White was a reach. As for Moore, I'm not down on him. I just don't see him contributing right away, which is something we arguably needed from a 5-tech situational pass rusher.

Reach? Huh, I'm kind of surprised. First off, IMO at the end of round 4 it's hard to call any player universally considered draftable a "reach." The talent gaps are pretty small by that point. Second, like most non-elite prospects White's projections varied, but the typical projection for him was rounds 4-6 so #130 was right around what I expected:

See, I expected him around round 6 or so, which is where the reach thing was coming from.

If you peep my draft contest post I had us taking Bridgewater so I was in agreement with that thread for obvious reasons. Those same reasons for selecting a QB early apply to Garoppolo as well. Only time will tell if Bridgwater or Garoppolo are legit in the league. But hard to criticize the pick when you were in favor of going QB as early as Bridgewater would've required. They are both sitting initially either way.

I wasn't a huge fan of Garoppolo. I was of Bridgewater's. That's where I would have went QB early.

I hate to make generalizations, because eventually the exception will come along, but the list of Wisconsin backs who looked great in at Wisky and were overmatched in the pros is as long as my arm. The list of Wisky RBs who lived up to their hype is still waiting it's first addition. Every year, Wisconsin puts together an Offensive Line that just mauls everyone they play and make prospects out of ordinary RBs. And I didn't think White was as good as most guys out of that program.

White is really the only pick of the draft I really didn't like.

I wish I could argue with any of that. I can't, yet I still like the way White catches and blocks.

I"m a Pats fan but not a homer. I've been critical of this team from the owner to the backup O-linemen. That said, I love this draft.

    Rounds 1 - 2

Easley - He recovered completely from his 1st ACL. His 2nd ACL will be 1 year recovered early in the regular season. I'm sure BB checked him out. Would have been a top 10 player if not for the history.

Garoppalo - All this talk about the "window closing" has been a load of crap. Brady was done ever since Pollard ran into his knee. Yes, he had put amazing numbers in recent seasons. OTOH so did Donovan McNabb. Brady can't throw deep, can't handle pressure like he used to, and can't improvise when he has to hold onto the ball for more than 2.5 seconds (dead last, by a wide margin in comp% the last 2 years). Moreover, Brady has sucked in all the Pats playoff exits since SB 42. It takes time to develop a QB. So, the longer you wait to draft a QB the more a transition will hurt. We know 2 things. One, that BB is high on Garoppalo, and that BB knows Brady is no longer a SB caliber QB. Why else would you take JG in the 2nd round? JG has at least 27 starts, >60% comp%, and I hope his Wonderlic was >26. It's the 26/27/60 Rule which correlates with NFL success. If the team cut Brady in 2014, the team would take an $18mil dead money hit. In 2015, the hit is only $5mil. This isn't an accident. Prediction: 2014 will be the last year for Brady in a Pats uniform.

    Rounds 4 - 7

Mel Kiper whiffed. This is what he had for his "top needs": TE, DL, S, RB. The Pats O-line was a train wreck. Brady took a beating in 2013. The culprits were Wendell, Connolly, and Mankins. Yes, Mankins. 2012 looks like a flash in the pan for Wendell. in 2013, he was the worst center in the NFL. I fail to see why the Pats were so enamored with Connolly to give him a multi-million dollar contract. They could save $3mil in cap space if they cut him now, I predict they will. The sad reality was that the team was loathe to run on the right side sans Gronk. Mankins was a reminder to never spend big money on guards. Speaking of overrated guards, I've never liked John Hannah. He was an overrated POS who played for the Pats when they were starving for recognition. He helped sabotage the 1977 season and publicly insulted Tony Eason after SB20 in what was a cowardly cheap shot. The current overrated guard, Mankins, was getting ready to holdout when the Pats caved and made him one of the highest paid guards in the NFL. This is a guy who SUCKED in both SBs vs the Giants. He's entering 2014 with consecutive mediocre seasons. The Pats could save $7mil in cap space if they cut him in 2015, another prediction.

It should be no surprise that they took Stork, Flemming and Halapio in the last day of the draft. I'll be disappointed if Stork doesn't start as a rookie at center. He can't be anywhere near as bad as Wendell. Flemming was a steal. He's a RT who can play RT, but is built like a guard. I'm hoping he starts at RG. Halapio only played RG at Florida. IMO, he's a longshot.

White is considered a reach by many. Hey, BB was moron for letting Woodhead go. Vereen is a bust. He makes highlight catches deep on the sideline, but drops passes over the middle. White isn't big or fast, but was productive at Wisconsin, a team player, and can catch (39 recs).

Moore, on paper, has all the physical tools to be a great 4-3 DE. OTOH, that's probably all he has. As a 6th rounder, that's good enough.

Thomas only problem is that he's small. He was safety in Tech. If that's the only reason he dropped, then he could be a surprise. Most likely a gunner on Teams.

Gallon could be a steal. He dropped because he's small. In his career, he's had single game receiving yards of 369, 184, 175, 145, 133, 115. You don't have games like that unless you have talent. Plus, he's an experienced punt returner. Good Punt Rets are hard to find. This is another steal.

Additional kudos to Belichick for passing on the TEs in this draft. I watched them at the combine and was underwhelmed. Good idea to sign 3 UDRFA TEs after the draft. Based on what's behind Gronk it wouldn't be a shock to see 2 of them on the 53. Hooman can't run block, is a mediocre pass blocker, and every pass thrown to him is an adventure. Other than that, his game is just fine.

Like I said, I love this draft. Could be Belichick's best.

Ayup. White's all right ~ a nice, versatile Reserve.

But there were about 8,627 Backs I liked in this Draft better'n'm.

I stopped reading at "Vereen is a bust", but I probably should have quit reading way before that. Though, I do agree Mankins had a pretty terrible year last season, really big ups and downs. With interior OL though it's so hard to figure out who is dropping the ball and making the other two have to pick up the slack. Does Mankins become elite again with a good C next to him?

I think one of the qualities the Pats value most at OL is toughness. Mankins played in the Super Bowl with a torn ACL. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find out that either Connolly or Wendell were playing through injuries last year. That's not to say they couldn't be upgraded upon just their drop off in play is pretty inexplicable. I'm sure Halapio playing through a torn pec last year was a plus in the eyes of the patriots.

A few opinions on the Pats draft. I believe trading down especially in the first round is a lot more difficult these days. I think if the Pats had a reasonable deal they would have traded down. I'm less than thrilled with the Pats draft but still hopeful. Not the impact draft I was looking for. Of course this is much easier now that we know all the picks and also my job is not on the line.

Round 1 - Can deal with Easley Pick. Alternative would have been Tuitt, Su'a Filo, Bitonio or Carlos Hyde.

Round 2 - Waiting for Mallett shoe to drop. Would have preferred Marcus Martin C - I still like Mallett.

Round 3 - Trade down. always work for me.

Round 4A - Ka'Deem Carey (No James White) Wisconsin RB's are iffy - I'm not even high on Montee Ball

    Round 4B - Telvin Smith LB/S FSU

Round 4C - AJ Mc Carron

I don't know enough about the rest of the draft to venture a guess.

One other note - from looking at youtube video, I did not think Khalil Mack warranted such a high selection. I did not think he was overly instinctive and would be very leery drafting him so high. Too many plays where he was stalemated or late off the ball. Time will tell.

If valuing toughness means the Patriots play guys who are injured and playing at 50% efficiency, I'm not sure that this ultimately benefits the team. OTOH, the Pats usually are near the top of the NFL in the number of players on injured reserve, so I guess they won't expect an amputee to start.

Well, nothing to do now except sit back and await the inevitable Tom Curran report that his sources indicate that there is interest in a Ryan Mallett / Andre Johnson swap. Thanks for a fun couple of months, see you in March.
