In an upcoming book, Heraldo Muñoz, Chile’s ambassador to the United Nations, writes U.S. ‘threatened’ countries that didn’t support Iraq war.

Maybe this is naive of me, I'm really not sure, but isn't this the way diplomacy ALWAYS works? Its "you help me out on this or we're going to have problems down the road." I imagine this is the way deals are made all the time at the UN. Hey, look at Canada and NAFTA recently, they said if we get rid of NAFTA they're not selling us oil anymore. Does that mean we should say Canada "threatened" us, or Canada is making itself hated in the US? Of course not, they're bargaining with the chips they have, just like the US did at the UN.

Again, I don't know how it usually works, maybe I'm off base here.

Is it? Maybe you're right, but I was under the impression that this is how diplomacy worked. I mean, "threats of trade reprisals" is included in your quote there, that's exactly what Canada just did to us in the NAFTA example I gave! It just seems to me that when a country wants to get something done at the UN it will use whatever carrot (or stick) that it has available. Again though, maybe I'm totally wrong (wouldn't be the first time!).

You're correct, it's how diplomacy works.

Didn't we already assume this back in 2003?
Yes, we did assume this back in 2003.
It's what being an ally is all about ... it's like a marriage for good and for bad you are supposed to support your allies for the better of all allied.

Yeah, whenever I'm thinking of US foreign policy, I always ask myself, What Would Chile Do? Because they are so far advanced thinkers than we are.

That would make for a great t-shirt.

"WHAT WOULD CHILE DO" ... perhaps on the front.

Then maybe a dog taking a crap could be on the back? :p
