I have been thinking about the best scenario for the Pats in giving them the most flexibilty and leverage for the 1st round.. and here are my thoughts..

    1. A run on OT's 5-6 possible 1st round picks..
    2. A run on CB's some draftnicks are calling Hayden/K. Wilson/D McCourty/
    3. Claussen and Bradford both go early
    4. A run on Safeties.. at least 3.. Berry /E. Thomas/ Mays

This potentially pushes some big names our way.. and will give us some good leverage w/ teams in the 2nd round trading up for the runs on those prospective positions.. i.e Detroit / St. Louis.. looking for that last OT..

I agree I would love to see the draft shake out that way.

    1. Suh and McCoy will be gone for sure. (2)

    2. Agreed, hopefully both Bradford and Clausen go before the 22nd pick. (2)

    3. Berry, Haden, Mays (hopefully), E. Thomas (hopefully) and Kyle Wilson (hopefully) go before the 22nd pick. (5)

    4. Derrick Morgan and JPP. (2)

    5. McClain. (1)

    6. Bulaga, Okung, A. Davis, T. Williams, Iupati and B. Campbell (hopefully). (6)

    7. Spiller and Matthews. (2)

God I hope so, another possibility is a run on RBs. It seems like teams consistently reach for some and the quicker the good ones drop off the board the quicker others start reaching to grab one.

All seems likely except Mays going in the first.

I'm not sure about a run on RBs. If you assume that Spiller and Mathews go in the 1st, the next players are Best, Dwyer, Gerhart, Hardesty and Tate. Every team is going to evaluate them differently, you don't get the same 'run' as you do on tackles where the players are often interchangable.

Most of the teams at the top of the 2nd round need other players, mainly defensive linemen and linebackers. There really isn't a huge need for running backs this year, most teams are somewhat set for 2010 at least. The Patriots are a good example - could upgrade but would be ok going into 2010 with the same RB corps.

Sorry to say there is one fault in your logic (but otherwise I agree with 1, 2 and 4).

#3 it would be better if Jimmy Clausen FALLS to us at #22. Not that NEP draft him ourselves, but it would get Pats phone ringing with lucerative trade down / or trade out offers. (see. Josh Freeman, Aaron Rodgers, Brady Quinn).

Late teens - to mid '20's is generally where the falling 1st round QB's get taken. And a potential franchaise QB fetches a premium in draft trade compensation (moreso than another position).

But good though on the other points, It is always good when positions that Pats are strong in get overdrafted in the first round - hopefully this year safeties, OL, CB's get taken early and often.

I suspect that Belichick isn't as anxious as you guys that the corners be picked early. Wilson would look good with Bodden, Butler and Wilson would have us set for years.

The trenches are important, which is why the large bodies (offensive and defensive linemen) go early. Missing from your list are the DL. After the obvious Suh and McCoy, there's a possibility that both Dan Williams and Brian Price could be off the board. There's even a possibility that Odrick could be gone too.

In addition, the draft's best pass rushers go quickly (fill in the blanks). We can also add the best RB and best WR (whoever they are).

Eggs-Zack-Leeee.......... Clausen dropping to our slot would be the best case scenario. We, obviously, don't want him ourselves but many others teams would want him. He is a 1st round talent evaluated talent at the most important position in football.

Having said all that, I don't believe it will occur but stranger things have happened in the past...

    #12 Jersey

If St. Louis takes Bradford and Detriot goes O line and take O Krung and Tampa Bay takes McCoy, is anybody here interested in trading with Washington to go get Suh at #4.
