I know it takes two first round picks to sign a franchised player, but does anyone think its possible the Pats would offer a first rounder to a disgruntled franchised guy.

I'm thinking mostly about Suggs. He's young, and you probably wouldn't pay him that much more in guaranteed dollars (I could be wrong here) than the 7th overall pick, but you're getting a player that you know can play, and fills a big need.

From Baltimore's perspective, no one's going to give them 2 firsts, but maybe one would do if they're having a hard time signing suggs, and see a player that they think they can replace him with at 7.

    Any thoughts?

I don't see it. I'm pretty sure they want to sign Suggs to a long-term deal. LB isn't too deep in this draft, so they would be hard-pressed to replace him.

    Intriguing idea!
We know there are still GMs around who think a raw #7 pick with "all the potential in the world"
    is worth that money.

    I don't ...
and would rather have the proven player any day.

    #12 Jersey

According to the guys at Patriots Insiders the Pats are more interested in Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen. They say that they are in serious talks to see what it would take to get him.

He's a great player, not sure how he'd fit unless we went to a 4 man line though.

Yep. FWIW, that's what they posted in the insiders forum. They reported that the Eagles, Raiders and Patriots are showing interest..."New England is a serious possibility"...to quote them. Again take it for what it's worth. Who know's if anything will come of it? But the tone of the report sounded like the Pats are serious about trying to get him.

I dunno about Allen, he has like 3 DUI's in the last 2 years and is very vocal about his contract (See: Money).

The insiders mentioned the money issue in their report. The Chiefs prefer to keep him and will try to.

What would be the official ruling on the trade, this years #7 and next years pick or the Pats #1 picks from 09, and 2010? I just checked a chiefs forum over at prosportsdaily to see if any of them have heard of it and there was indeed a thread. One user was claiming that since we got the #7 pick from the 49ers it's not really "ours" and wouldn't count in this trade. Just trying to get some clarification.

Edwards certain Allen will play for Chiefs this season
    February 20
    Kansas City Star
"The contract situation involving the Chiefs and defensive end Jared Allen has the potential to get messy, as so many of their high-profile negotiations tend to be. For now, at least, coach Herm Edwards isn’t worrying about that. Allen almost certainly will play for the Chiefs in 2008 after they designated him as their franchise player Monday."

remember what kraft said last offseason with regard to moss, thomas and welker - New England took advantage of market inefficiencies to get those guys. Thomas should have been franchised, but wasn't. Welker should have been first round tendered but wasn't. Moss shouldn't have been available for a 4th, but was.

I think New England has far too much faith in their ability to identify and exploit such market inefficiencies to ever pay market price or top dollar. I'm sure they would love to have a guy like Suggs, but I doubt they would ever come to the conclusion that he is the best way they could spend 2 first round picks.
