"We deeply regret that it happened, and we apologize to all the individuals who were affected by such abhorrent research practices," the joint statement said. "The conduct exhibited during the study does not represent the values of the United States, or our commitment to human dignity and great respect for the people of Guatemala."

I don't know about you, but I wasn't even alive then, so I am not sure that I feel like there is anything particularly wrong with me based on this atrocity.

It's too bad our government isn't more like Guatemala's:

This "study" was directed by the same doctor who directed the Tuskegee experiment.

I'd be looking into just about done under his watch - and praying.

Wonder if these two US studies will ever make it into the Texas textbook system?

It was only prisoners and crazy people... :D
Frankly, I wouldn't be that offended if they still did it.
If you're on death row, and we have to pay millions to keep you alive just to kill you, we might as well gain something from you!

How about the military? Would it upset you to know that they've also experimented upon military personal without their knowledge?

Ever heard of MKULTRA? MKULTRA officially got underway in April, 1953, and experiments included administering LSD to CIA employees, military personnel, doctors, other government agents, prostitutes, mentally ill patients, and members of the general public in order to study their reactions. LSD and other drugs were usually administered without the subject's knowledge or informed consent, a violation of the Nuremberg Code that the U.S. agreed to follow after World War II.

How about radiation experiments which included members of the military?

How about the previously untested vaccines given to military personnel fighting in the Gulf War?

    Still not offended?

It's also what Hitler did. Did you care to change your opinion?

What? An apology 70 years later isn't acceptable?
People roll their eyes when someone brings up a conspiracy theory. Do you think the U.S. kept this hushed up for a few years? Do you think someone may have come out publicly to say that our government infected people with STD's. Did they have tinfoil back then?
But then was then, and our government has learned their lesson..................

The problem with actions like this is how the children and grandchildren of our previous generations have to pay for their actions down the line. It is crucial for us to have good relations with the worls and our neighbors especially. People have generational memories that span beyond our own super-special lives. Not everyone can forgive and forget like wealthy Anglo Americans from the US can.

We have no problem with that because most of us don't wake up in the morning fearing for our lives and the lives of our children because we are helpless against the actions of our corrupt government or the forces of grinding poverty and disease. It's easy for us to say "let's let bygones be bygones" to the Guatemalans.

    Military is different than criminals.

    Again, same as above.

Once you rape or murder someone, you no longer are a human in my eyes and we should use your body and mind for the furthering of human knowledge and the betterment of society.

Evidently war crimes and torture is cool in your book and our legal system is absurd. I look forward to your future posts.

War crimes -> crime -> criminals. I think I said something about criminals...
As for torture, heck ya I am all for torture. Not for use against average joe, no, but against terrorists, yes.
And seriously, if you think our legal system ISN'T absurd, you are insane. Pretty sure when I can break in to your house, injure myself and sue you successfully, our legal system is a joke.

Again, I will clarify my thoughts:

If you do evil things, (rape, murder, etc...) then you no longer are human in my eyes. We experiment on animals, and rapists and murderers are no better than animals so why not experiment on them?

Military, people with mental issues, people who commit minor crimes, blacks, whites, yellows, reds, browns, pinks, oranges, Jews, gypsies, carnival workers, illegal immigrants, Democrats, Republicans, Independants, Jets fans, people who text while driving, people who watch reality tv, people involved in a ponzi scheme, etc... do NOT deserve to be experimented on or tortured UNLESS they are evil, IE: part of a terrorist organization, a rapist, a murderer, etc.

    Clear?

I couldn't do it myself, and I certainly gain no pleasure from it. I just am not offended by the thought of it.

I am sure Obama made a phone call to Guatamala and had a conversation many people on this board are familiar with...

"Um, hi.... yeah, it's me.... look we need to talk and I need you to promise not to freak... I am really really sorry about this whole thing but, um, well I went to the doctor and uh... well, I think I may have given you syphillis.... I'm so sorry and please don't get mad..."
