So the charges to the Pats would be ~$4.7M, $6.2M, $6.5M, $7.1M?

I'm not saying it'll happen, but it's not unpalatable, certainly not for the first two years--if Clements is still worth the money.

Oops...I got my threads mixed up...that's the Larry Johnson contract.

Here's Clements's

3/2/2007: Signed an eight-year, $80 million contract. The deal contains $22.6 million guaranteed, including an initial roster bonus of $11 million, a second-year $10 million roster bonus, and annual $500,000 workout bonuses. With a voidable year in 2014, it is essentially for seven seasons and $64.02 million. 2009: $3,516,666, 2010: $6 million, 2011: $7.25 million, 2012: $9 million, 2013: $10.77 million, 2014: $15.48 million (Voided Year), 2015: Free Agent. Cap charges: $5.68 million (2009), $8.17 million (2010), $9.42 million (2011), $11.17 million (2012), $12.94 million (2013).

Again, the first three years don't look terrible, although I don't think I'd touch the last two with a ten-foot pole. That said, I don't know how palatable trading Clements would be for SF, seeing as they'd have to absorb all the dead money this year.

We traded a second round pick for Corey Dillon.
We traded a forth round pick for Randy Moss.

It's really not the same as trading two good players on their rookie contracts to get two guys closer to the end of their career than the beginning, one of whom is an immature flake.

If Pioli wants to trade us Gonzo for a third rounder, fine. It's hard, though, to get younger as a team by trading young players who take up little cap room for old ones that take up a lot of cap room.

And frankly, I'm not convinced Larry Johnson is any better than Maroney. Notice his numbers went way down after the all-world offensive line in KC disintegrated.

I am of the school that believes that Maroney and Thomas are both flops at this point and you cannot use injury as an excuse. Then they have poor training habits.

I would not call them "good" at all. Fair maybe. JAG maybe. You would not swap Thomas even for Gonzo? I know you wouldn't trade Maroney for LJ, but I would CAP not involved in the decision. LT could not run with the Chiefs line last year. Lets be realistic.

This was a combo platter, that brought us the K.C. #3 pick to exploit for bigger gains, get their number 35 in the second round and wind up with an instant upgrade to our offense with Gonzo and LJ TBD. If not trade LJ for a pick.
Maroney and Thomas are in their last rookie contract year. We keep em or lose em this year. They have teased us but have shown nothing. Nyet!

Pioloi gets Cassel and keeps a first rounder for OL draft help. Remember he has plenty of FA money too. He had to make a decision on TG and LJ.

All of this is just talk but is interesting.

Jeff,I already suggested that one this week and got roasted by the "extremely serious" Hitler youth on this site. I was a little different than you. I said swap first rounds (this way Pioli gets to keep a first rounder and still gets Cassel), pick up K.C.'s second round number 35 pick, and get Gonzales and LJ for Cassel, Maroney and Dave Thomas to start for the Chiefs at TE.

LJ wants out and is still a premier back when healthy and only 29 (I asked but was not granted the "Dillon Clause"), TG has a three year contract that is CAP decent, wants a ring and some say he is washed up with 96 catches. I like washed up TEs with 96 catches.

Maroney is from that area,. It gives Pioli three of his former draft choices as a offensive base and he still gets rid of the LJ issue and keeps a first rounder.
Worse case scenario is we swap LJ for picks. What if he lights it up as our primary back though?

The #35 pick is intriguing and you know BB will swap out of #3 even if it is a 2010 extra choice.

I like your thinking. I say why not? I know Randy Moss was way too old and a evil person. We get one old one and one evil one here. I say we use the "Dillon Clause" on LJ and get a Fountain Of Youth for TG.

DW,

Gonzalez is an TE who caught 96 passes with KC.
How many do you think he would catch with the Pats?

Remember that he would have a better QB throwing him the ball, but now he would be in competition with
a) the best deep WR currently in the League,
b) the best slot receiver in the League;
c) and the best pass receiving RB in the League.

Two of whom run routes mostly in TE territory. Among them they have about 200 catches. The rest of the team amassed around only 70-75 catches. The Pats were the #4 ranked; and best balanced run/pass ratio, top-ranked, Offense.

There just are not that many passes to go around. :)

Thoms is in his contract year, but, as a first-rounder, Maroney is signed through 2010.

I cosign on the "not enough passes" theory, BTW.

Hey there Dryheat, happy new year! With the BB/SP connection, I would think we may make things as amicable as possible. I say BB is down on Maroney after the effort/injury this year, ditto Thomas(though it was DJ Toys who included him). Getting a 2nd(instead of a 1st)for Cassel would save face for KC, TG is worth a 2nd-3rd, we take LJ as a "problem child"(I think he is more of a north-south runner BB likes)and his cap $$, Huard is a vet QB to replace Cassel and after the Chad Jackson dumping I am not inclined to keep around "bargains" either. What LJ showed at the end of the year told me he has plenty left in the tank if both allowed to run and properly motivated....something this team can do like no other.
