It is time for many of us to change our perspective (guess) with regard to Thompkins. Many of us had him with little chance of making the team, especially if everyone were healthy. Of course, Dobson is a health question mark.

Mini camp is over. Training camp has started. Thompkins seems to be doing fine with the first string. Thompkins figures to do fine for the rest of camp, and probably at least OK in the preseason.

    CONCLUSION
Thompkins seems very, very likely to make the team.

THE REST OF THE RECEIVERS - QUESTION MARKS
All of the rest have question marks except Edelman.

Lets see how he does in pads. He looks good at the beginning and drops off during the regular season. I hope he is consistent with his play this season

I like Thompkins, seems like the real deal. Not sure who he reminds me of but he seems like a solid all around WR

Let's wait for a few padded practices. So far so good.

I think his start to camp is a reflection of the work he put in during the winter and spring. This is where the "2nd year leap" is made - the offseason.
So I'll be very curious to see how Dobson does when he returns.

We are two days into camp and they haven't even had a padded practice yet. Let's not jump to any conclusions. Yes, he looks like he is going to be on the roster and could have a decent sized role on this team, but the guy was a stud last preseason and although he had a decent rookie campaign, his preseason studliness didn't translate into the regular season.

I always thought he would make the team. I didn't think he would be activated a lot of games though. If he continues to play like he has the last two practices, he will prove me wrong. But there is a long, long way to go before we draw conclusions.

Probably didn't have anything to do with gronk missing 70% of the season due to injury., Amendola missing what 6 games due to injury, Dobson missing a bunch of games due to injury, and then he himself missing a few games due to injury.

Consider the revolving door we had at most of the WR slots last year the numbers he put up were solid. the only one with any chemistry with Brady last year was Julian.

Don't forget Thompkins was a healthy scratch in a few games last year. He was a rookie and that means he has a learning curve, but I thought he was just decent last year. For an undrafted rookie, he was great. For a rookie in general, he was just decent.

He dropped off because he got injured. I'm not sure why this tends to get glossed over so frequently.

He reminds me of David Givens. Fast but not really fast and good at getting open.

He really does remind me of Chad Johnson circa 2004-5.

If you were someone who didn't think he was going to make this team then it is certainly time to admit that was wrong.

Personally I think he is going to be a beast and love what I have seen through his rookie year and now 2 practices but clearly we don't know where the ceiling will be and he needs to do it with pads on for sure 2 unpadded means little. But again if you see his floor so low as roster bubble I think your way off. Until Boyce, Dobson, or Lafell show something he is WR3 and playing very well at it.

    Yes.

Thompkins may be an absolute bust, but I suspect that he will be the worth the risk of a roster spot. If he fails, I don't think that this would be evident until the season starts.

    Disable Jersey

Why do people really insist on getting suckered by the underwear practices every year? Nothing has changed, in all likelihood.

    Locks:

Edelman (Leading receiver last year, new contract)
Dobson (2nd round, 2nd year, showed some promise as a rookie)

Assumed locks because of money, but could be cut under the right circumstances:

Amendola (swallowing $6.8m for a player who caught 54 passes?)
LaFell (would be a $3 million dollars + "whoopsie")

Nothing protecting them except their play:

    Thompkins
    Boyce

3 Major areas seem to have a potential surplus this year:

    QB
    OL
    WR

They'll have to trim the fat somewhere. Where that is will likely help determine how many WRs are kept. Browner missing 4 games could, conceivably, delay any decision.

What if he doesn't outplay the competition for his job in camp?
Surely you don't think he earned a pass based on the first day of flag football.

Edelman amendola Dobson lafell Boyce is a realistic possibility for the wr position even if Thompkins has a leg up

Which one of those do you think lost the chance to beat him out based upon his practice yesterday?

"He looks good at the beginning and drops off during the regular season."?????

Your sample size is 1 season. If you wrote "He LOOKED good at the beginning of the season and DROPPED off during the latter part of the regular season" then I could agree.

Your quote sounded as if there is some sort of ongoing pattern. As I wrote a couple of weeks ago, have some perspective, people - - he was a rookie UDFA last year. Chances are there will be marked improvement in his second pro season, especially with seasonal stamina.

But anyone saying that what happened over one season (either positive or negative) makes last year's undrafted rookie a lock or a bust is just wrong. He is still in the prove-it mode either way. So far, through minicamp and first two days of TC this year, he sure does look as if he is moving to the upside in his second year. If I recall, Troy Brown was cut from the team by Parcells and out of the NFL in his rookie year. WR's can develop.

My point is that I expect Thompkins to look at least OK through the start of the season.

He was an undrafted free agent last year. Based on the fact that he actually made contributions you cannot call him a bust. Even if he never plays another minute of football, he's not a bust. Any UDFA that actually makes an NFL roster has already exceeded expectations. That being said, I think he's going to do fine. I have a feeling we can count on him for about 600 yards and 6 TDs this year. I actually think he could do better, but if Gronk, Amendola, and Dobson stay healthy (fingers crossed) and Edelman does about what he did last year there probably just aren't a lot more catches or yards there to get.
