tough call. Yes what he said was offensive, and not true--on the other hand he puts his money where his mouth is, so to speak...donating around a hundred books a month.

He should apologize for nothing unless he wants to!
Book burning and censorship was real big in Nazi Germany and during Mao's Cultural Revolution.
    But we're different...we're America!:woohoo:

King is an idiot, no doubt. I understand that he's saying illiteracy limits your choices, but saying it like that belies his elitist leanings.

What do you mean by "elitist"? He may be wrong but....

He's right in the way that illiteracy limits people's options, as I said. It's also true that a disproportionate number of poorer people join the military because they don't have many options. But the way he put it was just elitist to me; he may not have meant it that way, but that's how it came off. I don't really care that he said it, nor do I think it should be censored. I'm fine with him being able to say any number of elitist things he wants. But I'm not a fan of the guy anyway and think he's a hack, so I'm biased.

But I do love the Stand and Shawshank though. Great stuff.

    #75 Jersey

Nobody is saying that King (or anyone else) does not have a right to "free speech". HOWEVER, if you call people dumb and stupid, they might not like you anymore, I know that it seems a little silly to you, but it is true.

Your speech is free, HOWEVER, you are not free from the wrath of those you insult with your free speech.

So basically you need to learn to read, or you'll end up a stupid fukc in the military. Nothing wrong with that. Afterall, serving your country is being stupid, or better yet, only stupid people serve their country.

    Sounds eerily similar.

I'm dumbfounded that people in this country don't understand what free speech means. You are free to say whatever it is you want (there are legal exceptions of course), just as people are free to respond accordingly. When someone in here says black people X, Illegals Y, angry white people Z, they are "freely" expressing their views. The flip side is the response of those who hear it. King can say whatever he wants to say, but he shouldn't get his panties in a bunch if some people voice their displeasure as a result.

Free speech is a principle as much as it is a consitutional right. This isn't people voicing their displeasure with him, it's someone deciding that he should be removed from other people's sight. If you don't want to buy his book, don't do it, but why take away someone else's option to read it?

Not to mention that I'm no Kerry fan, but he honestly did misspeak. The joke was supposed to be "if you don't study you'll get US stuck in Iraq" as a jab against Bush. The outcry against that was totally out of proportion and silly.

I see, I guess no one can ever read his books now.

Which would be really funny if his grades were higher than GWB's, but since part of his military record release included his transcripts...we know he was a C student, just like GWB.

And how have they taken away anyone's right (I didn't know it was a constitutional right to read King, btw) to read King's books? I think the last line or two of the story the guy even said, 'we're out of them right now, but if we had more we'd probably give them away' or something like that.

Well I didn't say it was a funny joke, and I'm no Kerry fan.

It's seems as though the left has moved the bar on the issue from "we support our troops but are against the war" to "it's ok to directly attack the credibilty of our troops in harm's way." I think its nice to at least get the truth out in the open.

I think that, because this is America, you actually can say anything you want. There's no law that says you have to love soldiers or respect them (yet). Would you want that?
