According to The Smoking Gun, the pats are still going for a 19-0 Trademark.

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2008/0421081pats1.html

While the team may have been expected to withdraw its applications after finishing at 18-1, a Patriots lawyer recently amended the original filings to correct a typographical error, a clear indication that the organization remains committed to securing the marks (perhaps Bill Belichick & Co. are anticipating perfection in the 2008 season).

As seen below, on April 11 the Patriots tweaked their original United States Patent and Trademark Office filings to correct a misspelling. The team wanted to make it clear that they seek to sell toy banks, not "toy bans."

I don't approve if they did do this (not that anyone cares).

As a fan, it was a lot of pressure and brutal down the stretch. I can't imagine what it was like for the players and staff.

2038 - the Toronto Bills are going for 19-0. To sell stuff the need to pay the Krafts. The Krafts learned this when they wanted to sell stuff with three-peat in 2005 and the Lakkers owners or someone had that trademarked.

This is only a bussiness thing

Awesome.

If our worst problem is our team wanting to win every single game on the schedule - then great.

no business should own that trademark

The trademark process takes forever. Now that they have started it and already invested in the associated legal fees, they may as well see it through.

They laughed all the way to the bank. Fans feel the pain. The multi-millionaires in jock straps move on quickly. Fact of life.

Maybe they are doing it so that the Kraft enterprise can sell the rights to a team if some else ever does it in the future. If the Jaguars do it in 2013, the Patriots can sell the rights them for 10 or 12 million, for example.

Re: TheSmokingGun: Despite Super Bowl loss, 18-1 football team wants "19-0" trademark

It is nothing but a business decision.

Pat Riley owns the trademark for Threepeat. His Laker team lost the series that would have given them their third consecutive title. The Chicago Bulls later did it twice, the Yankees did it, and later the Lakers and all had to pay Riley royalties to use the phrase.

I think that game on Feb 3rd , threw out any chances for that.. This is assinine.. Worry about 2008 and 1 game at a time.. Dont give teams any more amo...

How can anyone not want to gag over this display of arrogance?

This is like Brady worried about flying in his hair stylist before the Bowl, or Belichick doing all those pre-game parties -- times 1,000. What's the focus here? Football? Sure.

Another set up for disaster. Might as well paint a big target on themselves.

Gag me with a giant spoon.

It could also be revenge for the cr*p that the team was given all season. If anyone else ever gets 19-0, they have to pay up. . . . and imagine if the Pats said "no." :)

But they won't. This is simply business and money talks. I can think of 8 or 10 million reasons why the Krafts would say 'Yes!'. :D

ahh but the USC Trojans didn't have to pay Pat a dime all they did was change the spelling on peat to pete (like their coach) Threepete. :D

Actually they would have (Riley won on that in court) but it didn't matter when they couldn't get it done on the field.

Bingo! He has BINGO!

This is sickening bullsh|t. Kraft has done great things for our team, but this truly embarasses me. Disgusting greed.

Re: TheSmokingGun: Despite Super Bowl loss, 18-1 football team wants "19-0" trademark

i think the whole thing sucks if this is true.

It's fine that the Bulls or Lakers did it b/c they actually won.

But if no one ever goes 19-0 and then some team finally does in 2020 and they wanna make shirts, they'll have to pay the pats.

People will be asking "Why do we have to pay them for that, they never went 19-0, they were 18-1?"

It comes off as bitter and pathetic imo
