I'm at work. How badly did BB get hammered by the commentators for 4th and 2?

Going for it on 4th & 13 in SB42 was pretty gutsy.

It's only gutsy if you convert. It's idiotic if you don't.

    My Jersey:

kinda balanced. most people said gutsy and that him having a SB ring made him safe to make the call. one guy called it the worst call in the history of the game. Theisman says thats how BB always coaches and takes chances.

So, wait. Patriots go for 16-0, get it; Colts don't; both teams lose in the Super Bowl. But the Colts made a gutsy call?

(Just saw the summary intro on NFLN and that's basically what they're saying, that the Colts decided to go for the SB rather than the perfect season. Cheap. Well, maybe going for the perfect season will rate higher; we'll see).

I guess we could do our Gutsiest Calls of the Belichick Era. I'll start with the safety v Broncos. Plus, you know, Brady over Bledsoe.

it wasnt even mentioned in the best of the rest. as i said a strange list. they had the cowboys trading herschel walker ass #9. go figure.
#1 was icebowl, lombardi calling QB sneak to win the game vs kick the FG and play for overtime.

I haven't seen the show to hear how they framed this argument, but isn't intentionally losing a game the opposite of a gutsy call?

Controversial? Sure, but when I hear "gutsy" I think about a team/player/coach taking a risk or doing something bold. Losing on purpose doesn't really fit that criteria.

That is one of the most gut-less calls I've seen. How can anyone argue otherwise? The players themselves were publicly upset at Polian and Caldwell for sandbagging their run at perfection. It didn't even make any sense. I can understand benching your starters to prevent injuries, but this was a game they already had in the pocket, late in the third quarter, and that they blew on purpose to avoid any kind of pressure.

Where was Sean Payton's onside kick call? That is the only one I can think of that deserves top-10 of all-time. It took balls.

Other calls I can think of:

Belichick game plans Giants vs. Bills: they will win if Thurman Thomas rushes for 100 yards. Awesome.

Coughlin AND Belichick deserve a mention for the 2007 finale, in which both teams duked it out instead of resting players, despite no playoff implications.

NO, that has to be Barry Switzer going for it on 4th and 1 on his own 29 late in the game, tied at 17. They don't make it but the play gets waived off by the 2 minute warning. Goes for it again and don't make it and lose the game. They weren't facing a dominant team that could score at will but a Randall Cunningham led Eagles team....

The game in Denver where BB allowed the safety should be at the top of that list,or its a lame list. How many coaches would or could do that???

Looking at clips from that game on Youtube, BB sure used to be a lot more animated and enthusiastic on the sideline, instead of the dour statue he's become lately. :p

    Maybe it's just age. :bricks:

When I read the thread title, the safety in Denver in 2003 was the first thing I thought of.

i think it was a vary smart move. not exactly putting the game on the line move. the pats were already down and punting from their own endzone.either way the broncos were going to get a chance to run the clock out. what other alternatives did he have iam not sure but they were down anyway and a long way away from scoring.
i think last week or the 1st week 1 team pulled the same move , bills vs miami i think and failed .

3 of the gustiest calls in NFL history happened last year so to me this list was put together by a bunch of interns at the NFLN. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they discussed playing it safe was a decision that held more risk and took more balls then 50+ years of decisions that happen on the field every Sunday.
