Fire Could Affect Nation's Beer Supply POSTED: 6:26 pm EDT October 3, 2006 Slideshow: Fire Threatens Part Of Nation's Beer Supply The Federal Bureau Of Alcohol, Tobacco, And Firearms will investigate a fire in Yakima Valley, Wash., that could affect the nation's beer supply. The fire broke out Monday at a 40,000 square foot warehouse where hops are stored. Firefighters had to remove the warehouses' metal siding and spray water directly on the hops in order to contain the blaze. No one was hurt but according to officials, the fire ruined roughly 4 percent of America's supply of hops. Industry experts estimate the loss could amount between $3.5 million and $4 million. Brewers use hops as flavoring for beer and ale. Officials have yet to determine the impact the fire will have on brewers and the price of beer. Copyright 2006 by NBC10.com. All rights reserved.
