All Pre-season games are finally over, there's nothing new to be added, what is done is and, and it is what it is. Time for the last 53-man projection, before the actual cutdowns happen saturday.

OFFENSE (25/26*)
QB(3) - Brady, Mallet, Garoppolo - Yes, Mallet's in. I don't see BB cuting him and only a offer (that's not coming) will leave this position with only 2 players

RB(5) - Ridley, Vereen, Bolden, White, Develin - Sorry Gray fans, he's not here. Stashing him in the PS is fine. White has not showed anything out of the ordinary, but he's capable of playing all 3 downs and adds something to the tem.

WR(5/6*)- Amendola, Dobson, Edelman, Thompkins, LaFell, Tyms* - I am very torn, because even though Tyms doesn't count for the first 4 games, he has yet to play with Brady himself. Still, It's a freebie, so he may stick around. Boyce is a disappointment, he gets cut, but i don't think he'll last enough to PS, though. Gallon does.

OL(9) - Solder,Kline, Wendell, Connolly, Vollmer, Cannon, Stork, Devey, Flemming - I've put everyone here simply because there is a lot of versatility within (not necessarily quality). Cave and Halapio go to PS.

TE (3) - Gronkowski, Wright, Hooman - Maneri is right up there in the emergency call list (knocks on wood)

DEFENSE(24/25*)
DEs/OLBs(4) - Ninkovich, Jones, Buchanan, Moore - There's no way Moore passes through waivers, and he doesn't need to. He'll be able to contribute this season. NO. Bequette does NOT make it, even after a great game.

DTs(6) - Wilfork, Easley, Siliga, Jones, Vellano, Worthy - Worthy gets in after being acquired and rapidly grasping the playbook. He gets the nod over Bequette

LB(5) - Mayo, Collins, Hightower, White, Flemming - Beauharnais gets on the PS again

CBs(5/6*) - Revis, Dennard, Ryan, Butler, Arrington, Browner* - Swanson is also in the PS. Butler is the surprise, getting good plays in all games and playing ST

Safeties(4) - McCourty, Harmon, Chung, Ebner - Wilson is the odd man out, however he may be back thanks to the new rules of PS.

SPECIALISTS(4)
K - Gostkowsky
P - Allen
LS - Danny Aiken
ST - Slater

Practice Squad(7) - Gray, Gallon, Halapio, Cave, Beauhernais, Swanson, Wilson, Free Space (x3) - 3 Free Spaces for whatever JAGs may fall on our lap

--

Any thoughts?

I think Beauharnais makes the team as he seems to have the best handle on the D of all the backup LBs. Also You probably are stuck carrying 6 LBs due to special teams. So you are probably stuck making a tough decision somewhere else when Browner/Tyms come back.

Right now I think Tyms comes back and 4 weeks and if our team is healthy we either makes the PS or is gone. I like the player but you don't need THAT many pass catchers (Gronk/Wright/WRs/Develin/White/Vereen) is plenty and Tyms would probably not get any balls thrown his way anyway and be inactive.

Browner is harder though cause he will make this team when he comes back and that means someone has to go. If Moore/Buchanan are looking good by that point then you don't cut either and the other 9 DBs are all locks IMO.

So either you probably let an OL walk and hopefully make the PS. I think Kline/Devey/Cave/Baker/whoever can easily do that. 8 is a little light but you only activate 7 anyway and if your other guy will slip through waivers which he should i see no issue.

Of course this is a moot point if you cut Mallet at some point : P

At the risk of nothing good happens after midnight, here's my knee-jerk 53-man roster, without a whole lot of thought put into it.

QB - agree, Pats go with three

RB - Ridley, Vereen, White, Develin and Bolden.
I'm going with five here, and with Develin that means only two TE; gotta' make space somewhere.

TE - Gronkowski, Wright
Hoomanawanui becomes the latest to find out that you can't make the club from the tub. He and Maneri are kept on speed dial and could return sooner or later if not signed elsewhere.

WR - Boyce and Gallon are waived, while Tyms gets a four-week furlough.

OL - Solder, Vollmer, Cannon, Stork and Fleming are automatically in. I'll go with Connolly, Wendell, Kline and Devey also in, which means Cave, Barker and Halapio are waived; Martin to IR. Not particulary certain about any of those final four though.

DL - I'm going with nine: Buchanan, Worthy, Siliga, Vellano and Jones are in, with Moore, Bequette, Tuipulotu and Manumaleuna getting waived.

LB - I'll go with six. I really don't know who the backups will be, but I'll guess Fleming, JDavis and Beauharnais surviving and White and Morris being cut.

CB - five make the week one roster, with Browner suspended; Swanson get waived.

S - Gary is gone, that's about the only given. Before training camp began I did not think Chung would make the roster, but is seems like he will by default. Kanorris Davis could have unseated him, but he too missed too much time with some undisclosed injury.

I agree with the majority of your projections, although I disagree and think that Moore makes it--especially with the injury to Buchanan (let's hope it's not too severe). Other than that, I think you're pretty darn close to what we'll see.

That wouldn't surprise me in the least. In terms of units rather than players, they could easily go with ten DL and five LB rather than nine DL and six LB, for example - in which case it's almost a given that Moore makes the roster.

One player who I think we may need, is Hooman as a blocking TE. I don't know if that will be a revolving door type of thing this year with signing him later, cutting him, signing him, etc---but I do think that we'll need him as a pure blocking TE.

The only way that I think we could get by without him would be if we decide to use the OL/TE, which I suppose may be a distinct possibility the more I think about it. Either way, that particular player whether it's OL or Hooman, isn't catching a pass anyway, so maybe it doesn't matter?

Nice roster. Not a bad PS as well, although I'd like to swap out Gallon for Tyms myself.

C'mon, you've had plenty of time to think about it. This has been at the forefront of everyone's mind around here for over a month now.

I wonder whether HooMan is not well enough known that he actually does make the club from the tub. I suppose it depends on the severity of his injury. They may simply have been resting him in a situation where he might play were it the regular season this week, although that did look like an injury that could linger.

Very tough. Browner and Tyms decision will come later in the year. Sealver Siglia will get a spot over L.T. Tuipulotu if/when healthy. Chris Jones was probably the hardest cut. Things would be easier if we traded Mallet. I was very tempted to cut Bolden, Hooman, and Chung.

Practice Squad:

TE Steve Maneri
LB J Davis
OG Jon Halapio
OG Barker
LB James Morris
FB McCuller
DT Chris Jones-not sure if he is eligible though
DB Kanorris Davis
WR Josh Boyce
One Open Spot from some other team.

I think Mallett might be out : the inaction last night having more to do with "getting paid for the year if he gets hurt" than "bubble wrap in case of trade"... I haven't felt this way until the very end of camp. If indeed, the rookie has surpassed him (or, made it relatively close), I think there are enough guys BB doesn't want to lose to make Mallett a casualty here. Add in the .77M $ salary and that might be it for him.

Of course, BB is always full of tricks. Knowing him, he might be on the phone right now to ship Wilfork off to Arizona...

Great job. I would have Tavon Wilson over Ebner but otherwise the same roster.

There's what I think will happen and what I'd like to see. For the latter, my personal preferences:

QB(2): Brady, Garoppolo. Mallett gets traded for something ... anything.
RB(4): Ridley, Vereen, White, +1 (Bolden/Gray, or post-cut roster pickup)
FB(1): Develin
WR(5): Edelman, Dobson, Amendola, LaFell, Thompkins; Tyms is suspended, and can stay for now
TE(3): Gronkowski, Wright, Hoomanawanui
OT(4): Solder, Vollmer, Fleming, Devey (can also play guard)
OG/C(5): Cannon (can also play tackle), Stork, Connolly, Kline, +1 (Halapio, Wendell, trade or post-cut pick up)

DE(4): Jones, Ninkovich, Buchanan, Moore
DT(6): Wilfork, Easley, Siliga, Jones, Worthy, Vellano
LB(5): Mayo, Hightower, Collins, Fleming, Morris (if his injury is minor; otherwise Beauharnais)
S(4): McCourty, Harmon, Wilson, Ebner; I know Chung will stick, but I don't want him; I think Ebner can be more than just a STer
CB(5): Revis, Dennard, Ryan, Arrington, Butler; Browner starts the year on suspension

K: Gostkowski
P: Allen
LS: Aiken
ST: Slater

That's 52 players, plus 2 guys starting with a 4 game suspension. #53 could be a 6th LB/STer, a 5th safety (Chung in reality), or an additional OL.

Moves that I'd like to see:

- Pick up a 4th RB. No one has stood out so far.
- Pick up or trade for an OG. Alex Boone is probably not realistic, but still tantalizing.

My final 53 based on the players we have right now:

QB (3) Brady, Garoppolo, Mallett
RB (3) Ridley, Vereen, Develin
WR (6) Edelman, Dobson, Thompkins, Amendola, LaFell, Slater
TE (3) Gronkowski, Wright, Hoomanawanui
C (2) Wendell, Stork
G (4) Connolly, Kline, Barker, Cannon
T (4) Solder, Vollmer, Devey, Fleming
DE (4) Jones, Ninkovich, Buchanan, Easley
DT (4) Wilfork, Siliga, Jones, Vellano
ILB(3) Mayo, Hightower, Beauharnais
OLB(4) Collins, Davis, White, Fleming
CB (4) Revis, Dennard, Butler, Arrington
SS (3) Harmon, Browner, Wilson
FS (3) McCourty, Ryan, Chung
ST (3) Gostkowski, Allen, Aiken

I'm not thrilled with the Offensive line depth, i'd be happy to pick up a proven vet from the waivers.

No rookie running backs make the main roster, a couple of fall to the PS

@chasa

As a 4th-round draft pick, I would be extremely surprised if James White is waived. In addition, three RB/FB seems to be too few. Since Browner is suspended for the first four games, White can take his place on your roster.

Here's a few thoughts:
  • I made my roster off the assumption of playing a 3-4 defense, it was just easier for me to place players that way.
  • I kept Browner off to make it easier on me because he is suspended the first four games anyway.
  • Once Browner comes back, I think Ebner, Wilson or Chung get the axe unless one of them is injured already.
  • I think the OL is pretty straight forward. Fleming and Devey will be inactive on game day.
  • ILB/OLB and DE is where things got really tough. I went back and forth between Darius Fleming and James Morris about one hundred times.
  • I can't cut Zach Moore.
  • Worthy versus Vellano was tough. Worthy is enticing and I expect Vellano to be available if we cut him.
  • I don't really know where to put Hightower anymore. I put him at 3-4 OLB but I don't know. Does he just not really fit our defense anymore? Maybe he xists just to spell Jones and Ninkovich now.
  • We have a bunch of people that can play SS but McCourty is our only true FS. I put Ryan there because I don't think he would be a very good SS.
  • Another thought I went back and forth on was cutting one of Hoomanwanui and Develin to make room for an extra defender. If I had to choose, I would cut Develin and keep one of James Morris or Joe Vellano.
  • The two positions that were hardest for me to cut people at were DT and Safety. The down side of this is that those are the shallow spots all across the league so anyone we cut at DT and Safety has a very high chance of getting picked up. It's a rich man's dilemma.

Browner & Tyms suspended.

To me, carrying a 3rd QB is a waste of a roster spot.

I don't really take into account the suspensions because when the suspended player comes back someone has to go. if we don't sign any cut players from other teams, the roster i put up is what i'd expect to see week 5 moving forward.

I think baquette or whatever his name is makes it. Could see them cutting white. He's not much of a runner.
