Re: Undrafted Free Agent Signings

Did it ever occur to you that it might be best to give Brady the best protection possible on BOTH sides of the line? Vollmer's still on his rookie deal. It's way too early to talk about moving him. Now if he's on the verge of free agency and he won't talk extension that's another matter. Let's not go creating any more holes on this team that aren't already there.

How do you know that we can't protect him better than Vollmer can right now? With Cannon, Maneri, Yeatman, or any of the other guys in the works it's very possible that we have a stud to handle the right side when Vollmer's deal comes due.

The time to look into replacing a player is BEFORE you NEED to replace them.

Re: Undrafted Free Agent Signings

I wished we got Noel Devine. The guy has a knack for making big plays and Woodhead has shown that there is a place for a small, shifty, speedy back in this system.

Devine should play Flag Football.

Where would he fit? you have woodhead, vereen and maybe faulk. I think people forget that woodhead got here week 3 or 4 and basicly hit the ground running im exited to see what he can do with a year with the team

Oh, it appears the rule that the Colts cannot have a decent backup still holds: Scott Tolzien ended up signing with the Bolts. :)

Re: *** Will YEATMAN!!! ***

I see Vollmer being traded next offseason or franchised and traded the next offseason. There's too much value in a potential franchise LT to keep him at RT for the duration of his contract and get just a 3rd comp pick out of him. Hence, now's the time to work on getting a new right tackle for 2012 and beyond.

Hey Sciz--I hate to do it, but I'm going to respectfully disagree with some of the thinking here.

Are you being serious when you say that Sebastian Vollmer can currently net us a "first round pick??" I can't see anyway of how we could get a "1st round pick" out of someone who started 8 games last yr, and had one good season in 2010 where he made 2nd team All-pro? You claim that if he left after his rookie deal was up, we would get JUST a "3rd round comp pick out of him?" If someone told me we could get 2 more yrs of Vollmer at a reasonable price on a rookie deal, and also get a 3rd round pick for him for nothing in return if he's not resigned, I'd be pretty happy.

While I can appreciate your tendency to look ahead, and I agree that they shouldn't wait until the last minute, there is absolutely no reason why anyone should be worried about Sebastian Vollmer's contract right now. He will not be a FA until late February 2013....and if they choose to franchise him at that point, he wouldn't be due until February 2014. So at the very least we have 2 more yrs at a minimum.

There's really no reason to believe that there couldn't be a reasonable deal offered to Vollmer too, I think maybe some posters are assuming that there's no way we could afford him. I think that is not necessarily true, at least at this point. Of course we all hope for him to continue to have the kind of season that he had last yr, so when all is said and done, you very well could be right about him wanting LT money, instead of RT money.

There's also the possibility that he could even be our LT at some point, depending on the injury situation, and the development of Solder.

Of course, the fact that a lot of teams are/will continue to give up ridiculous deals for OL just proves your point even more. So far we have seen Doug Free from Dallas get approx. 8 million per (4 yrs/32), and Yanda from Baltimore just got approx. 6 1/2 million per as a guard. (5/32). If we're actually going to try and offer something or lock up either Mankins or Light, these outrageous contracts just from yesterday will not help the situation any, so if they're going to act they better do it soon.

Oh, BTW--your new avatar of Jeff Tarpanian looks like a porn star pic straight out of the 70's adult film collection. Just one man's opinion ;)

Plenty of teams will spend a 1st round pick on guys that have played 0 games the prior season. If I was the GM of the Lions I'd make that trade for Vollmer in a heartbeat, as their investment in Stafford is shriveling up do to their lack of ability to protect him.

You say that like it's a bad thing:D

Faulk is on his way out and Vereen will get carries on 1st and 2nd downs. Plus you can have Devine return KOs and punts. I just think he's going to be a good player in the NFL and you can never have enough good players.

Woodhead is listed on the Pats official site as 5'8 195.

Though I doubt he'd reach 5'8 standing on a chair.

I'd rather keep Vollmer for 2 more yrs at a minimum, and that's without signing him long term again, or possibly even slapping the tag on him through 2013. With 2 more yrs on a cheap, rookie deal, that's the best move in my opinion. I'm not sure why we're assuming that he's already a goner, when he's only played 2 yrs on his rookie deal, and had one good yr where he made 2nd team all-pro?

As far as us getting a "1st round pick" right now for Vollmer, I'm still going to have to disagree. It was just a month ago that we were all arguing that we couldn't even get a 1st rd pick for Logan Mankins...now we're going to assume that Vollmer will currently net us a 1st rounder? To each his own, but I'm not in agreement with that thinking.

I just wanted to give a shout out and quick word of thanks to James Christensen - aka NePatriots - for taking time away from his own website (during a very busy time of year for him and his site) to fill in so much information about UDFA signings here at PatsFans.com

For those not familiar with it, here's a link to his site:

Re: Undrafted Free Agent Signings

Noel Devine: 5'8" 180
Danny Woodhead: 5'7" 200

Does this mean Devine won't be a good player?

Darren Sproles is 5'6" 190lbs.

Meanwhile Brandon Jacobs is 6'4" 260+lbs and he's injured more than Sproles.

Point is, Woody has proven that size doesn't matter if you're a good player.

Mankins wouldnt net a 1st because it would be a 1yr deal that they'd need to pay 10 million for.

As for Vollmer, I'd like to keep him around, maybe they'll offer him a new deal at the end of this season to keep him locked up for a while. As for the original point, I still think grabbing Yeatman makes a ton of sense.

Looks like Jake Kirkpatrick's the best avail. UDFA Center remaining.
Why am I not surprised that Bill didn't try to sign any of these guys?
