If I calculating this right, as of now the Patriots should have 8 picks in the 2011 draft
    Round #1 Oakland's pick-Seymour trade
    Round #1 NE's pick
Round #2 Carolina's pick draft day trade
    Round #2 NE's pick
    Round #3 NE's pick
Round #4 Denver's pick -Maroney trade
    Round #4 NE's pick
    Round #5 NE's Pick
Round #6 N.O.'s pick -David Thomas trade
Round #6----> traded to Denver for Maroney
    Round #7 NE's pick
Compensatory pick- one likely for losing Watson/Jarvis Green offset by signing Crumpler
    -------------------
Undisclosed/Conditional pick to Atlanta in Ojinnaka trade,
Conditional to Philly for Tracy White
Undisclosed pick to KC for Jarrad Page trade

That's a total of 12 picks with three of them going to Den, Philly,KC and Atlanta for a net of 8 picks, without even considering a possible trade of Mankins.
As for the compensatory, I'm guessing it will be a 5th. Green signed a 4yr $20 million contract which would have been a 5th this year. Watson's 3yr $12 million contract was worth a 6th this year but it will be offset by Crumpler's 2 yr $4.8 million as per adamjt13's blog.

i never got that offset pick thiing. Watsons contract is clearly larger than crumpler's yet they offset each other?

Geez hope we get that 5th for green. Specially because he got cut so we are basically getting a pick for free

A player who's cut in the preseason by the new team he signs with doesn't count as a quality free agent lost. :(

On the flip side, the pick for Tracy White is a conditional pick in 2012, not 2011.

lots of early picks. the team is looking so good, and so young, after the Bengles game, it's hard to imagine them getting any younger. But RB is a need for youth. DL, OLB, OG could use help... and if Light leaves in free agency, OT too. Plus a deep threat to replace Moss at WR.

To think we got Hernandez in the 4th, Spikes in the 2nd, Tate in the 3rd. Give BB seven more young players of that caliber?!? Incredible.

Only problem will come in 4 and 5 years, when all these guys hit their free agency, and we'll be able to keep... like... three of them, and watch the rest sign deals with Denver and Cleveland.

So, does anyone know when we'll find out exactly what the undisclosed comp. will be, for Ojinnaka and Page? Is it performance based?

What happens with Mankins (and how Connolly goes all year) may influence what we do but I would guess we need a RG and RT to replace Neal and Light and would see 2 of those top 6 picks there.

The other real need is OLB and be interesting to see people's projections and fits as we head into next year

Moss too will be interesting as we could target Green or Jones depending on that Raiders pick

Hah!! Yes, it IS a concern...

However, if we're able to run 3, 4, or 5 consecutive Super Bowl Victories back to back to back to back to back...I reckon we'll overcome our sense of loss!! :D

2011 Draft picks updated after Moss trade. It's likely 10 or 11 picks depending whether the conditions of the Ojinnaka trade were met.
    Round #1 Oakland's pick-Seymour trade
    Round #1 NE's pick
Round #2 Carolina's pick draft day trade
    Round #2 NE's pick
Round #3 Minn's pick-- Moss trade
    Round #3 NE's pick
Round #4 Denver's pick -Maroney trade
    Round #4 NE's pick
    Round #5 NE's Pick
Round #6 N.O.'s pick -David Thomas trade
Round #6----> traded to Denver for Maroney
    Round #7 NE's pick
Compensatory pick- one likely for losing Watson/Jarvis Green offset by signing Crumpler

Undisclosed/Conditional pick to Atlanta in Ojinnaka trade,

Undisclosed pick to KC for Jarrad Page trade

The pick for Ojinnaka was the Pats' 7.

Was it conditional (i.e. being on the roster for x number of games or just being on the 53 man roster at the end of camp)and were the conditions met???
Also with the Pats sending Minn the 2012 7th rounder in the Moss deal, what do we make of the 2012 pick that was sent for Tracy White that was supposedly a 7th rounder???

We can't possibly be thinking of going into the draft with 8 picks in the top 4 rounds, could we?

We wouldn't/couldn't sign all of them. Seriously, something else MUST be afoot here. BB has to have some other trade in the works. I know he love his picks and all, but this is ridiculous. I know Buffalo might be looking to unload an Evans, or perhaps even throw in Mankins and a high pick for a team looking to unload a stud gobbling too much $$.

I don't get it.... There must me more.

    From what I've read, it was a straight-up 7.

Not worth trying to figure out ATM. :) :(

I agree there's no way they enter the draft with 8 picks in the first 4 rounds, likely trade at least one into 2012 and couple a few to move up ( obviously) or for a player. It's nice to be holding essentially two hands of cards....Whether they make the moves now or wait until April...who knows??

    In that case, it's

Why not, how many openings do you see on the roster next year?

I could easily see 8 rookies make next year's team:

    2 running backs ( 1 1st/2nd down back-up and 1 3rd down back)
    1 Interior Lineman
    1 LT
    1 Potential #1 WR
1 TE (Who knows how long Crumpler will last)

    1 3-4 DE to push G.Warren/Wright
    1 3-4 ROLB conversion project
1 3-4 OLB conversion project as swing OLB back-up (similar to what the Steelers did this year in picking both Worilds (2nd) and Gibson (4th))
Assorted other BPAs, but right there are nine clearly identifiable needs or developmental niches where rookies should be able to push to stick.

My preference by round and position would be this:
    1st 3-4 DE and Oline
    2nd ROLB Conversion Project, WR
    3rd RB, other Oline
4th OLB Conversion project #2 and BPA

This seems pretty sane to me.

The OLB count might depend on how far Cunningham comes along this season (or even Crable/Ninkovich). If Cunningham emerges as a solid #1, maybe the second OLB get pushed into a later round.

O-line in the 1st round would have to be either an elite LT (assuming that Vollmer stays at RT) or an "instant starter" OC. If the plan is to move Vollmer to LT, a good RT can be had in the 2nd or 3rd. If Koppen plays out his contract (thru 2011), you might get a sufficient replacement in the 3rd or even the 4th.

Depending on how Butler/Meriweather work out this season, maybe you add a CB or coverage safety.

    #95 Jersey

    1a. DE
    1b. OLB
    2a. RB
    2b. OG/OT

after that it's a crap shoot. I think we need to address all those positions, and after that we pick BPA.
