The Patriots Offense Does Not Need To Add An Elite Wide Receiver
    By: Russ Goldman

One of the big topics of discussion is whether or not the Patriots need a deep threat receiver, but looking at their history that doesn't need to be the case....

While I like their young wr's I think the article ignores the frailty of this corps. If they stay healthy and Price can stretch the field reliably then they are in good shape, however that is alot to assume and Belichik generally likes to have insurance for injuries. OL is the priority right now but IMO they really need another reliable wr to add to the unit.

Overall I expect much more from Edelman, Tate, and Price, who I think will have a breakout season, but the likelihood of lost games to injury can't be overlooked and given the current cost of the unit they can afford to add a good one.

Thanks for your comments. I could see them bringing someone in for depth. I just don't think they need an elite receiver. Thanks again.

A lot of people pin the blame for the playoff loss to the Jets on well-worn phrase "unable to stretch the field", but I consider that analysis to be overly simplistic.

Would another deep threat help the Patriots be more successful? Sure, why not?

Do the Pats absolutely require another deep threat to be successful in 2011? No, I do not believe so.

It will be very interesting to see how this offense progresses and unfolds over the course of the season.

Elite? No. Do we need to bring in someone at least capable (in part as Deion Branch-missing-games insurance)? Maybe.

The answer is Chad Johnson aka Ochocinco. :)

    Bingo.

Besides, what do you call a guy who leads the league in receptions and yards after catch over the last four years, and who was voted in the top 50 players among his peers, if not elite?

If this team loses Branch or Welker we are dead at WR. DEAD.

The only depth we have is Edelman, tate and Price.

Not good. Edelman is a great slot guy. I dont know what Tate is and we have seen nothing from Price.
