    Wheatley is not built for outside covering action, especially trying to cover the 6-4 Chris Henry...I see him as more of a nickel back because he looks too raw and confused trying to cover the outside receivers...he was being abused last night...

    Haven't seen much Wilhite, but he has looked good in limited time and should be in the mix for a starter's spot...

    Bodden hasn't looked great but hasn't made any big mistakes either, I think he will be consistent enough to lock up that starting job...

    Springs hasn't done anything yet but when he gets healthy I will be interested in seeing what he can do...

    Lastly, Butler looked really good in my opinion last night and he could possibly be in the mix for a starting job too if he can keep up the solid play from last night...

    The only player from that group that he made me disappointed so far is Wheatley...hopefully he can get into a groove and show more of the promise we saw before the injury last year...

    Although it's early, I'm not really impressed. Wheatley giving up a touchdown on 4th and 16 really pisses me off. And what's with J.T. O'Sullivan carving up the Pats defense? He did last year as a 9er and he did again last night.

    Yeah it was somewhat annoying watching JT pick the defense apart, but how much game planning did the coaches put into stopping him. Nobody here really knows how much the coaches geared the defense to stop him. I do agree wheatley should be kinda ashamed of himself giving up a td on 4th and 16, thats just wrong even if it is preseason.

    springs is a lock at the #1 corner. He was brought in for one reason. To nullify terrell ownens. Hes been doing it his whole career. Butler is a stud. At worst hes the number 3 CB. My jurry is still out on Bodden. I havent heard alot about him on the field which usually means hes doing his job and thats a good thing.

    The secondary clearly looks like they're still trying to gel. That's the only reason that I'm not too concerned right now.

    I agree- I was *really* impressed by Butler's athleticism last night. When he flat-out outran Dorsey to cut him off and make that tackle, it was pretty impressive.

    Grades after two games

    Bodden = B+
    Butler = B-
    Love = C-
    Springs = D- (did you see Benson juke him on the first or second series,. Pitiful.)
    Wheatley = Incomplete

    I know wheatly hasn't looked great but I am not using that TD to Chris Henry as a barometer because the mistake he made I know I have seen him be able to do.

    If you have watched the game again or at least that play you can clearly see that wheatly was slow to break and turn his hips in from the backpeddal. And one thing I know he has because we have seen it is he has quick and fluid hips. So that play doesn't concern me that much.

    As far as the rest of the DBs

    Merriweather is turning into one really good safety.

    Sanders is what he is which is good but not great.

    Bodden looks to be our best CB

    Whilhite looks to be developing nicely and could be starting opposite Bodden.

    Springs should be good but we need to see more (good is based on past performance)

    Wheatly see above.

    Butler and Chung look to be good players but they need to continue developing.

    McGowan plays on alot of STs units and looks to be a really good back up

    Slater is STs only guy but he is listed as a DB.

    If we use last year as a barometer this year should be much better if we use 03 I'll take a wait and see but I suspect they will be close oreven better.

    Given how many passes were completed against him, it seems wrong to say "Incomplete." ;-}

    BTW, I saw Ellis Hobbs get absolutely abused last night by Indy. I'd give him an "F."

    No springs was brough in this year. He covered TO when he was in dallas and philly and springs was in washington.

    I think the unit is deep and level, i.e. there are no Ty Laws but there are also no Hank Poteats. We have a whole bunch of "number two corners". Wheatley is definitely the weak link; I wonder if those wrist injuries are mentally blocking him.

    We signed Springs before Buffalo signed TO, so obviously Springs wasn't brought in to stop TO specifically. It's definitely a nice perk that it worked out that way, though.

    It's my belief that all this Cb stuff last nite was intentional by Pees and BB.

    Wheather it was Ochocinco or Chris Henry,the defense was NOT rotating A safety to that side.

    It's preseason,they wanted to see what Wheatley could do,they left him out on an island,on purpose.

    THAT'S how you evaluate people.....it's, trademark- belichick,imo.

    Lastly,that pass from Sullivan to Henry,was phenomenal.

    As a minor point, I remember Phil Simms making a specific point that the Patriots do not do much game planning for preseason games. It is far more important, in their minds, that they work on whatever it is they want to do than that they try to win the game.

    great point. I think all teams use vanilla offences and defences for preseason for one goal. evaluating players. Hell, why do you think these rookie QB (Stafford and Sanchez) look good in preseason. They have a rude awakening come the first regular game. Further, I heard a rumor (I dont know if it is true) that head coaches before the pre season games tell each other to pick on certain players so to evaluate them...

    any thoughts

    Well I got my info from a different source but ill take your word for it. Bottom line is that we got a starting CB that is needed that can hopefully shut down #1 wide receivers. Remember we are all on the same side..GO PATS

    OT a little bit here ... always take Wiki with a grain of salt - or check the sources. :) There is no source of Springs' signing on Wiki right now.
