Instead of spending a 1st day pick on a tight end, why not try to get one as a free agent? Two interesting possibilities: Bo Scaife and Owen Daniels. They are both restricted free agents but they are proven guys who we could plug into the offense right away. Would you rather sign one of those guys or trade for an aging Tony Gonzalez? Hmm, I'd go with the younger guys.

I like Owen Daniels alot and he would be a nice threat here but Scaife is not better than Watson. I'ld take Tony G over any of the three even with the loss of a draft pick but one has to wonder if Tony is still trying to be traded or if he is excited about the direction of his team with Pioli at the helm.

I really like Tony G as well with almost 100 catches adding a vet like this to Moss and Welker would look great for Tom's return. One rookie who I loved this week in the Senior Bowl was Shaun Nelson. Better blocker than I thought and made some nice catches during Senior bowl week. He looks like he takes coaching very well from what I overheard when they had Mike Tice miked up during one of the practices. If this kid was there at the end of the third with our compensatory pick I would grab him up.

Not to rain on your parade overmuch, but the going price for an RFA generally is a first-day pick (see: Welker, Wes).

I had listed Daniels as a possibility a couple of weeks ago in my first offseason/FA/draft mock, but he is apparently a RFA, and Houston will probably give him a high tender. I like him a lot and think he would be a good option if we could get him, but the cost will likely be too high.
