Are the Patriots throwing out of this formation too much?

We saw last year when wind and bad weather affected their game plans of throw throw throw.

Sure the Pats can morph week by week, but if you don't run consistently how can you really get better at it week by week in real live game situations?

I enjoyed watching Ben Jarvis Green Ellis run and am kind of disappointed he's fallen by the waste side.

The positives of the shotgun is that it neutralizes a teams run defense and takes off some of their better nosetackles.

but could this set us up for a bad day if it is extremely windy?

not to mention if teams don't respect the run they will tee off on the pass. I do however like seeing them run the draw out of the shotgun.

I'd like to see a few more runs especially on those end of the game drives to seal the deal.

I think part of the problem is that the run game isn't great right now, for whatever reason. So you play to your strength, which is our passing game. When the Jets took away the pass last year and we won with Maroney, it was a tight game and we won partly due to some excellent special teams. The passing game is giving us room to breathe.

I also wonder if the Pats run better against 4-3 teams and struggle against 3-4 team so they decide to go shotgun against 3-4 teams and take away some of these good nosetackles.

I think they could mix it up a little more, but I think the results overall are extremely positive in the shotgun. It has definitely helped Faulk in the running game. It seems every time they run the draw from the shotgun these days, the Pats are gaining 7 plus yards. I don't think the wind is a factor if the Pats stay to more of a shorter passing game. The wind only really affects the game with longer passes where there is more touch than velocity.

Nobody runs against the steelers, short controlled passing game in adverse condtions will serve as out "run" game and is usually quite effective.

This team has the two longest winning streaks in NFL history. It is the only team to ever go 16-0 in a regular season, it's a fluke helmet catch away from having the only 19-0 season in NFL history, it set a record for points in a season last year and we're asking about it being too reliant on the shotgun?

I think Dan Deodorf made a good point last week (possibly his first). He said why can't teams use the pass to set up the run? That is what the Pats seem to do very well. I think the Pats best chance to run the ball may be spread out the defense by staying in the shotgun with three or four wides and handing off to Faulk. It worked perfectly against the Dolphins.

Part of it may also have to do with allowing Cassel to read the defense better.

They should stick with their bread & butter, and change it up only if the gameplan really dictates it must be. Otherwise, I like how they're playing on Offense. And like fgssand said, Faulk serves as a pretty good balance to keep the defense on it's toes with those little draw-rushes. :D

We will run the ball more often. In the past two weeks we've seen a barrage of the shotgun because we were attacking the two teams' weakness (the Dolphins and Jets weaknesses are in the defensive secondary) and it worked out for us. I expect we'll still see a lot of the shotgun this week but not as much as the past two weeks as the Steelers have a stellar secondary.

that was the question...so either participate in the discussion or STFU and quit posting stupidity. This is not last years team...in fact this is a totally different team as we have our back up QB in (playing well), and our running game consists of our third down back and an undrafted guy.

Tell you what. Go back and watch the last two games, then get back to me. I thought the O.P. was silly, but your post took things to new depths.

gee thanks. I think it's a legit topic.

Look at the SD game last year. They ran the ball effectively. In the SB they ran about 10 times or so, maybe even less. and we wonder why Brady was beat up.

You're right. We should have ran the ball more in the Super Bowl. I would have loved to see even more three and outs. Did not notice the Giants completely stuffing the run?

They lost Neal. We saw at the beginning of this season that Neal makes an enormous difference in this team's line. Furthermore, the only game the team lost all last season was played in a comparatively 'perfect' environment, in a warm weather location for the Super Bowl.

Wow, thread-cr*p much? If a guy asks a question why is it so for so many posters on this board to simply try to answer that question in a productive and informative manner?

yeah run the ball three times and it gets stuffed so stop trying.

nice logic. try something a few times and give up.

    glad you're not the coach.

genius. that explains why they can't run left? but i guess neal was the straw that broke the camels back.

the funny thing is that three weeks from now people are going to be yelling at too much shotgun. or maybe even today
