The morning after the worst beat down in recent memory i no longer feel i have to stess over every "what if" If we did this, or if we made that. Last night proved that this team (especially the pass rush) isn't good enough to realistically compeat for a SB. We'll make it into the playoffs but any thought of being able to beat an elite team was answered last night imo.

The pass rush can't generate enough pressure to dissrupt the opponents passing game, it leaves the DB's hanging.

The O-line problems can be fixed but you can't teach someone to pass rush if they don't have the ability in the first place.

While i think we could beat anyone in the AFC i just don't see us being able to beat N.O. or Minnesota.

Agreed, we're just not a very good defensive unit against anything resembling a "real" QB. We are also not very good on the road.

Have been thinking about the game last night, and i really felt after the game got really out of control, end of the 3rd quarter or so, could this just be a rebuild year for us? I mean Brady isn't going any where and I would like to think Belichick is staying for sometime. SO with that in mind, I hope we make it into the post season and knock off as many teams as possible!! Then who knows.

First time can ever remember that I went to bed before the game was over... they played like crap on both sides of the ball. The national pundits are going to have a field day with this one.. along with the resident nay sayers... D & C, Borges, Felger and all the other resident contrarians..

This is a good day to sync my ipod, finish raking leaves, make sure the snowblower is working.. do anything except listen to EEI... or 98.5... will not watch any sports today.. need an intervention.

Two thoughts I haven't seen elsewhere: 1) some players played like they had too much fun in the Bayou; 2) I would hate to be the Miami Dolphins this Sunday.

Couldnt agree more. I quickly changed off ESPN as the game came to a close. I had no desire to listen to them smile about how badly the pats got crushed and their really bad man crush on Manning and Bree's.

    Is it Sunday yet???

I completely agree with original post : Indy loss was way worst, because I had expectations. After a game like this, I too only expect a first round win and a loss on the road... therefore anything else would be gravy, like 06 (I mean moving on from SD and getting ahead early, not the comeback part).

I still think most NFL teams are beatable, but last night was not going to end well after the first INT.

I would much rather take a good old azz kicking than loseing by a couple of points and have things second guessed all week.

Not jumping off the bridge but I think three things are very clear this morning

1 - Our defense is new and we don't have a pass rush - good offenses are going to score 30+ points on this D this year

2 - To counter the above the offense has to hang with the opposition ( as did with the Colts). If TB or the O-Line has a bad day were done

3 - To improve the above we need a new OC as BoB is hopeless and we are getting found out

To be blunt NO and Indy are ahead of us right now and were in the second tier

I have been a Maroney basher for a long time but someone FINALLY taught him how to run. The thing is, with his speed and his new "technique" he could be a top back in the league.

    USE HIM MORE PLEASE! :)

I agree with you. Worst, most embarrassing ***** whooping that I remember this team taking in quite awhile. Here are my thoughts. Obviously, first and foremost the defense. This is the worst, most porous, poorly disciplined, poorly coached unit we have had in many years. BB should be ashamed of himself.......it all starts with him........Pees is an incompetent boob as a coord....still believe that....but as parcells says.....you can only make so many extravagant meals with limited groceries. That in a nutshell is our defense. BB has done a HORRIBLE job in drafting our secondary players, and bringing in FA talent. These guys looked like amateur/pop warner kids out there...lost like deer in the headlights. BB goes out and gets Bodden and Springs in offseason to sure up the secondary....Bodden has been pretty good overall.....springs is a bust....best years are well behind him ...and riddled with injuries. On the contrary, payton went out and got Mackenzie and "the other vet CB that escapes my mind right now".....who played LIGHTS OUT in their FIRST GAME as a 'Aint.
Adalius Thomas is a bust.......not the "beast" we all thought he would be.

Now the rest........Brady made one of the worst reads I think he has ever made. That throw on the run used to be his signature......instead he zoned in on the WR and Mackenzie picks him off.....and the momentum is GONE. Brady looked uneasy, nervous, and at times indifferent. One of the worst games in his career.....certainly has to be the lowest QB rating ever for him.

Maroney......was the only bright spot for the pats....this kid brought fire, guts, and heart to every run he made. As most of you know, I am not a huge Maroney fan.......but last night he brought it.

OL.....looked good early....then they got burned one time badly....and they scan down the OL and there's matt light......and it looked like Kaczur was in there too.....not sure if that was him.....rest of the night Brady got hurried and rushed...........and the running game suffered as well.

PK.....Gost is a great, great kicker.......WHY he could not kick it to the endzone in a DOME during the entire game is beyond me.....he will be good.....but never legendary like Vinny was and is probably not going to make the majority of clutch kicks. I would imagine BB knew that when he wouldn't let him kick in the SB....in a dome......

Coaching.......BB has been pathetic. He looks bewildered out there like Bobby Bowden right now. His decisions on having basically NO COORDINATORS has been an abysmal failure. We have done NOTHING since we had two seasoned, veteran offensive/defensive coordinators in there.....I think Kraft needs to sit down with BB on this one.......these makeshift coordinators are not getting it done. Again, because of poor drafting and FA signings of inadequate secondary players the coord can only do so much........but this is downright embarrassing.

Overall, we now all know what we are dealing with. A team that HOPEFULLY can win the division.....and THAT IS IT.......they will obviously go NOWHERE if they make the playoffs......this season is over except for the glimmer of hope in winning the division,.......which I am not holding my breath on either........

    This is the reality check

There's a lot of negativity surrounding the defense this morning, and I agree with all of it.

Wilhite is going to get hammered this morning, and justifiably so. But the entire secondary was awful last night. We needed our safeties to play well, but I didn't see much there apart from a potential INT from Meriweather in the first quarter when he collided with another Pat. Pass rush problems didn't help the situation. The Burgess trade was clearly not the answer.

But before the Indy game, I was talking football with a few friends. And I told them how surprised I was about how well this young D had been playing. I was expecting this year's D to be awful and inconsistent for most of the season, and hoping they could get it together in time for a play-off run. But they had exceeded all my expectations up to that point, and I said I'd try to remember that after the brutal November schedule.

So I am trying to remind myself about this now, trying to believe that we could win with that D. It feels really weird to try and defend this D when I expected such horrible things from them in the pre-season. It's obvious they're not ready. Can they get ready in 5 weeks? I don't know. Am I a homer for even thinking this? Probably. But even after last night's massacre, I'm not going to write off this defense...yet.

I dont see us beating San Diego right now either. There deep passing game would be too much for us.

No Pass rush and small CB's = Vincent Jackson and company beating us deep the entire game.

I think we could take the Colts in a rematch. Bengals. Denver. Pittsburgh. Baltimore. Jacksonville. Not a problem. But Chargers would present huge issues for our D.

and then from the NFC both New Orleans and Minnesota are bad match ups for us.

I knew we would have pass rush problems when Jason Taylor fell through and we came into the season with Rob NinkoVich and Pierre Woods seeing playing time. I lost even more hope for our defense when we traded Seymour. Ive actually been surprised our defense has looked this good up until this point. I thought our secondary improved alot and it has, but we will continue to get passed on without anything resembling a pass rush.

Yeah, kind of like the celebrating the night before the Giants SB.

Our team has been exposed and Denver, Indy and NO have receivers we can't defend.

It also seems we have some bad fits in D.

The Saints out coached us too....Sean Payton and Greg Williams were licking their chops.

Sad thread for an already sad season.

As Bill Walsh, one of the great offensive minds the sport ever saw always said, winning football games is about pass rush.

The Pats have none - really haven't since Mike Vrabel's game fell off a cliff in late 2007. Everyone bashes the secondary but no matter who is back there when you give a guy like Drew Brees or Peyton Manning all day they will burn anyone.

On the other side of the ball, all you have to look at was the first Brady pick. It is a quick slant, and gets picked because Brady was late with it. Why was it late? He had to dodge 3 pass rushers - ALL 3 that rushed on a quick pass. The Saints were rushing 3 and 4 almost exclusively and getting to the QB. That is an embarassing perfomrance from the offensive line. There are no plays in any playbook designed for that situation.

It was a telling sign that the first time the defence made contact with Drew Brees was in the 3rd quarter. Still, anytime the Pats lose it's disappointing, but I still think the AFC East is ours to lose and hopefully the D can get it's act together come January.

It's looking like the Bills beating Miami this past sunday was a big bonus for us. I would of hate to of gone into the game this sunday with the Dolphins having a chance to tie us...

The worrying thing about this team is that the only team that they've beaten this year who might make the playoffs is the Ravens (and they almost lost that one as well).

The way things are going, if this team makes the playoffs and is on the road I think they'll be one and done.
