"September 2, Saturday

Roster cutdown to maximum of 53 players on Active/Inactive List by 4:00 pm EDT. Clubs may dress minimum of 42 and maximum of 45 players and third QB for each regular season and post-season game. "
This is the 1st time I've seen a ref to a 42 player minimum; if a team had 12 players down with flu they'd have to dress them (or forfeit???).

"September 8, Friday

All clubs are required to identify their 49 player Active List by 7:00 pm EDT on this Friday and each Friday thereafter for a regular season Sunday game. No later than one hour and 30 minutes prior to kickoff, clubs must identify their 45 player Active List and third QB, if any."
Never heard of the 49 player declaration before; thought the 8 inactives were announced 1.5 hrs before game.

I think Friday there have to be 4 inactives...and before the game...4 more.

They'd have to dress them, but that doesn't mean they have to play.

Haven't heard of that first 49 list either, although it could just fly under the radar because those 3 players are included in the 8-man inactive list a few days later.

Yeah.
But who ever knew?
Except Upshaw and braveht!

Did TAGLIABUE?
Did Belichick?

One more time for me people because I'm obtuse...

Why does the league have a rule that prevents all 53 players from being game eligible? Why not put the best possible product on the field in case of in game injury?

Cuz the hotdog venders can't feed all those players.

Possibly to limit the number of 'specialists' on a team. Think: 400lb guard who can't possible do anything else.

I am sure there is a good reason...I never totally understood it. I think the Pats pushed at one time to have a few of the inactives eligible for special teams only. In a blowout, what difference does it make?? I would think they should let all play...
