Who do you think is better as a starting QB,at least RIGHT NOW? - Tom at this point in his career? or Joe in the 80s and early 90s covering his whole career?

While this is a Patriots fan site I am sure we are one sided here but put away the home boy love for a minute and explain why you think Tom is better than Joe as an overall NFL QB

IMO Joe Montana is the best ever and Brady is a hair below right now,not saying he won't become the best when all is said and done but I think Brady is 2nd best ever at this point, another SB or two win by Brady and his team and he will take the reigns.

I don't think you can compare eras ... but for what it's worth there were less restrictions on hitting the QB and it was easier to manhandle receivers then. They both were great ... Montana would have adapted to this era and Brady to that era with ease.

I have little doubts Brady will win another SB but will he get #5

If they win #4 this year then 5 becomes much more attainable

Without checking I am not sure the age when Joe won his 4th title.

There are a lot of fans in here using the term Brady G.O.A.T. so in that regards I can't put him on that level...yet...getting to look like its possible, but not yet.

Before this gets too far I want to mention a couple of things most can agree on:

    1. Brady has played in an era with more complex defenses/game planning

    2. Brady never had a WR of the caliber of Jerry Rice for the majority of his career

    3. If it wasn't for the craziest catch (by a helmet) in NFL history and/or if the refs called the play dead like they should have (a la Pittsburgh game), TB would already have #4 and the mainstream media would be more receptive to this debate because it's a lot closer than people want to admit.

Skip Bayless, who likes Brady, always says TB did his part in that superbowl. He led them to the potential game winning drive. But the D just had a collapse of epic proportions.

This thread was started because I am seeing an increasing amount of people in here using the term Brady is GOAT and want to know how they come to this conclusion other than justifying it by being a Patriots fan and using an biased reason for it.

Montana was 33 when the Niners won SB24. Brady is now 33.

I'm too young to have seen Montana play. He was off to KC before I started watchin football.

But what I do know is I can't imagine anyone playing any better than TFB is right now. Like someone said in a thread a few weeks back he's like a robot. His mechanics are flawless, his pocket presence, his play action fake is much better than it has been the last few years, right up there with what it was when he came into the league. His sneaks, his reading the D and changing protection/audibling. His leadership... I could go on and on.

We are truly lucky football fans to get to watch this guy play.

I made a Brady/Montana comparison thread at the beginning of the 2009 season. Since ending, another year has been added to the comparison.

2009 was Brady's tenth season in the NFL, compared to Montana's first 10 seasons...

    TDs
    Brady: 225
    Montana: 159

    INTs
    Brady: 102
    Montana: 99

    Yards
    Brady: 30,844
    Montana: 27,533

    NFL MVP
    Brady: 1
    Montana: 0

    Super Bowl Championships
    Brady: 3
    Montana: 3

    Conference Championships
    Brady: 4
    Montana: 3

    Playoff Record
    Brady: 14-4
    Montana: 10-4

This does not include any statistics from the currently in-progress 2010 season, which certainly looks to boost Brady's résumé.

Montana is the best I've ever seen. Being 48 years old, and watching football for 43 of those years, he's the best I've ever seen. Montana against the Broncos in SB 24, is the greatest display of perfect QB play I've ever seen. That being said, Brady is playing in the Free Agency era, and has played with tons of different WR's, only one a Hall of Fame receiver, albeit, a HOF'er with questionable on the field work ethic. Rice busted his ass on every down. I don't know, it's a tough call. Brady seems to play better with a cast of non superstar receivers, while Montana got better once Rice arrived. Tough call, but Montana was a ruthless killer in SB's, Is #1 in every SB stat, and never lost a SB or even threw a pick in a SB. Brady was awesome in SB's too, driving his team in late go ahead drives in 3 of his 4 SB's. Montana has the edge in SB's, Brady has the edge in regular season play. Not sure if Montana ever led the NFL in yardage or TD passes. Brady has led the league in TD's twice and yardage once. Tough call, but I give the edge to Montana. Maybe 1 and 2 QB's of all time.

I never came close to making that implication. The question was to compare Brady and Montana. No where until your post was Bradshaw even mentioned in the thread. Are you purposefully antagonistic?

    It matters not.

Nobody and I mean NOBODY has seen anything like Brady's performances this decade in recent times. That should be enough. Enjoy it now. It will end sooner than you think. Folks who have children and seen them grow up know this well.

    No Jersey Selected

Montana had Rice to work with for much of his career. Brady had Randy Moss to work with for only two years. What Brady has done in this era is more impressive than what Montana did in his day. Both are top notch quarterbacks and legends in NFL lore, but I'll take Brady over Montana any day.

If you're evaluating the greatness of players by the Super Bowl records, then Bradshaw = Montana. You chose the parameters. I responded with a question to see if you were being consistent. That's all.
