Please post your comments on this thread for before, during and after today's last day of the 2011 Patriots draft.

Today's draft starts at 12 noon Eastern and will continue until all picks have been made. The Patriots picks #138,159,192, and 219 unless something has changed since last night.

Here is a draft tracker that was very good about posting the picks shortly after they happened.

    NFL Draft - 2011 Draft Tracker - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Hope that you enjoy today draft as much as you enjoyed last nights draft.:D

I want one of Clint Boling, Terrance Toliver, or Sam Acho to last to our pick.

I was pulling for them to take Edmund Gates in the third but I think we hit our "troubled players" quota with Mallet. (still, maybe they could just hold group counseling sessions?)

I tend to think Gates won't slide much further - and should he slide all the way to 138 I'm not sure I still want him!

Still, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to Belichick trade up into the 4th if there's someone he wants.

There's also Ricky Elmore at OLB (some folks say he was the reason Reed looked so good) and Kris Dunham for size at WR.

Note to everybody commenting in this thread:

Although you may believe that you are providing a service by announcing what happens with a Pats' draft pick before it is announced on TV ...

    DON'T DO IT!!!

The others in these threads have made it abundantly clear that they would prefer to wait to see and hear for themselves.

In addition there is another thread for discussion on other picks: http://www.patsfans.com/new-england-patriots/messageboard/10/750181-offical-nfl-draft-thread.html
So if you want to say something like 'hey, look, the Cowboys took that ILB' that has nothing to do with the Pats, then go post it over there.

    thanks

Get the other mathews kid. Or someone, somebody better than TBC or Ninko. I don't hate those two, they just shouldn't be starting...

This draft ended for me at pick #33, I'm going golfing, unless something changes in Free Agency, say "hello" to the NY Jets, AFC East champs!

    Your starting offensive line:

Rookie LT (who was a TE 2 years ago), Mankins (after holding out for half the season), Koppen, Connelley, Vollomer.

Question, what happens if Mankins holds out, or Connelly/Mankins/Koppen get hurt? Wendell?

God thing they drafted Mallett, Brady might not make week five.

    Your starting front five:

TBC/Ninkovich (take your pick), Warren (if healthy), Wilfork, Dunno Deadrick/Pryor/Brace/??, Cunningham.

Name an O-line in football that can't block that front five?

Boy I see at least two QB "pressures" a game there.

The Pats needed to add one or two dynamic players to this team, instead, they have taken a huge step backwards, At BEST Solder-Light is a wash, after that No IMPROVEMENT WHATSOEVER!!! That's right, with a full one third of first 33 picks in this draft, the Pats came away with a replacement for their LT (we hope) and a 4th CB.

Toliver could be interesting, Boling is a useless fat tub of goo (and this is coming from a Georgia fan) you want no part of him.

I know it's a medical risk, but I would love to see them pick up Herzlich in the later rounds. At the very least he could be a dynamic STer for us and maybe even get into the defensive mix in time.

I guess BB is going to wait on the guys who lose their jobs to the new rookies to pick up his pass rush.

I agree with you. I don't think he'll be there when we pick unless we trade up. He also offers some flexibility being able to play ILB and OLB.

People who are complaining about not having a dominant OLB, have you lost all hope in Jermaine Cunningham? He now has a year under his belt and can become a good OLB. The opposite side would be a problem. Alternating between TBC, Ninko, and occasionally Fletcher is fine with me.

The pass rush will be perfectly fine this season. We did pretty damn good last season with little to no pass rush. If it was that bad, how could it get any worse?

It was one of the biggest reasons we lost to the Jets. You cant give any QB that much time to find his WR's. Cunningham has showed nothing sp far that should lead you to believe he can be an impact player. Its just wishful thinking he'll take over a OLB spot.

Front 7 Talent Still on the Board

I know a lot of people are disappointed that BB didn't take anyone to help the front 7. To us fans, it looked like they needed more talent last year and really struggled to stop the run in the playoffs. It's a young defense, however, so they will only get better, and Dowling should help the pass defense a lot more than many think.

That said, there is still talent in this draft who could help our pass rush. BB, however, does not seem to value pass-rushing players as much as the rest of the NFL, perhaps preferring to manufacture it with all his blitz packages. I don't agree with that idea, but here's a quick a look at a few guys who represent real value to any team and can still help the front 7 out.

    OLB:
    1. Greg Romeus - stud linebacker from Pitt with a lot of injury concerns. I liked him a lot before his senior year. In the 5th or 6th round, he's a tremendous value who can sit for a while and heal up before getting on the field as an OLB in the 3-4, or an edge rusher in sub-packages.

    2. Mark Herzlich - a ready-made 3-4 OLB who can cover and rush the passer. We've all heard the cancer stories. The guy is as tough as they come, played for BC, and is a team leader. Those qualities make him a real possibility for the Patriots today, and could help our defense as a backup right away. Herz could even supplant Ninkovich as a starter after some time.

    3. Sam Acho - I don't know why he dropped so far in the draft, but he's a pretty good rusher. May have other concerns that have scared teams away. I don't know a lot about him, except that he loosely fits the profile of an OLB and is an option to give us a speed rusher.

    4. Jeremy Beal - Seems like everyone forgot about this guy. He's still on the board and I still like him as a player. Pretty explosive rusher and a strong athlete who could learn how to cover quickly. Good motor. Only question is inexperience.

    5. D'Aundre Reed - Huge player who is very stout against the run. Doesn't offer a lot for the pass rush at this time, but his frame could turn him into a big McGinest-type power rusher. He could offer us solid depth against the run, which we really lack at OLB, and also present some potential to eventually turn into a power-rusher. Has a lot of upside and is a great fit for a gap-disciplined team like the pats. Solid candidate at the elephant position in the base 3-4.

These are my top 5, but there are actually a ton of players who "fit the mold" for OLB of about 6-3, 260 lbs who are still on the board. A lot of former 4-3 DE's. One of them might be a nice fit for the Pats.

There seems to be a lot less talent available for a 5-tech 3-4 DE. Christian Ballard and Pernell McPhee look like the top choices, and they'd need to add some weight to two-gap in BB's scheme.

I think the draft is still worth watching for those of us who'd like to see a few new defenders on the team.

Selections the Pats currently have, per NFL.com:

    Round 5, Pick 7 (138) (From Texans) --
    Round 5, Pick 28 (159) --
    Round 6, Pick 28 (193) --
    Round 7, Pick 16 (219) (From Raiders)

There's enough ammo to move up into the 4th if they want to.

Edit: Intended this to be its own thread, but I guess it's just more clutter about the pass rush to the mods. Still worth talking about and it makes the draft more interesting.

Re: Front 7 Talent Still on the Board

Chris Carter from Fresno State is still on the board too...

The issue, however, is going to be how many of these guys will still be around past the 4th round...

I really wouldn't be surprised if the Pats trade up into the fourth round if the run of picks warrants it and they feel the value is there. They have four picks left, so it's not out of the question.
