WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Promising "a new era of openness in our country," President Obama signed executive orders Wednesday relating to ethics guidelines for staff members of his administration.Transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency," Obama said.

Earlier in the day, Obama said he would issue a pay freeze for his senior staff members. Obama also moved fast to address a campaign promise to close the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention facility.

The administration is drafting executive orders calling for the closure of the detention facility, according to two administration officials.

"I asked the military leadership to engage in additional planning necessary to execute a responsible military drawdown from Iraq," he said in a statement.

A step in the right direction - this is the people's government after all. I do wish the restrictions on lobbyists were tighter, however. Lobbying is a nice word for institutional bribery.

    #37 Jersey

Neither party will go for that. How do you think their reelection campaigns get financed?

I like his premise of transparency being a #1 priority, especially post Bush/Cheney. One of the major losses this country sustained during the last 8 years is the loss of public trust, and if someone can take steps to gradually begin to at least TRY to correct that we'll all be better off.

It'll feel nice to be more informed :)

What the hell is this Liberal Loony OBSESSION with Gitmo, the hell with Gitmo who gives a sh!t about those bastards, they hate us, PUT THE PEOPLE BACK TO WORK, STOP THE FORCLOSURES, go after the Crooked CEO's, start the God Damn Change that the Obama Groupies are always yelling about.

The American family that's watching all their furniture being put out on the sidewalk and watching the Repo Man drive away in their car are more important than those bastards in Gitmo.

Fornicate Gitmo (i'm not allowed to use the "f" word)

Gitmo-maybe closing Gitmo is one more way Obama can quickly remove himself from ownership of that whole inherited legacy of torture,murder,etc-maybe Gitmo's symbolic in that regard. Anyway,it's not as if Gitmo's consuming all the President's time:cool: My guess is they're all pretty good at multi-tasking:rolleyes:

You forgot the other major priority of any administration during an economic crisis and 2 wars:

    Gays in the Military.

Once possible result of making government information more publicly available is that it exposes Bush's policies (possible crimes?) without the current administration having to investigate which is 1) expensive, 2) time-consuming, 3) not the highest priority amidst the mess, and 4) not necessarily politically expedient. Kill 2 birds with 1 stone, though it throws a lot of work to the courts.
