The sun stops in the sky and begins it's trek back North at 12:30 am tomorrow (Dec 22) to mark the beginning of winter and the eternal cycle of darkness and light. Pretty cool, huh?

But did you notice there's no references to the Winter Solstice any more? The panty-waist slobbering politically-correct whiners have all but removed the holiday from public displays and stores. No one ever say "Happy Solstice" anymore because they've been told not to. If you say it out loud, people just look at you strangely.

Whatever happened to good old-fashioned traditions? Humans have been celebrating the Solstice since the beginning of history, but now the Nanny State has all but killed it. well, I don't know about you, but when someone says "Happy Holidays" to me, I'm responding with an unashamed "Happy Solstice to you, too!"

As I type we are preparing for the annuall Winter Solstice Party, it usually consists of some Absinthe, big chocolate eclairs, some "no name" and lots of crazy dancing to some long tracks by the Dead or Phish... one year one of the crazies almost froze to death when we found her the next morning.. now we have a designated partier to make sure it does not happen. Only when we are safely inside and all are accounted for can the designated partier imbibe in the "green fairy"..

While many forget this crazy of craziest days, we look forward to a day of debauchery and hedonistic behavior. We always fight the tide of folks who want to turn this into a family day, while we cherish the time to act like complete azzholes.. no room for children in that celebration.

Sunset has been getting later in the day for like 5 or 6 days now; but the important thing is that now sunrise will start coming earlier too.

Slobbering politically correct do-gooders call it a "holiday tree."

The rebirth of the sun is not a HOLIDAY, it's a HOLY DAY. (Or a HOLLY DAY.)

I don't care if you call it SOL or SUNNA or WHATEVER, NONE of it sounds like "CHRIS" or "CHRIST."

    HAPPY SOLstice!!!!!

Not to nit-pik, but sunrise has not been getting later, it's been getting earlier. The shortest day (amount of sunlight) is Dec. 22nd and the sun sets earlier and earlier in the northern hemisphere until today.

Starting tomorrow, the sun will set later and later until the summer solstice.

You're making it out as simpler than it is. We've already gained a good 5 or 6 minutes to the end of the day, just that the beginning of the day has continued to come later. A simple google search will confirm this.

You're absolutely correct and I was wrong! In Massachusetts, the sun set at it's earliest on Dec. 9th @ 4:11. On Dec. 22nd (solstice) it set at 4:15. So 4 minutes difference...close enough to your statement.

Great post! I love it and get what you are doing. But, it seems like some on here are taking it as it was written.

The attack on Christmas is still the attack on Christmas. I am not sure if I agree that there is an attack on Christmas, because I am not Christian and really don't care.

This is like the people that get upset on Columbus day and insist that Columbus did not discover America, the Vikings did. Who cares, the Vikings can write history as it happened to them. but, in terms of America, Columbus is the guy.

So to sum it up, yes we all know that Christmas was a reaction by the church to stifle a pagan holiday. They tried telling people not to party on solstice, but people love to party. So, they invented a holiday of their own to counter it. Everyone knows this.

And yet... I as a non-Christian still like Christmas as a holiday to get off work and spend time with family and so forth. I even like Christmas trees :)

    Holy crap, druid spam.

So anyhoo, amidst the hubbub and commercialism, remember the reason we make merry and exchange gifts this season -- to coax the sun back around so we are not cast into everlasting darkness.

It's called SOLstice for a reason!
