" that you buy every day. Coffee...TAX IT. Donut...TAX IT. Hamburger...TAX IT. Gum...TAX IT. Breath mints...TAX IT. Laundry detergent...TAX IT. You get the idea. We're also getting into the arena of why we revolted against Britain in the first place.

Oh, since when is buying gas for your car a luxury? It's not. Try getting to work without a car when you live an hour from your office, and there's not subway or bus that goes from your house/town to your office...

Truth. What a horrible thought; it reminds me of the way say a dying person or a death row inmate might crave some small, simple thing like a soda. Sweetjezuz.

Anyone forcing you to buy those items?

Can you get by without them?

Yes. You can. You can live without those things, you choose to buy them

Most people don't bother taking it all back to get the money because the money you get back just isn't worth the effort and no doubt that's exactly what the govt was counting on.

You can put cans and bottles out in your recycle bin and the recycling truck picks them up,most apt/condo complexes have several separate recycle bins on the property where you can put newspapers, cans and bottles, etc.

You don't need to take them back for money in order to recycle.
