Time to switch off WEEI

Here's a novel idea: why don't you go spend your time on a Bankofamericasox message board (we even have one here at Patsfans) and leave the off-season football talk to us. The OP and others make a good point. Baseball talk is overemphasized on WEEI because it carries Bankofamericasox games and needs to push advertising concurrently. The Hub is a more balanced station.

I didn't bring it up. I don't talk baseball here because it's not a Red Sox forum. THIS isn't off season football talk, it's offseason whining about media coverage. I'm sorry, if you can't handle that one of the stations in town is spending significant resources covering a local team when they're preseason favorites, right before the season starts, than you probably need a new outlet.

Talking about the Red Sox over the Patriots in late February is hardly some crime against humanity that some of you whiner posters are making it out to be.

But HERE'S an idea, if you don't like it, tune out and don't listen. You won't do that Tunescribe, you'll whine like you do every other year.

I understand the OP and TunaScribe's comments completely.

I would VERY much like to have an all-football radio station. I may end up having to go the Sirius Radio route, just to get that.

Fact of the matter is that baseball, basketball and hockey bore the living crap out of me. I have less than zero interest in watching them, hearing about them, reading about them, or even hearing someone else talk about them.

Football is literally the ONLY sport I care about, and that is why having focus shift on air to other sports is frustrating.

But, it is what it is, so I guess it's back to my PFW fixes and looking at Sirius.

Thank goodness I can at least get the NFL channel.

Fact of the matter is both stations serve their masters. 98.5 is doing tons of hockey eventhough it is the fourth most popular sport in town. WEEI is the Red Sox flagship. They are always going to be Red Sox heavy even during the Patriots' season unless the general public gets very apathetic to the Sox like they did in the fall this year. WEEI was forced to talk football more because no one cared about the Sox come late September. But if there is a modicrum of interest in the Sox, they will probably pick them over the Pats.

I don't "whine," I simply tell it like it is. All the OP did was express disdain for the unbalanced excesses of WEEI programming this time of year. I'm sure Bruins and Celtics fans have a similar gripe. You happen to be a baseball fan and like it, so bully for you. I absolutely DO switch off 'EEI this time of year but I've gravitated almost exclusively to the Hub anyway, so your point is moot. I think you're being unfair to the OP, whose observation is totally legitimate from a Pats fan's perspective.

So who is batting second this year,

Early in the year, I see Crawford batting 2nd (Pedroia or Scoutaro may lead off). Ideally...but July when the team should be nearing playoff form, I'd love to see:

Elsbury
Pedroia
Crawford
Gonzalez
Youks
Papi
Nancy
Scoutaro
Catcher
:D

Listen, we can talk about the draft all we want (I know 10% of what most of you guys know about college guys) but in the end, BB will always shock/surprise us. I always enjoy the weeks following the draft vs. the ones leading up to it.

Yup, that's just you.

I agree with the OP -- it's that time of year again. Whenever I'm flipping channels on TV or radio and see or hear that fossil Peter Gammons I get the immediate urge to fall into deep slumber.

That's funny. Seriously, baseball doesn't have enough action, strategy or physicality to keep me interested. Everyone just stands around, and everyone in the stands is engaged in OT conversation. I don't understand why a more action-oriented sport hasn't evolved to take its place. Professional lacrosse, perhaps?

For those reasons, I can't understand how soccer and cricket are the 2 most popular sports in the world. You can walk away for large chunks of time and never miss a thing. At least in baseball, there are certain guys I do not leave the room until their at bat is over...Papi/Manny and hopefully soon, Gonzalez.

Soccer is a foreign anomaly that doesn't fit the American sports psyche. Soccer could be cool if they had a smaller field and more shots on goal. Cricket isn't played here but I see that as more recreation than sport. Americans are proactive people who "get things done" and like to see results, which most of our sports reflect. The problem with baseball is that it's too tradition-bound and the pro game is poorly administered. We really do need another action-packed outdoor American sport for the spring and summer months.

Can't disagree with any of that.
I would watch the Pats even if they were 1-13 going into week 15.
I can't watch baseball if the Sox fall out of contention.

No, they don't. The gripe is about as stupid as it gets. There's not even free agency to talk about, since the CBA issues have killed that. Football talk is pretty much dead right now across the country, as the activity level on this board, and others, is reflecting. The first page in this forum, the main forum, still has threads started on 2/17 on it, and they had no replies to bump them, so the notion that they were popular threads kept alive doesn't apply.

Edit: As of this moment (1:00 pm), the closest thing to a football thread on the first page of Chiefsplanet is a thread about buying a Dexter McCluster T-shirt.

With baseball you can leave the room between pitches and not miss anything. It has evolved into a pageant of posers copping stances for the camera. It has become so slow moving that I have lost all interest. Rules I'd like to see:

...no more than 2 throws to first base from the pitcher per batter
...eight seconds to throw a pitch
...batters must stay in the batter's box
...no more than one trip to the mound from the dugout or catcher per inning

The first part of your post is the obvious fact no one wants to admit - that there are crickets chirping in every NFL market until the CBA.
The second part is just hilarious.

All excellent ideas. I just wish MLB wasn't so stuck in its ways and would actually welcome positive change.

As much as I have disinterest in MLB, the start of spring training is like the start of training camp for us NFL fans, a time when fans are hopeful and excited. At this time there is zero new info on the CBA situation and this has a muting effect on FA discussion, etc. This is the one time aside from the playoffs and World Series that I would not fault WEEI for talking beesball nearly 24/7. Just look at the front page of the Globe, also financially tied to the Sox, and you see training camp minutia and prattling.

I could tolerate WEEI if they confined the obsessive baseball talk to spring training and the woefully-too-long season but they don't. All through the football season we have hear the hot stove crap and before the NFL draft there are crickets (except of course after when they complain about BB's picks). This Fall and Winter it appeared that management finally forced them to talk football but you could tell that they were not comfortable doing it. Aren't Lou Merloni and Mike Adams great on football? Then there is the freaking Baseball Wednesday during the football season. And then there is Patriots Monday when they spend a few minutes complaining about BB / (formally) Moss and it is back to baseball talk. Screw them.

As far as stepping away between pitches you might miss some crotch scratches and 3-4 spits of brown juice. Baseball players are disgusting; between their scratching and spitting and drug-taking I can't deal with it anymore. And did you hear about some of the guys doing Viagra before the game? How smart is it to take Viagra when wearing a steel cup?

I don't think the OP, myself and others deny the fact that this time of year is the nadir for football activity and that baseball is starting again. The point is that football in general shouldn't be all but ignored on 'EEI, especially since the Patriots are as popular as they are. There always are things to talk about regarding the local team and the NFL in general. As I've noted before, the Hub offers much more balanced coverage of local teams this time of year, including football talk.

Chiefsplanet ALWAYS has off topic stuff.

WEEI has ex-football players like DeOssie, Smerlas and Brown as rotating co-hosts. It has Patriots Monday and Patriots Friday during the season, where multiple Patriots players come on for interviews. It has a weekly show with Belichick during the season. WEEI talks plenty of football.

This isn't about balance for you, it's about football talk. Hell, if you want to talk balance, where's your complaining about the lack of basketball talk on 98.5, especially during the trainwreck hours of 2-6?

True, but the point was that football news is so slow that there's not even one actual football thread currently on the front page of its main forum, unless you count the McCluster T-shirt thread.
