  2. Only 34 years old????

    Interesting choice...

I thought Grimm would have it.

They wanted new blood apparently. There's not very many who've taken over for a legend and succeeded so I can't blame them.

Three black coaches in the AFC North now.

"Tomlin will become only the third Steelers head coach in 38 years and the NFL's sixth African-American head coach."

Sounds like this guy fulfills several goals - the Rooney Rule, likely extremely inexpensive, and perhaps they decided a complacent team and QB who got a little too comfortable with his franchise status needed a kick in the pants.

Will be interesting to see if Grimm now gets cut loose or asks to be. There is demand for 3-4 DC's and he and Wisenhut had an agreement to stay if each other got the HC slot.

Could be back to back tough seasons for an aging Steelers core and some of their name players like Porter (who has been *****ing for a year about getting his $$$) and Polamalu (who is a FA after 2007) and even Ben (who is entering his 4th year of a 6 year $22M rookie deal with incentives he's probably long blown due to his propensity for accidental injury) all looking for big seasons and new deals and having to transition to an all new staff and approach.

Get the feeling that the Rooney's are happy to get one for a digit every couple of decades?

    Tomlin denies report

Steelers | Tomlin denies being hired

Updating a previous item, reports Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin has denied a report that he has been hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers as their next head coach. Tomlin told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that no decision has been made. "It is untrue. I have no idea where it's coming from. I have not talked to the Rooneys today," Tomlin said. Sources told's John Clayton the report was incorrect, and the team is not expected to make a decision Saturday, Jan. 20.

You would think that more 3-4 players would be available for the Pats, except when you look at how the Steelers draft. They have been simply brilliant at drafting late round LBs to run their system. They get many of those star players in the 5th or 6th rounds, from what I remember. As far as D-Linemen, we are pretty filled at that position for the near future. As far as DBs, the Steelers draft either far higher than we ever would, like 1st round for their safety, or they tend to have guys that aren't that good (see everyone else in the backfield).

We also draft from different schools, with Belichick favoring the South. So while there would in theory be a couple extra 3-4 players in the draft, we haven't seemed to draft the same type players as the Steelers in a long time now, which is a shame when it comes to linebackers......

Anyway, just my two cents worth. I really admire the way they have drafted at LB over the years.

Anyway, the 3-4 is the new fad right now amoung a lot of teams.

Grimm is the Oline coach. I think you have him confused with Dick Lebeau. Lebeau ain't going anywhere at 70 years old and it would be a monumental rookie mistake for Tomlin to squeeze him out as DC.

How so? Tomlin is this year's Mangini, he is clearly on the NFL coaching fast track. Hiring outside the org, when Grimm would have provided continuity and familiarity, is pretty much an indictment of the staff and players that 8-8 after a super bowl was not good enough.

Sounds like someone at SI had a very livid dream last night and wrote a report while sleep walking.

While it doesn't make sense that Tomlin would be choosen based on his Tampa 2 experience and the mediocre performance of his unit, I think the Steelers might be/are considering him because he obviously dislikes giving up running yards, and that's the franchise's MO.

What is taking Pittsburgh so long anyway? I find it hard to believe they didn't have contingency plans in place in case Cowher left.

Well the reporter didn't back down, and now Chris Mortensen of ESPN is reporting that the Tomlin hire will be announced soon. They are probably talking contract now.

The Rooneys do business at a very deliberate pace. They lost Whisenhunt becuase of it. That said, neither Tomlin nor Grimm were going anywhere, and they were waiting for Chicago to lose so they could do a 2nd interview with Ron Rivera. Tomlin was the best possible choice of those three anyway.
