Heard it on the news today.....

The media sucks. This Dead Russert orgy is embarrassing. Do these idiots think the whole country thinks the media is the most important entity in the world? This thread is not about Tim. It's about the shameless self-promotion of the media and the seemingly endless supply of self-centeredness those on the TV media possess. They truly believe that the world revolves around them.

Dammit! I'm helping their cause by starting this thread. Maybe the media has become as important as they think they are to many people, but I don't offer such honors to them. This show is bizarre and disturbing as it reflect America's priorities...or does it? I guess that's the question I'm asking all of you here. Am I off target on this assessment?

No, you're not. And, btw--you are helping them by starting this thread.

And, another btw--if you want to think about the power of the media, look at the last couple of elections. I don't like Howard Dean one bit--and I have relatives in VT who've told me how effed up it was while he was in office (I'm sure there are people who loved him, that's fine)...but one scream and a few headlines about Kerry and and by by decent candidate (I know, saying I can't stand him and that he was the best dem running seems odd).

This time, the media did a big part in choosing both candidates. Look at the orgy over BHO...Hillary couldn't fight that, and McCain was the media's guy forever. So now we've got them...even though other qualified candidates were never heard...because the media shut them out of all access.

That's why I get a little annoyed when certain posters look down their noses at the blogs as not being legitimate news sources. I don't like thinkprogress, but I'm sure they publish more "news" than the NY Times does. And wasn't it Little Green Footballs that forced CBS to retract the national guard crap and ruined Dan Rather?

I know what you mean. But, if anyone deserved all the attention it was him. He was maybe that last intelligent person in news media. Dying so young it is a loss for us all.

I'm sorry, but I guess I'll go ahead and take exception to this sentiment... .

I find it interesting that both the right and the left blame the media for being "stupid" or "corrupt," depending, of course, upon what they expect and demand to hear from their news. I've been guilty of it, sure, and I'm a member of the media, myself.

Meanwhile, the simple fact is that, for 99.9999% of us, being in journalism is 1) not very lucrative, and 2) utterly thankless. We work shytty hours (nights), we deal with asshat politicians, uncooperative police/fire chiefs, and self-important, pretentious people who demand that their family potato sack race should be covered with a main, a colum, a sidebar and a picture package on A1, then blow a gasket when we tell them "that's not news."

If that's not bad enough, we're supposed to have the answer for every angry old man who calls us when the power or cable goes out. Then they rip us over the phone when they can't understand why we don't have the answers for everything that goes wrong in their neighborhood. Yeah, as if we have dozens of reporters at 1 a.m., just waiting to get to the bottom of the loud banging noises a few doors down. Dude, call the cops, not us.

But, when I'm offduty, and I overhear people complain how "stupid" their local 50 cent newspaper is for the one misspelled cutline or misidentified athlete, I go out of my way to ask them a question. Usually, they're left with nothing to say.

So ask yourself this: Do you make mistakes at your job? Of course you do. But do you have 50,000+ people examining every detail of your work each day, and calling you to complain about it?

I'd love to see how some people perform when 50,000-100,000 people review the direct results of every aspect of their work every single day.

Newspapers are moving to the Web and are downsizing like there's no tomorrow. People are being asked to take buyouts, and when not enough do, they're let go, or a reason for firing is conjured up by smarmy corporate consultants who don't have the first clue about responsible journalism (imagine the two Bobs from Office Space). I see it happening everywhere, and at every newspaper I've been at. Turnover is not replaced. When people leave, their workload is absorbed by those left behind, and their role is never replaced. Three percent cost of living raises, all but guaranteed when you're hired, are now rare, or spaced out to every 2-3 years. Overtime payrate is often denied. So yeah, morale isn't very good in newsrooms almost everywhere.

As for national and international news, and the network giants, and how they handle things... Well, the right hates them for telling the bad and not enough "good," and the left mistrusts them for being in bed with the military and ignoring the images and being dishonest about the carnage. But the truth is, we live in a soundbyte, ADHD age of short blips, and little substance. Newspapers and TV news are nothing more than a reflection of what dumb America demands, and corporate masters allow.

So blame your lazy fellow Americans, and perhaps the educational system and corporate entities for giving you news that never tells more than 10-25% of any story. Because the average schlep hammering away at the keyboard? He or she is busting his/her ass, and seeing his work and his pay hacked to pieces. He/she is certainly not "stupid," however.

The media honors it's own just like football honors its own. We certainly saw that with Marquise Hill, where even here we had a memorial post up for a year. Russert was very talented, very well spoken, and disliked by many on both right and left, which is usually the sign of a pretty good mainstream reporter.

    What ? Tim Russert is dead ? I hadn't heard :D

Looks like PC's nerve got touched a little. Too bad, the media sucks. Almost none of them are knowledgable, well spoken and not overtly partisan (I mean all three when I say "almost none").

I'm a software engineer - and, no, you can't film me and critique me.

Who's hosting Meet the Press tomorrow anyway ?

A few years back I had the misfortune of dealing with "The Media" their trucks and vans surrounded my Aunt's home, the State Police were also on the scene, in his own way one of the detectives I think was trying to warn me, the Media wanted to interview me, the Detective said "you don't have to speak with these people if you don't want to I can keep them away" I told him it was OK and that I would talk to them, they were the most obnoxious rotten f-cking ignorant bastards I have ever dealt with in my life, after this encounter with these vultures it became clear to me why Frank Sinatra hated the ground they walked on, and why Harry Truman threatend to Punch one of them in the face.

Like someone said to me yesterday, "what a pity that a damned good, honest, and intelligent person like Tim Russert passes away and the likes of Sean Hannity still walks the earth.

You need professional psychological help, NEM. How many alias have you tried now, 15? Damn, get a grip on your life, stop obsessing over this place.

Hope you feel better and can enjoy your life, instead of what you are doing now.

NBC is going to keep Russert alive for as long as they can, he was their last little thread to "Fair And Balanced" and "Unbiased News", he was a Left Wing Democrat but he did is best to try and appear "Down The Middle".

Without Russert NBC is now an organization of "Far Left Wing Biased Haters" far worse than Fox News, Limbaugh, or Hannity could ever be.

NBC will now keep Russert alive for as long as they can through their Archives of Clips from his past shows and other apearances, MSNBC will keep Russert alive forever to offset "Yelling Matthews" and that F-cking Creepy Socialist Bastard Olberman, again, Russert was all they had.

    Dear NBC
For God Sake, let this man go, don't torture his poor family with your endless barage of slobbering gibberish from the likes of that dreadful liberal Andrea Mitchell (MSNBC is losing thousands of viewers daily)

R.I.P. Russert, you were the only (new deomocrat) I could stand listening to, you got your sense of decency from your Father who was of "my time" he did a good job raisning you.

It's Time To Move On, we all die.
