Interesting, Colts will play those top five teams six times next season. Wonder how Manning will fare?

I guess I wouldn't list Colts any higher either. By default, you lose both starters, you have to put them at the bottom.

Did they really spell it Samuels?

    :)

Samuel has been playing consistently well for a while now, though it wasn't until last year he really broke out.

Not sure if this is subjective or statistical ranking. And it is TSN. But remember he's being ranked as part of a supposedly top 4 unit on a defense that overall likely would rank in the top 2-3 and this is AFC ranking not NFL.

Asomugha may be physically talented, but last season was the 1st of his 4 year career in which he recorded an INT. He has never made a big play in a big game, because Oakland's never been in any. I would wait before elevating him to elite status. Give it time to breathe a little. Among Cbs on bad teams, Leigh Bodden is not as physically gifted, but has a longer track record.

Crap list. McAlister is a piece of junk, Nnamdi isn't better than Samuel yet either. Champ should be numbers 1 through 5, it's not even close.

Actually after a half a good year...anyone who says that his play in the first of the season was just as good is missing it...How many people would have franchised him after 8 games??

Ok, here is the NFC's list.

    1. Nate Clements, 49ers
    2. DeAngelo Hall, Falcons
    3.Ronde Barber, Bucs
    4. Lito Sheppard, Eagles
    5.Antoine Winfield., Vikes

Where would Asante fit on the combined list?

    Top NFC units;

    1. 49ers
    2. Cowboys
    3.Eagles
    4.Packers
    5.Bucs

Also notice on the AFC list, Ty Law is no longer in the top 5.

McAlister isnt junk..big part of the Ravens D

Nnamdi has been playing spectacular for 2 years straight. He didnt record and INT the year before but had 8 this year and if u watch him..you see how good he is. Hes a big part of why Raiders pass D was #1 i think

what do u mean "not better yet" ? you act like Samuel has been shutdown for more than half a season.

not bashing Samuel..i defend him when talking about CBs but Asamougha is a very good player

Deangelo Hall is not anywhere near a top 5 CB in the NFC. He has top 5 talent and runs his mouth like he is Deion Sanders. The turth is he was embarassed week after week last season.

They probably look at it as they are part of a defensive unit which, as a whole, is very talented. They likely figure that this cb unit will be good based on what is around it.

Agreed. I know some here hate to hear it, but the kid can play. He's steadily gotten better since his rookie year.

How is SF #1? Granted, they have upgraded their unit with Clements, but some say Michael Lewis has some coverage issues. In fact, that is the exact reason he was benched by the Eagles last season. In my opinion, the Bears should be at the top of the list. Tillman, Vasher and Manning Jr. are a lot better than Clements, Harris and Spencer (when healthy). Is it just me or is Nate Clements an overrated player. Maybe I just think that because when ever the Pats play the Bills, Clements struggles.

People rag on the Pats CBs all the time but last year the gave up only 10 passing TDs which is just remarkable. The also played great against the top 2 receivers of the Colts in the AFC Championship.

I rate Samuel as top 6-12 in the NFL, there are a lot of players who are about the same. I nudge Samuel up a few notches because he understands and excels in our scheme, is young (26 next season) and is getting better.

My biggest beef with the Pats secondary is the lack of depth. If Samuel or Hobbs miss games there is a dramatic dropoff to the Scott, James and Gay's of the world.

Random note I added after the original post - Samuel's 2006 season was among the all-time best, he had 10 picks during the regular season and 2 picks of TDs in the playoffs.

Well it's based on the fact that the Patriots only gave up like 10 passing TD's last season.

Nate Clements is SO overrated, and I'm not just saying this because I am a Bills fan

A guy who labels himself as "playmaker" (which hung above his locker in Buffalo) should have more then 5 ints in the last 2 seasons

I would disagree with a few names on this list, especially Hutchinson, Bullock, and Polumalu. Hutchinson is a top 3 guard IMO. His presence alone improved Minnesota's run offense this season. Bullock is always around the ball and gives 100% every play, along with his great athleticism and strength. As much as I hate the Steelers, one guy that would look good in a Pats uniform is Polumalu. He may have had an off year, but the guy has skills.

Ditto for the Colts. Only gave up 15 passing td's all regular season. Surprising, but with a run D that porous, why pass?

They DID give up 3 doughnuts in a row to NE,BUFF,and Dallas! Also shut down Cincy and Palmer.

I wonder if they will miss Harper and David?

It is a good question. They run a well designed defense, it essentially double covers the outside recievers and protects the CBs. Also their defense can make it hard to throw against, on most plays 7 guys are in coverage. They also proved that if they stack the box it is difficult to run effectively (see KC playoff game). The trick is to make them pay for stacking the box or to pound it down their throat. It will be interesting to see what adjustments they make to their defense to slow down opponents running attack.

The weakness is with so many undersized players they give up a lot of yardage on the ground. Unfortunately the Patriots running game vanished. Many different items were in play including Maroney's injury, Faulk's injury, Dillion's age, onconsistent O Line play, lack of respect for the passing game.

In still bugs me that on that 3rd and 4 they didn't even have a threat of running the ball (personally I would have ran it to force Indy to use their final timeout, even if the Pats were stopped in would have setup a 4th and short to win the game).

Back to the topic, the Pats CBs are asked to do a lot more than other defenses. Some may rate Samuel at 5, others at 15 but there are other intangibles in play:
    - he know the system
    - he excels in the system
    - he is getting better every year
    - he is young (only 26)
    - he is better than 90% of the CBs in the league

Would of, could of , should have.... teams like Philly and SD are good are proactively signing players before they hit free agency. The risk is an injury or trail off in production but the upside is relatively cheap cap hits for expensive positions. A couple years ago the Eagles locked up Shepperd and Brown years before their contarcts expired. When it happened I thought it was a smart move, they locked up 2 young staring CBs for cheap money (3-4 per year if I remember). I was hoping for a similar deal for Branch and Samuel, the two biggest pending FAs but it never happened.

I hope Samuel is locked up, or worst case plays the year under the tag. If he sits out or is traded corner becomes weakness of the defense.

    That's pretty surprising, isn't it?

I think that speaks more to lack of great cornerbacks than Asante's greatness...

The guys had one - count 'em - one, outstanding season.

I know what you mean, I look at the top five list and want to say that Asante does not belong, but in order to do that, I have to come up with someone I would put ahead of him and I am having trouble with that right now.
