Thought there might be some folks on this board who could help answer this question.

According to the Herald, with last week's come from behind victory against the Ravens, Brady has now engineered "27 career game-winning drives to lead the Patriots to victory from a fourth-quarter deficit or tie."

John Elway I believe holds the record, but the way it's stated is slightly different with his Hall of Fame bio noting "Elway’s record 47 fourth quarter game-winning or game-tying drives."

Obviously a game tying drive is different than a game winning drive. Also I assume credit is given for bringing a team into field goal range when that's successful to win (or tie in the case of Elway)

So I'm trying to determine how many game winning or game tying drives Brady has. Presumably more than the 27 game winning drives noted in the Herald article.

Anyone want to help sort this out?

Anyone know how many Farve and Manning currently have?

Although I think Brady might have a shot at breaking Elway's record here, I'd be perfectly happy if the Pats went back to their running it up type ways and never gave him another opportunity!

    Manning

    http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=bio&player_id=8
has directed 28 regular-season fourth-quarter and overtime game-winning drives in which he has rallied team from a fourth-quarter deficit or tie to win…had three game-winning drives in 2006 (at NYJ 10/1, vs. Tennessee 10/8 and at Denver 10/29)…also directed 38-34 comeback win in AFC Championship Game 1/21/07 vs. New England…

    Favre
Owns 36 career fourth-quarter or overtime comebacks (which includes three postseason contests)

I believe that Favre added 3 more comebacks to his total this year.

    Hope that this helps.

That seems consistent with Brady's terminology - i.e. game winning drives.

I guess I'm trying to figure out if Elway's 47 is inflated when it is referred to as game winning or game tying drives.

Game tying drives are not game winning drives, hence there would likely be more of them.

It sounds like Elway's figures are all 4th quarter focused, with the question of 4th quarter ties obviously going to overtime.

At that point I think it's probably recognized that whoever wins the coin flip has an advantage - or at the very least the game is in the hands of the defense as much as the QB - so they count drives that force overtime as significant as actual wins.

So perhaps Brady's numbers go higher if one counts the times he's orchestrated a 4th down tie to force overtime, regardless of whether the team won or not.
