Think Belichick drafts 1 or 2 Crimson Tide players this year?

Since Saban left LSU it seems like LSU was not so big a target for picks in the draft for BB and the FO.

Now that Saban and Belichick are not competitors and seeing that Saban is best friends with Bill and now Nick being head coach in Bama,I wonder if we start looking at the Tides prospects in the coming years.

They always seem to have some good Linebacker cores there,I bet we take at least 1 guy coming out of Alabama in this year draft (not sure who is coming out or is eligible on the Tide squad)

Why this year? Saban won't know the players any more than anyone else.

    Future years, maybe.

And they won't have received the coaching that I'm sure Belichick expects to get from a guy who's been with Saban for 4 years.

Did we get any Michigan State players?

Maybe on day 2 or as an undrafted FA. Either way, it'd have little to with Saban. Also, though Saban obviously hasn't been there for a few years, there are at least three LSU players off the top of my head who have to be on the Pats' draft charts. Overall though, I agree that reconnecting a pipeline with Saban for future drafts is a good thing for this franchise.

This is a myth. From 2000-2004, Saban could have recommended 14 players out of 44 to the Pats, and that includes Tom Brady, whom we all know was sold to Belichick by Dick Rehbein. Of the 14 drafted players, only 4 beyond Tom Brady have done anything. They are Matt Light, Jarvis Green, Ben Watson, and David Givens.

Yes, he did suggest Eric Alexander and Randall Gay, but Alexander hasn't produced much yet (though he is showing signs) and Randall Gay has been injured the last 2 years.

One of the best years that the Pats drafted was when they picked players that Saban didn't coach or players he hadn't ever played against. That was 2003.

It's in between. As DaBruinz showed, the Patriots are very capable of drafting without being told by Saban who to draft. OTOH, we clearly brought in more LSU players than we did from any other school - same with Florida last year.

OTOH if we do not draft anyone from Alabama this year, will the beavis and butthead of radio.. Felger and Borges speculate that BB and Saban have not buried the hatchet and their war continues.??. stay tuned.. it's all about the ratings, nothing matters not even the truth.

More idiot speculation by the Twin Boobs of mass media.
In this week's press conf BB was talking about how he was on the phone having a long talk with Saban; this was before Saban quit. BB claimed they were just talking football. Do Felgie and Borgia ever check their facts???

Yeah, that piqued my interest - partly because it was difficult to believe that the night before Saban's decision (which is when it was) that Bill didn't ask about Saban's decision - but mostly because 1+1 = 2 and I'm sure Belichick was talking to a trusted guy about some different options vs. The Jest as Saban played them twice too - and one very recently.

    Brady=Michigan Saban =Michigan State

Or are we giving him credit for every player in a conference he's coached?, (David Givens?)

    I doubt it.

The "pipeline" theory of drafting is stupid.

Why limit yourself to drafting out of only a few schools, out of 100+, where you have an "in". Why do they have a scouting department if all they do is draft players from LSU, Fresno state, etc.?

I thought the same too about the Jets. Then I remembered that the Phins LOST to the Jets both times. Bummah!

I must have missed it but when did they ever say there was any hatchet to bury? These two have long been very close friends as well as kindred X's and O's spirits. Even coaching against each other in the same division didn't change that, just limited what they could talk about for a couple of years. Now that hotline is back up - way more important than any personnel scouting tips. I'll bet you they have already tossed around some ideas about how to flumox the puffin mangenius. And I'll also bet that BB knew Saban well enough to have figured out this was apparently a flyer he took on the NFL and it was not likely to pan out any differently than it did.

    RayClay -
I gave Saban credit for every player drafted by the Patriots that Saban either COACHED (Jarvis Green, Rohan Davey, TJ Turner, Greg Robinson-Randall, Marquis Hill) or played against (Ben Watson, Guss Scott, David Givens, Matt Light, Cedric Cobbs, Brock Williams, Jabari Holloway, Tom Brady, and David Nugent). I felt that those were the most likely candidates that Saban could have potentially weighed in on.

When you look at that list, David Givens, Matt Light, Tom Brady, Ben Watson are the only ones who have really done anything of note in the league. I guess you could include Greg Robinson-Randall since he was on the Patriots for the 1st SB as their starting RT, but he didn't last beyond that.

Now, Saban did also get the Pats Randall Gay and Eric Alexander. Alexander has promise, but I don't see him as much more than a nickle LB unless he can learn not to over-pursue the way he did against the Titans. Randall Gay showed great promise his rookie year, but injuries have cost him his last 2 seasons and it remains to be seen if the kid can ever get healthy again. So these two I did NOT give credit for, but I did not hold them against Saban either.

You can learn a lot from losing too. The reality is that Belichick and Saban have consisted of 1/4 of The Jest's games this year. Belichick's staff is 100% capable of preparing for the game but it never hurts to get an "outside" opinion and I have no doubt that's what he was doing.

Unlike with Mangina there has never been any indication that Belichick and Saban had any kind of problem whatsoever. Like you said, they could no longer help each other out with strategic ideas like they could have in the past but there is no reason to believe the ties that bound Bill and Nick were severed in any way.
