Young girls in Liberia are still being sexually exploited by aid workers and peacekeepers despite pledges to stamp out such abuse, Save the Children says.

Girls as young as eight are being forced to have sex in exchange for food by workers for local and international agencies, according to its report.
The agency says such abuse is continuing as people displaced by the civil war return to their villages.
The UN in Liberia said it would investigate specific allegations.
The United Nations promised to put safeguards in place after sexual abuse in the refugee camps of West Africa was first revealed four years ago.

But a study by Save the Children, which involved speaking to more than 300 people in camps for people displaced by the war, found that abuse was still widespread. The report said that all of the respondents clearly stated that more than half of the girls in their locations were affected.

The UN should be thrown out of America, it should be in France or Africa.
F-ck the United Nations, they HATE America.

Kofi Annan is a crooked little slimey weasle.

GW Bush didn't run to them kissing their ass, when someone attacks America, america runs to no one asking permission to "fight back"

The United Nations can "kiss my white ass"

I guess if we can blame the UN for sexual abuse in Liberia, we can blame the US for sexual abuse at Abu Ghraib. You hardly need to take such cheap shots with the UN, when there are more legitimate problems to fault them for.

Did you just compare the molestation of young girls in Liberia to what happened in Abu Ghraib?

    WOW!

The LIberals, they love that Abu Ghraib, they inject it into everything.

The Muslims we are at war with can show you what "real torture" is.

"Oh My God, I can't look, oh that poor dear man, oh the pain and suffering he must be going through, the filthy American animals put ladies underwear on his head"

"Hey, look at the little Muslim Terrorist's kids playing Soccer with that guys head"
    "Oh so what"

    Kerry/Gore LOST :bricks:

That makes sense. The sexual moestation of children is the same as the events of Abu Ghraib.
MORE LEGITIMATE PROBLEMS? LIKE WHAT? That's insulting to anyone who has little girls or cares about them. Or maybe you don't care about them because they're Liberian. What is your problem? I know there's not a lot of children in Cambridge, but you must have met one or two along the way.

C'mon Wistah, you know what I meant. It's a legitimate problem, but it no more reflects on the United Nations anymore than Abu Ghraib reflects on the U.S. or on American troops in general. I assume the UN has bad apples just as any large organization does, but the UN faces special challenges in that it also has to coordinate its activities with local agencies and organizations, which, according to the article, are part of the problem. The UN needs to do everything it can to stop this type of abuse, just as the US needs to everything it can to make sure things like Abu Ghraib don't happen again.

And, mgcolby, yes, I think child abuse and torture are fairly equal in their awfulness.

And any rate, it's good to see you guys criticizing the UN on this issue. As you know, the UN is the leading advocate in the world for children's rights. http://www.unicef.org/crc/ Without the UN, there would be even more victims of abuse. Without the Red Cross and Amnesty International, there would be even more victims of abuse, too.

Good point, compared to undies on the head and nudie pigpile photos, what's a widespread, continuing record of rape and sexual abuse of minors by UN soldiers in mant countries anyhow? Then again the 'Oil for Food' scandal predating the Iraq invasion was no small potatoes.

Just because there are bad apples in it, you cannot throw away the UN, because the idea behind it is just and moral.
You just have to make it work, make it better.

I remember seeing a show on TV on this subject about a year ago and thinking how inept the person in charge was.
During the interview, he sounded like he had his head buried in the sand.

With the same logic, just because we have GWB as a president, we should not be viewed as an ass backwards country, there are those of us who realize we the people are not represented by this administration. Same logic applies; work to make a difference, be part of the change, because America is a just and moral concept.

BTW, I find it nearly impossible to follow threads here. I'm using IE 6.0 running on Windows NT special edition and most of the time I do not get the little icons saying I have unread posts in a topic. Sometimes thee entire set of icons vanishes as I read one post. Impossible to keep with the flow.

The same level of excuses have been uttered for communism, 'a great idea just improperly implemented'. Meanwhile tens of millions died at the hands of ideologs.

The UN is a mess not worth fixing.

The same can be said of the Republican Party, which is plagued by corruption, incompetence, anti-constitutional activities, accusations of torture, reckless abuse of taxpayer dollars, but like the UN, the Republican Party is not responsible for the deaths of tens of millions (maybe tens of thousands, though).

Also, does anyone know the extent of the abuse by UN employees? Are there hundreds of cases or are we talking about isolated cases?

Lastly, Pissah, try reading a balanced piece on the oil for food scandal. It's not a UN scandal per se. To balance out the misinformation you and others try to foist, I'll post this link:

Of course Patters care more about what happens to adult males than children....................

And now he defends the oil for food scandal, sad when your choice of sexuality and ideology comes before helpless children, rather disgusting but not unexpected.

PFIEL, what do you propose be done to fight sexual abuse of children? In many places, the UN is the only organization powerful enough to champion the rights of children, and it does so through groups like UNICEF and WHO. The right-wing is chronically looking for issues with which to attack the UN, in the hope that the UN disappears and that children lose all protection. The right-wing doesn't care about kids. It doesn't generally support tax-payer funded programs to teach kids about their bodies and their rights. It doesn't support massive foreign aid to help kids in other countries. Most righties only care about kids if it costs nothing. Put up or shut up, PFIEL, what do you propose be done to help kids in third world countries? The UN, despite it's flaws, does far more good than harm.

    Utter leftist nonsense.
The UN has been plagued by systematic sexual exploitation of children in areas with the blue helmut force.

President Bush has actually implemented several very hard line stances that have curbed sexual expolitation of children througout the world.

First off, he made it a felony for an American citizen to go on a "sex tour" regardless of what country he goes to (it wasn't even a crime before). These people have had quite the rude awakening when they attempt to leave the US or upon their return. US citizens fuel all of this sex trade, it is very common in poor countries to "sell" one of your children for enough money to raise the others. I believe that there is a special place in hell for these people and look forward to arrainging there meeting with the devil.

Secondly he initialed "Operation Predator" which actively seeks out and finds both on-line and real life predators. This includes child porn and every single alien convicted of a sex crime against a minor is held without bond and deported.

Andrew Vaachs is a NY lawyer/author who tries to help these children. He also wrote a very good (Batman) book about the subject (I beleive it is called Batman: The ultimate Evil) it is a very good read and very informative about the sex trade. As sonmeone who has to deal with this stuff, I can tell you that it is the most disturbing thing I have ever seen, it keeps me up at night, and how I restrain myself when I finally arrest these guys is beyond me.

Did you just compare communism to the United Nations?

By the way, communism has never been implemented.
It is a Marxist target, something to shoot for, a utopia.
